LESSON NOTES
NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
- Neuro refers to the mind and our neurological systems that process information
- Linguistic refers to the way we primarily process information through language
- Programming refers to how we can establish, break, and re-create mental procedures for the things we do - consciously and unconsciously
We could define NLP as creating patterns of behavior using the language of our nervous system.
Other definitions
John Grinder: ‘The study of human excellence’
Richard Bandler: ‘An attitude and a methodology that leaves a trail of techniques.’
Tony Robbins: ‘The science of programming your brain to achieve the objectives you want in life.’
The question that much of NLP seeks to answer is ‘How can you re-program people’s patterns, to create excellent behavior?’
The Core Principles of NLP
1. Know what outcomes you want
2. Use your sense with precision (sensory acuity)
3. Build rapport with yourself and the people around you
4. Cultivate behavioral flexibility
Some of the Techniques that Make up NLP
• Analyzing spoken language
• Using hypnotic language to effect change
• Rapport building
• Changing mental and emotional states
• The Milton Model
• The Meta Model
• Internal representations, Representation Systems, and sub-modalities
• Reframing
• Logical levels
• Eye accessing cues
• Anchoring
• Visual squash and Swish
• Timeline therapy
The Reputation & Ethics of NLP
In the 1980s and 1990s, it became fashionable to train sales executives in NLP, so they could get results from its persuasion techniques.
If some of the techniques of NLP work, there is an obligation to use them ethically.
A lot of NLP techniques are designed as therapeutic interventions. Many were modeled on skilled therapists like Milton Erickson, Virginia Satir, and Fritz Perls. Yet they are often taught to people with no basic therapeutic or psychological training.
There is a question about validity. Few psychological findings are backed by the gold standard for research of:
• Large and diverse data sets
• Numerous repetitions of the experiments
NLP is at the far end of the spectrum - often with little more than observation and model building by enthusiasts. Some components of the huge body of ideas are sound and work in some situations. But there is a lot of NLP that has little or no experimental backing and is likely to have little efficacy in the hands of a highly trained practitioner - let alone someone with less skill and experience.

I'm sorry. My pacing is deliberate to allow time for people who don't have good English to follow. But I don't want you to be angry. Simply stop watching and do something that makes you happy instead.
