In July 2017, I knocked on the door of a home in the middle-of-nowhere Montana. Just off the freeway snaking through the green valleys and snow-peaked mountains, I stopped to see who lived in this small house along a nearby river. Who called this place home?
Turned out it was a family of Mennonites.
Two girls in long, peach-colored dresses and matching bonnets answered the door. Soon mom came with baby in arm. Katie the mother welcomed me inside, talked a bit about their life in western Montana, and gave me her husband's card. Perhaps I could get a proper interview of their life on my way back through.
A couple of weeks later, that's precisely what happened.
This time, Katie and Jethro and kids were joined by another Mennonite family. Together we had dinner, they sang hymns, and then the two couples answers all of my questions about their way of life and outlook on the world.
I left with hours of footage and several photos. This volume of material, as well as this interview happening at the end of my trip last summer through the Pacific Northwest, are reasons why this video has taken me a year to complete. But good things do take time.
I think you'll enjoy Jethro, Katie, Titus, Gladys, and all their kids opening up about their life--their actions, their beliefs, and the reasons for them.
