This is a beautiful Bible. Thomas Nelson makes great products.

I like that way of placing cross references in a single-column Bible. Another very tempting NKJV to consider!

I agree, they're easier to find that way.

Same - I have one where the references are on the outside column but it pushes the text to the inside. I want to try this as it looks more efficient for space and note taking. And easier for reading.

Beautiful bible. I received mine today, thanks to your review, Tim. Very pleased because it gives me a bible to record study notes and cross references. If anyone's concerned about the ghosting and lack of line-matching, well, then, stop worrying about it! The paper is opaque as Tim said, and it's not an issue. AT ALL. Some of these other reviewers are calling it a "deal breaker" and I'm thinking, how spoiled we are! Line matching is a relatively new phenomenon, and this is a bible with good inking and good, opaque paper with no bleed-through to speak of. Other bible reviewers have GOT to stop obsessing over physical form factors - you know, lusting over leather and paper and concern themselves with content and practical matters. It's embarrasing! This is why I prefer Tim Frisch's presentation. He never goes overboard with how "supple the leather is" and other annoying, gushing excesses. He gives a good, fair review. So, again, I say, this is a great bible now that I have it in person. Thanks, Tim!

Another informed, intelligent and thorough review, which I've come to expect from you, sir. I'm helping my son find a good wide margine NKJV for note-taking and I think this is it. Good size with a perfect layout; textual notes separated from the cross references, both separated from the single-column text. Because it's a paste-down, he'll want this in leathersoft, with a view to an eventual rebind. My son says, if you're gonna kill an animal to cover a book, don't do pastedown unless you're putting a zipper on it. Tim Nickels advised me the use of book tape reinforcement on pastedowns, especially those with paper endsheets. That should keep our leathersoft Maclarens together while we save up for rebinds. Anyway, thanks again for the sage advice, Tim. Much as I love and appreciate your thorough Bible reviews, I love the rest of your virtual ministry even more. Looking forward to virtually hanging out with you in 2024, if the Lord tarries. If He doesn't, that'll be ok, too.

The two things that struck me about the layout was that the references were centered on every page with the line beside them. It has a very clean, organized look to it. Also, in comparing the font sizes of the 2 Bibles, I think maybe the one you were reviewing has better spacing between the lines which would aid readability. Thanks for a great review!

This is a great looking and highly functional edition for anybody, but especially teachers and preachers.

I really appreciate that you are so honest with what you think about the price point. I know Tim Wildsmith says never pay retail! But it's a gorgeous bible, and the purple one they have is beautiful.

I personally don't have any use for wide margins but I love the design of this NKJV Bible. It's nice to see that it has the full set of translator notes as well as cross-references and that they are actually separated. This design is so much easier to use to look things up. What I don't like is that in a red-letter edition the section headings are also printed red. I'd prefer this color scheme in a black-letter format. It's great that the full NKJV preface is included without trimming. That's rare these days. They forgot to include the Special Abbreviations page though and without that the footnotes can be quite cryptic sometimes. What's Bg., Kt., Qr., in the notes? Most people would need help with all that. When it comes to front matter, Thomas Nelson should just take what's in their large print Maclaren and reuse that content in every edition as standard. It's a pleasant surprise that this wide margin edition has a table of weights and measures. That's rare in Thomas Nelson Bibles. The lack of maps however is odd. I'd rather have those than a dictionary concordance. Overall, this is a very unique text block printed on good paper. The lack of line-matching a nonissue as long as they use paper with decent opacity. I also appreciate the smaller font size. Everything seems to be large print in the Bible publishing industry these days.

Great review, I ordered one, I have a large print journal the word but I wanted something a bit more neat in size for notes and doodles. Looking forward to it, thanks.

I just purchased this bible due to your review. I had been agonizing over other wide margins and their cumbersome width. This bible strikes an elegant compromise between size and readability.

Great review! Everything you have mentioned, I have agreed. The Nkjv Journal the Word Reference bible is what I used daily for 3 years and I love this layout which is the same as the single column. It’s a very practical Bible.

Font too small for these tired old eyes. I like the NKJV though. My Journal The Word is large print-ish, and I am enjoying it tremendously. I am at the age where I really need 11-12 point, which means I now own some hefty Bibles! :)

You are correct. The Open Bible is a great Bible, but I really don't think it's a 9 point font. I have a Cambridge Emerald with an 8 point font yet it's much easier to read than the Open Bible. Thanks for your video😎

Tim, I am waiting for the Legacy Standard Bible to come out with cross references, translation notes, goat skin cover, and in some form of a study Bible (with book introductions and minimal study notes). Do you have any idea when such a version of the LSB will be available??

Such a beautiful bible but even my super cheap hard cover NKJV compact that I got on sale for $10 is line matched seriously.
@candaceguinn1817

This bible is a reprint of the Journal the Word Reference Bible. The only difference is the white pages, wide margins, and the font size is better. The Journal the Word Reference Bible was made before line matching became a common practice. This is the same text block so that's why its not line matched.

It seems that many have taken to worshipping their Bibles. It is not unusual to see people comparing Bibles at church discussing fonts, spacing and ... odd. For you to suggest that a $129 is a "little steep" is a joke. "Real Leather" is not real or solid leather. It is glued up from leather dust and stained a color. That imitation product is worth about $6/square foot retail. A vinyl lining is "good?" When is that true. No thanks.
