NKP 765 Barking Through the Alleghenies-Chasing the Horseshoe Curve Special!

On May 25-27, 2013, the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society, in conjunction with Norfolk Southern, hosted public excursions from Lewistown, PA-Gallitzin, PA and return (a total of over 300 miles). On this trip, passengers would get to travel through the beautiful Allegheny Mountains, around the world famous Horseshoe Curve, and through the Gallitzin tunnels. As an early graduation present, my dad took me to go chase the Berkshire for all three days, considering I would much rather see the locomotive up close and document the trip trackside rather than ride it. This mighty 2-8-4 was built by Lima in 1944, and as seen in the video, is still going strong, reaching a top speed of 55 mph on these excursions. NKP 765 isn't just some giant hunk of metal, it's nicknamed "400 tons of Americana", simply for the fact that hundreds of people, whether they like trains or not, came out to witness a steam locomotive coming through their hometowns which only see black and white diesels all day long. It's a "living" and "breathing" symbol of our country's rich history, and helps us all see the past a little clearer while in the locomotive's presence. Watch as we chase the Westbound deadhead move toward Lewistown, and then begin the chase "The Horseshoe Curve Special" across the Middle Division and the East/West Slopes of the NS Pittsburgh Line for Memorial Day weekend 2013. This trip wouldn't have been possible without the efforts of Norfolk Southern, the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society, my dad, and my friend Roman, whose online railfan guide helped me plan my chasing route. Enjoy!

I was there on May 26th or so, around 28:15 off camera. My dad brought me down to see the 765 where she unloaded and then departed for servicing. I waved at the crew and they were able to whistle back at me I think and it was awesome! Best day ever!

When I was a child around kindergarten age, 1955 to 1957, I used to live in Cleveland near the Nickel Plate. Those were the days when the Berkshires roamed the midwest and we would always run to the nearby crossing to wave to the engineer when he blew the whistle.

Yeah, some of us are old enough to remember. Though most all steamers had been converted to fuel oil or diesel as the heat source they were "steamiest" none the less. Whistles are much better sounding then the horns of today. I live 50 yards of the A G & R track leading to the exchange yard with CSX and on to Pensacola

Excellent video. Ignore the nitpicking comments. For someone from the UK this is so different from our home railways. Diesel locos in the consist is usual here and in mainland Europe. It's a pity, but better that than no mainline steam!

To Stuart Fox; In the old days when I was a kid the CNR passenger cars all had a generator v-belted to a live axle and a battery box with some big batteries, That would be very expensive to equip to day. The steam locomotives dynamo could not supply the cars. Thus the diesel back-up. The diesels also supply braking power. Plus no railway is going to allow an old locomotive to jam up their mainline in the event of a breakdown. If having the diesels connected in order to get on the tracks, then I'm okay with that...Hal

In October 2013, the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society conducted an excursion round trip from Fort Wayne to Lafayette Indiana with NKP 765. It followed the old route of the Wabash Cannonball, now a busy Norfolk Southern road. There was no diesel helper - a tribute to the confidence that NS had for the restoration, maintenance, and operation of the locomotive.

Jared, if they come to Allentown next year that would be awesome! I live near Allentown. They went through Allentown before in July 1988 with trips from Bound Brook, NJ to Reading, PA and return. The track was Conrail at the time, now it's NS. I missed those trips but rode this excursion behind 765 in PA last year. Where did you hear that about Allentown or Philadelphia next year? That's what I heard, too. I wonder where they'll board? Nearby we have the Reading and Northern which has the 425 and 2102, 2102 last operated Oct 1991 and they once operated mainline excursions like this in the 1980's, but they used open window coaches unlike NS now. Now Reading and Northern runs excursions on their own track only but they have many miles. They run trips every year but these new NS excursions are unpredictable when and where they will run. They took the fall off due to crew shortage but will resume excursions next spring. I look forward to next year when 4501 and possibly 611 hits NS next year. We can't really go on far trips in the car due to my mom's health, breathing, so we can't really go to an excursion in NC or TN, maybe northern VA or MD with 4501 or 611, or eastern PA with 765 if it happens.

After reading the comments, all of my questions were answered but one, or maybe it was and I just missed it. But anyway, it sounds like one of the observation cars has a gas engine on it. At first, I thought I was hearing something else, but I wasn't. Is that for a generator? And if it is, does it power more than one car, since it seems to be the only one that has it?

@@jamesharrison6201 I can understand the need for one, but not two. As far as I know of, ES44ACs aren't equipped with HEP for passenger service. When NS had steam excursions in the 90s, their was a converted baggage car with a diesel generator inside that provided the HEP.

@ferky123
@ferky123 7 лет назад
John Moore it's steam coming out of the smokestack. The reason is that's where the cylinders exhaust as it provides more draft for the firebox. The fire has to travel from the very back of the boiler to the very front through tubes in the boiler and any help it can get is appreciated. Also the steam that's "bleeding" out of the engine is being used to run a mini turbine for the train lights and compressor for the air.

@Island_Line_Rail_Productions

Stuart Fox the steam locomotives do not have dynamic braking so the diesels are there to provide that as well as in case NKP 765 were to break down...NS is a very busy class 1 RR and has lots of train traffic, so if this steam excursion were to block the main it could have very bad problems for any freight traffic.....

@1962Anderson

Diesel assist is used in mountainous terrain, more for dynamic braking than anything else, but a backup in case of a mechanical breakdown. However, when 765 runs in most of Ohio, and certainly when she runs between Ft Wayne (where she lives--New Haven IN actually) to Lafayette (where I live), it's mostly gently rolling country, so no diesel loco's are added to the consist
@1962Anderson
@1962Anderson 8 лет назад
+Art Anderson In late August 2012, after having been towed cold to St Louis due to our dangerous drought conditions that summer, 765 made her return trip to Ft Wayne, pulling a pretty long string of loaded centerflow hoppers full of soybeans east. She did that run all by her lonesome, no diesels needed to apply.
@timgreen4137
@timgreen4137 6 лет назад
Stuart Fox The diesels are mainly used to provide electricity for the passenger coaches. Steam locomotives have dynamic braking . The engineer uses the reverser valve, and applies steam. Some rail lines require the diesels as backup, in case the steam locomotives breaks down. They need to keep the main line tracks open for regular traffic.

@manga12
@manga12 10 лет назад
Samuel Aufmuth well actually the electrical is contained in the passanger cars themselves I was told at the openhouse last year at the home of the 765, the main one issue I brought up was the horseshoe runs was why she had soo many diesles helping, they said she could not pull the run herself, it would have taken too long, and horseshoe is on an upward grade, also on the new river runs they had her hold the record for amount of cars in its heyday, but they had more cars then what her breakes were designed for in passenger cars, with those you have to be gentler on the throttle and they are just a differant beast then running highspeed freight like she used to do, you cant jar people around, and the breakes on an old loco takes more wear and tare then a diesle that can use dynamic breaking also one of the reasons they have them, I would love to see more steam excursions myself especialy out of fort wayne but they just dont do them often last year the cannonball route sold out in 2 hours, i wanted to go on it soo bad, this year they have not mentioned anything about it yet, if they do one at all, its a surprise at all with the timetables the modern rail roades run that they let passenger runs though there at all, I cant count how many trains go though town and the backroad here each day, and it seems to be getting more and more the last few months, and with a neighbor just starting on as a csx conductor he said they just ordered many new engines to make up for the expected increase in new freight hauling, though I still begrudge that csx wont let any steam on their lines at all and throw a fit whenever they try to run a train over their rails the story goes, and that is one of the reasons that the new river runs no longer have a steamer on the front, though I think 1218 if restored or 611 would do a fine job if they ever change their mind as well as 765. I would love to see them restore one of the alleganies and or one of the big blow turbines myself for excursion service, they are putting a bigboy back to running order afterall, and planning to build a prr T1 from scratch though that could take 30 years at the rate they are going if it ever gets done. but the last 2 years has been a good time in the news of steam locos and their restorations.

manga12 Technically, with a slightly shorter consist, 765 is perfectly capable of taking on HSC by herself. On the 2012 Employee Specials, the crew cut the power from the EMD unit and took the grade on 765's power alone. Hardest they worked her since the rebuild and they had her down to about 5 mph. She basically repeated the feat NPK 759 had done in 1970 under Ross Rowland, minus the bets that were placed. 759 was funnier imo, becuause it was like she was taunting 1361 for just sitting there. And the New River...CSX should recall the time when 614 was the only power available in that one winter in the 80s because it was so cold the fuel oil gelled up. 100 car loaded coal trains solo at 55? No problem. Also looking forward to NS brining 611 to Altoona at some point. The Js were tested on PRR rails, and the likelihood of me seeing 611 come here is probably higher than...well, you know. I still wanna smack someone for using 'shop space' as an excuse when the boiler is apparently just short of a Form 4.
@manga12
@manga12 10 лет назад
Timothy Pavlic II oh I am sure they both will storm the hills again, 611 is in N&S territory, just a matter of time, and fitting it in, 611 should be ready I hear by years end and running next excursion season if not sooner. as for the part well you know, I am not quite sure how to take that are you talking about the 765 not being as likely to be back before 611 or are you saying before a certain warm place ices over, or are you saying in referance to csx letting steam back on its lines? or something else entirely just so I have a clear referance you are saying, and as for the power of steam, they have larger weight and run better then diesels at mainline speed, and do so well because that is how they were set up to run most efficently as well as the larger driver wheels which effect the power better I would say just like larger gearing to smaller gears, size makes a differance often, and as for the 80's I dont know the story please tell me, though I know on the UP they will sometimes have the steamers carry freight if its on the way to the the place they are going and have done some for show and photo ops in years past, though the challenger class is down for its boilerwork and is third priority to 4014 and so forth they said at the video of the tour of the up steamshop in chyanne, when asked about it. but 765 herself pulled 100 car trains alone no help in her running days on the Nickle Plate, though I was told they only had half the capacity back then, that is still a lot of weight 50 modern day rail cars alone is a fair size train, stopping it though would be a bit on her old brakes but she could start and pull I am sure, and as for dynamic brakes I was told back then they would use the locomotive brakes to help and then the second set of brakes to the train lol, as for steam there are some advantages it has over ac power units, for raw power and running at speed, as well as they tell me cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter I was told by Mr Bill Byers at the shop in New Haven Indiana where they keep the NPK 765.

It's really too bad the engine is just going through the motions not really doing much by being pushed by the two diesel electrics. These steam loco's have a different sound when they are under load.

Nope American steam locomotives for the win. We made the most beautiful and powerful steam locomotives.

***** NKP 765 is prettier and much better sounding. SP 4449 takes things much higher, The Br 50 and Br 52 look cobbled together.

How unfortunate not to video from the SUNNY side of the train. How unfortunate NOT TO FOLLOW the STEAM locomotive as it passes by. How unfortunate never to show the train entering a grade crossing. 15:10 Nice! But then the video is truncated. Grade C-

haha, didn't know this hobby was a test. hard to take criticism from someone who has no videos of their own...circumstances don't always allow for your Godly standards to be accomplished...please comment again later and try again for someone who cares

Jared Steele Perhaps you will learn a little. Funny that I am able to step across the track and video from the sunny side. Yes, I follow the locomotive and show it approaching and going away. Notice that most of your video is passenger cars rolling by? Boring. (Or is this really a video of passenger cars?)

Robert Gift Sir. Perhaps you didn't know that you aren't paying for this. I do agree that you should give out tips but don't criticize this guy. He is just doing this for fun. Mr, Steele is very good at video and like I said, it's important to give tips for better video, but you don't have to be mean about it.

Cullen Tabaczynski says:"you videos are great" Yes - if this is a video about passenger cars. Pointing out improvements is "hate"? Laughable.
