The Milton Model is like an inverse of the Meta Model that we saw in an earlier video. Its purpose is to open up the mind to alternative possibilities. And the main way it does this is by being artfully vague!
Watching this video is worth 2 Management Courses CPD Points*.

LESSON NOTES
The founders of NLP, Richard Bandler and John Grinder, observed and modeled the language patterns of successful psychiatrist and therapist, Milton Erickson. Erickson had a naturally hypnotic way of speaking with his patients. He used vague language and seized on whatever was happening in the room, to help his patients to make changes.
At the heart of the Milton Model for language is the idea of embedding presuppositions into everything you say, so that the patient will start to believe the change has happened.
I do not intend to try and teach you Ericksonian hypnosis, nor even how to use the Milton Model. I simply want to give you a sense of the kinds of language patterns that practitioners use.
Let’s go through the example in the video…
‘I know that you are wondering what the Milton Model is.
A mind read - claiming to know what you are thinking, gently encouraging you to think it.
'And it’s a good thing to be wondering'
Who says? This states something as if it’s obviously true. Called a Lost performative.
'Because that means you are learning many things. '
Cause and effect - which is unproven, but you may well adopt this belief
And then I presuppose that you are learning many things, so again, it gently nudges you to believe it too.
'Aren’t you?'
A simple tag question gives you choice. It makes you feel in control and therefore reduces resistance.
'And all the things that you can learn will give you new insights and a new understanding.'
'All the things' is a massive generalization that creates the feeling of something big.
The words ‘insight’ and ‘understanding’ turn a process into a thing. It feels like you just get them, without having to actively do anything. It’s easy.
'And that means that your unconscious mind is processing this information and understanding it, even if you do not consciously think you understand it.’
A double bind. This is a statement where I win, whichever of two competing options is true.
• You either consciously understand what I said - great!
• Or you didn’t, so instead, your unconscious mind understood it. Great!

In NLP, one way to start to change people's attitudes and approaches is to make subtle suggestions to their unconscious mind. It's a lightweight, conversational form of hypnotic suggestion. And the method we use is called the Milton Model, after psychoanalyst Milton Erickson.

I really got confused. Artfully vague? How is that possible? More I listen to this video, more I got confused. I denied the things you said from 2:24, in my mind. Am I unconsciously avoiding understanding or just hesitating to learn?

My understanding of 'artfully vague' is that it refers to deliberately using language in an imprecise way, so that what you say is ambiguous. Often it makes use of homophones - two words that sound the same but mean different things. If you listen to Ericksonian language with an analytical mindset, you can understand what it is doing (though it can be hard to catch every twist) but it will have no impact on you. It works best when the listener is unaware of the ambiguities and has their mental defenses down. Remember: Erickson used it in a clinical setting. NLP founders extracted it from there, codified what Erickson was doing, and taught it to people with no therapeutic training. Next time a salesperson signs off a call, or hails you as you leave the shop with the words 'Bye now!', consider that they could be trying to place an embedded instruction into your subconscious, to buy now.

@@ManagementCourses Thank you so much sir for your explanation. Now it does make sense a lot. I didn’t expect to get the answer so quickly. Once again, thank you for taking the time to answer my question.

@@kats1978 You're welcome. I try to answer every (well-meaning) comment, because people who are serious about their learning (like you) are the people I created this channel for. It's not a fully commercial venture (the money I make does not reflect the time I put into it). Rather, it's a way to give back!
