I have placemats that have already been trimmed to size. Do you have a suggestion for adding the edge/binding. I'm a newbie. I wish I'd have seen your tutorial first, it's great.
There are another few good channels that can help you with binding. Jordan fabrics is one channel and shabby fabrics also a channel called The crafty Gemini
Yes, I agree. It is a waste of my time to have to watch the cutting of multiple strips or sewing and cutting dozens of half square triangles. Show me one time. If I don't get it I can rewind/go back until I get understand. This lady is just great in all her videos.
Hi April. I purchased it a few years ago from an on-line fabric store. Go to etsy.com and enter "coffee cup panel fabric". They might have it or you might find something you like better. Thanks for watching💗and happy sewing😍
Wow, I thought the wavy quilted lines were a fancy quilt design - love it! I've made a few pot holders using your no binding easy tutorial and will definitely have to make more with this technique! Thanks for the great instructions as always!
I'm returning to sewing after a few decades of not sewing much at all. Thank you so much for your step-by-step instructions. So easy to follow and learn.
Love how you explain every detail . Very good at teaching how to sew .. makes it more simple for me . Reading instructions don't really do it for me !!
Those look great! Back in the 80s, i used to bind my quilts the same way. I got fussed out by some quilters for taking this short cut, but my quilts were for the beds, not for museum pieces! Works great for placemats too. Nice video! Thanks.
Love all your videos. Getting ready to make my first pot holder. This. Is Ann from Cincinnati. My fabric is quilted already. One side has flowers and butter floors on the other other side.not floor suppose to be flies.
@@TheSewingRoomChannel hi still working on my quilt. I just can't figure out what to do with all the 5 inch square s I got. lay them across the sheet or run them from corner to corner and even thought about putting them in so many rows one way and then change direction
This looks great! :) Has anyone tried this with cord or jean materials? Just wondering how that would work with jean or cord as the front and then cotton as the back. thanks!
Fantastic, you are all about the details, wonderful, thank you. I love this idea! I will never put binding on a pot holder again. I am saving this video. Thank you Cheryl !!!!!!
Thanks for this. Looks easy--my preferred method :-). One comment though. When you mention fabric for the top and bottom you don't specify cotton. If people aren't aware they may use fabrics that contain things like polyester and will have pot holders that melt when used on hot pans. I bought some pot holders at the Dollar Store not realizing they used polyester and it was quite a mess.
Very nicely explained ! Love quick and easy :) That coffee cup panel gave me a little case of fabric envy. I've not felt like sewing lately...but this might be just the thing to get back to it. Thanks for the gentle push.
Well done! You have a wonderful voice and way for teaching. I've been sewing for about 60 years. We didn't have computer videos and instructions way back then and you and your seam ripper became best friends. LOL
Hi NG B. Then you remember cutting dress patterns out of the newspaper, Simplicity and McCalls patterns were way under a dollar, and the only type of decorative stitch on the sewing machine was a straight stitch - LOL. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing.
@@TheSewingRoomChannel Oh, yes ... I remember well. My mother taught me to sew and if I had a date and wanted a new outfit, she'd tell me to go make one. I could knockout a pant suit or shift and jacket that afternoon and wear it that evening.
Hi Cheryl, I have done this with placemats, but it never dawned on me to do it with pot holders plus fabric panels. Thank you for showing this. Yes, lots of great gifting. Love your fabrics. Nice job. Thank you again. Kathleen
WHAT A G R E A T TECHNIQE !!!! EVERY TIME WHEN I SEW A POT HOLDER, I HATE THE MOMENT IN WHICH I HAVE TO BIND IT WITH BIAS TAPE AND I'M STRUGGLING WITH THE CORNERS. NOW YOU GAVE ME THE PERFECT SOLLUTION. IT MAKES IT SO EASY TO SEW POT HOLDER. WOW, I AM SO GLAD!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH
Hi Ora. Here is a link to another pot tutorial that you might find helpful also. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7OwZSz6ilGY.html Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍
Love your tutorial videos. Thank you so much for sharing.!! I hate binding, I always make such a mess of it and this was perfect. And thank you for the topstitch ideas. I'm just over being a newbie and loved the panel ideas for pot holders too!!
What you’re calling “top stitching” is actually called quilting. It was very confusing to me trying to figure out what you were wanting topstitched. Good tutorial though. Very useful. Thanks!
Hi Amethyst. Great question. I try to use both terms because a beginner may not be aware that the term "quilting" means to stitch on top to hold all the layers of fabric together. Happy sewing.
Thanks for the easy tutorial. I made a large hot pad for the table to put hot dishes on a long time ago but I forgot exactly how to do it. I found this video just in time. My hubby asked me this morning when I was going to make new pot holders.. Great timing. Haha.
I had the same question so I looked it up. They said you really should use 2 layers of cotton batting and one of the Insulbrite. Though it's not absolutely necessary. I plan on sandwiching mine between the two cotton battings. Hope that helps you.
I need to make myself some pot holders....my Mum’s old and loved pot holders have about had it.... I am 77 yrs. old HA! I hate to do binding, I love your idea!
Hi Denise. Sorry, I don't have a website for you to download any instructions. Many people watch the video from their cell phone or ipad - put the device on pause and sew a step. Thanks for watching. Happy sewing.
This is how my Grandmother taught me to finish a quilt. Great to see done again. Especially since I'm getting ready to make my first quilt in about 20 yrs.
Thanks for the great potholder. I was looking at seam binding to buy. Now I don't need to do that. I am old and just want to do small projects and have too many scraps laying around. Enjoyed your video very much, thanks again.
Hi Frances. Glad the no binding pot holder tutorial was helpful. Here is a link to one of my many pot holder tutorials: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7OwZSz6ilGY.html Thanks for watching💗and happy sewing. 😍
Wonderfully easy and excellent explanations. I am a visual learner so for myself it’s best to watch someone do the steps while explaining. Well you are so articulate and pleasant to listen to that your style of tutorial works great for me! Thank you for a fun project. Great idea with panel fabric!
Thank you for making a video for us! I found a product called 'Insul-Bright'. It is a smart insulation. The polyester fibers resist conduction while the reflective metallized film resists radiant energy. the energy, hot or cold, is reflected back to its source. Fiberfill or batting will do, but I really liked this product for pot holders and oven mitts.
Hi- I'm 70 & just took the machine out of the box last week...figured out how to thread it (I love youtube) & ran into your vid for the easy placemat. I was excited for this to be a great beginner & sort of practice project & took my little measurement note with me to Joann's & bought what I needed (Haven't taken a deep enough breath to start yet....ack!) & this morning saw this one. These are great, thank you. I'm going to go check out your channel...I 'liked' & sub'd :D
Hi Kathy. I'm excited to hear you have bought a sewing machine. Make sure you read the users manual so that you completely understand your machine. Starting with this small project is perfect for some one you is a beginner. Good luck and happy sewing.
Hello! I’m new to sewing and enjoyed your video. I’m thinking about making some holiday pot holders for myself. This method is definitely going to make it easier. I do have one question though, with this method how do you attach the hanger? Please let’s me know I recently purchased some Halloween fabric and can’t wait to make a pot holder! Thank you again!
Hi Cynthia. Cut a piece of fabric about 2" wide and about 6" long. Fold the lengthwise raw edges into the center and press. Then bring the folded edges together and press, and then stitch the folded edges together. Bring the ends together and place in the corner on the back side of the pot holder, and then stitch down. Happy sewing.
A lady after my own heart :-) Often I use cut off denim pant legs as the re-purpose too, especially. LESS WORK is sewing with a shorter and easier post-present project cleanup, if you choose not to bake.
You make this look so easy for a beginner like me! I'm going to make lots of these for my daughter and niece who just moved out on their own. Thanks for sharing!
Sherrill, I need a little advice: decades ago when I sewed, it was mostly polyester 😂. Now, I have bought some Kona cotton for a simple dress. Should I pre-wash, dry, iron before using? I don’t want it to fray!! Manufacturer suggests “soaking” for 5-6 hrs, then drying. What are your thoughts please?
Hi Paula. Before cutting into the fabric you should wash the fabric per manufacturers directions. But before soaking/washing do a zigzag stitch on the 2 raw edges. This will prevent it from fraying during cleaning it. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching💗 and happy sewing😍
Hello! I am pretty new to sewing (late 2019). So I am still learning. Could I possibly use one layer of pre-quilted fabric (like from Joanne Fabrics) and one layer of Insul-Bright for the 8 inch center pieces and one 100% Cotton fabric piece for the 10 inch piece back piece? Thank you.
When watching the video on "no binding pot holder i saw a sewing machine cover in the back ground. Do you have a tutoriol & or pattern for that. Could you also explain how to make it bigger size than the pattern size.
Hi Debbie. Hi there i am back i have made some pin cushions and some napkis and a drawstring bag which i have never made before thanks to you with your easy sewing skills i have been able to do these sewing projects i would like to make some easy christman gifts any ideas? you are so easy to understand and explain sewing projects very well. Thank you for helping me to sew i am really enjoying doing different projects also any flat quarter ideas. Cheers Bronwyn Field. NSW AUSTRALIA.
I I really like the idea of this technique. I'm used to making pot holders with a batting layer on each side next to the outer pieces. does just using the insulbrite keep your fingers from burning?
Hi Becky. Yes it can. Here is another tutorial on 3 way to finish off the edges: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6dTUIBLqxhQ.html Thanks for watching💗 and happy sewing😍
Hi Sheryl Thank you for all idea on sewing pot holders. l just getting back to sewing. l will be a little rusty because l not sewed since my girls were little. where can you the pre printed pot holders that you showed Thanks Maria
Hi Maria. Go to etsy.com and look up "panel fabric". They have all types. Hope you find what you are looking for. Thanks for watching💗 and happy sewing😍
Thank you for your tutorial on potholders without bindings. It is sooo much easier and faster than with the binding. I’m doing some for Christmas gifts as we speak.🎅🏾🎅🏾
I have enjoyed doing the no binding pot holder, I am having a problem when I do the quilting my backing seems to get short and then I want to give up. What am I doing wrong
Hi Blondie. Here is another tutorial that explains this pot holder in a using a different method: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6dTUIBLqxhQ.html Thanks for watching
Place pins to hold the fabric layers together and then do several lines of quilting stitches. The stitches will come out better if you use a walking foot. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍
I love this tutorial and I'm about to make some of these pot holders/Hot pads. Question - is it possible to make the back piece of fabric larger so that the "binding" edges are abit wider? Would it throw the overall appearance off - ie out of proportion? What would be the measurements of the back piece of fabric, in order to do this?
Hi Colleen. Here is a link to a very easy and quick 10 minute pot holder: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IpiXpTIRQhA.html In this tutorial you can cut the back fabric any size. Hope this helps. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IpiXpTIRQhA.html
I love this idea and your instructions are very clear, but i have a question. Does this leave a raw edge or am I missing something when you folded the fabric from back to front?
Hi Sue. The fabric on the back of the pot holder is larger than the fabric on the top. The extra back fabric covers the raw edge as you fold it over to the front. Hope this helps. Glad you like the no binding pot holder tutorial. Thanks for watching💗and happy sewing😍
How do you deal with the raw edges on the larger piece of fabric? I did not see a step where you turned under that raw edge which will be exposed when you told it over the front piece of fabric. AM I missing something? Liz M.
Hi Richard. Go to 6:55. The raw edge is fold over twice. First 1/4", and then fold again over to the front of the pot holder. Here is a link to another pot holder tutorial. In this video that step is easier to see. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IpiXpTIRQhA.html Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍
Nice, thank you! That definitely makes it easy peasy =) I subscribed as I LOVE to watch sewing channels and I also love to sew. Thanks for the great video.
Thank you so much for watching. Check out my Easy Pot Holders playlist. I have a few different pot holder tutorials that will show you how to put the hanging loop on the pot holder. I will link the playlist and a Hanging Pot Holder tutorial for you below. 😀 Easy Pot Holders Playlist - ru-vid.com/group/PLk1NiZvKG3bfte-uKC7TwBxThkwVePlaQ Hanging Pot Holder - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-a6a5yXNjSQA.html
I absolutely love your tutorials! So easy to follow, great detail. I especially like how you have a sample ready for every step. I have made so many things from your channel.
Hi Topanga. You can use one layer of cotton batting, and one layer of Insul-Bright. You can purchase it at Joann Fabrics and Crafts, etsy.com, and amazon.com. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍
Hi Annie. Most computerized sewing machines have this wavy line. It is called serpentine Look in your user's manual. If you have it, you might have to adjust the width and length to get it large enough like I have it. Merry Christmas. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍
this looks great. I'm a beginner. I appreciate the u tubes, but I live where I don't get a very good internet connection . Are there written instructions available?
the backside looks unfinished because the quilting stitches dead end at the edge of the binding. I'll stick with regular binding so everything is enclosed and no loose threads sticking out of the quilt stitches
Hi Stella. You can also do the stitches out to the raw edge. Then the thread ends are covered when the fabric is folded over to the front. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍
Hi Trini. If you use a standard presser foot, your fabric will stretch and move. I recommend that you use a "walking" presser foot. This helps multiple layers of fabric to move evenly under the presser foot. The will not stretch out of place. Here is a link to my tutorial on how to use the walking foot and how to do basic quilting stitch patterns. I hope this will help you. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jEuvmUS-078.html Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍
Hi Carolina. Glad the pot holder tutorial was helpful. Here is another pot holder tutorial you might also find helpful: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6dTUIBLqxhQ.html Thanks for watching💗 and happy sewing😍
Hi Jenna. At this time, I do not have a tutorial on a no binding rounded corner pot holder. Thanks for the suggestion. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍
So glad I stopped by. These no binding potholders sound so good. I have always had trouble with the binding. I need to make some more soon. This is great. Thank you for saving me hours of work!!!
Boy this took watching each step very carefullyBUT boy is is easier than any tutorial I’ve ever watched for this technique. I love your RU-vid channel. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and lessons learned. Keep it up.
