NMJL 2022 Card Analysis and Tips for a Smooth Transition

The National Mah Jongg League publishes their annual card of valid hands for American mah jongg players in April. The rules of the game rarely change. The methods used to describe the hands (i.e. , colors, letters, numbers, format) stay the same. The categories of hands have been the same for many years. The changes are in the shapes and patterns of the hands. Here are statistics and findings that may give you an insight into the nuances of this year’s card. I will also share some tips for a smooth transition.

Robin - 1st 2022 hand: Does the 2022 have to be dots because it's blue? It says any suit, but I was called when my 2022 was crak since it called for red and green dragon.

When there is a block of year tiles that requires a zero, the White Dragon is no longer a Dragon so the number tiles can be whatever suit you want.

We had a situation playing mahjong this week. I took a picture of it. I will send you an email expla'ining what happened. We weren't sure if what the player did was ok or not. I love listening and learning from your video's. I do have a question though. When discarding tiles, can you put them down in a line rather than scattered? This makes it easier to see which tiles have been discarded.

The standard practice in American mah jongg is randomly placed discards so I highly recommend it. This way you can train yourself to survey the table for the tiles you’re looking for.

what is a multiple?

A multiple is a block of two or more identical tiles (i.e., pair, pung, kong). American mah jongg is a game of multiples so I believe building around multiples is the strongest strategy. If there are no multiples in my dealt hand, I build around the predominant pattern (i.e., evens, odds, consecutive run [4-number range]). I proceed through the Charleston until I have a multiple then I reassess and build around the multiple. Once I identify either the multiples or the predominant pattern, I pick the category (sometimes more than one) and gather tiles for that category and stay at that level for as long as possible. When I run out of discards, I either whittle down my categories or pick a hand within a single category to free up discards. Staying at the category level and not picking a hand until you run out of discards provides great flexibility.
