It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive RU-vid experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong...
This time we examine a 1990 Rover 216 (R8) GSi Automatic, similar to one of the first cars ever ever featured on No Budget Reviews. Of course, we get excited about a beige leather interior, a Honda D-Series engine, the famous tea shelf and very little of any importance at all.... Nothing untoward, then!
No Budget Reviews: 1991 Rover 216 SLi Automatic - • No Budget Reviews: 199...

These were the best cars of its class when they were launched in autumn 1989. 5 out of 5 blob score from What Car? magazine. Rover Group & Roy Axe got this car spot on. A perfect successor to the Maestro. A used R8 would have suited my parents when it was time to downsize from the Vauxhall Carlton but they bought a damaged repaired Astra F instead.

Yes sir, this was at the top of the class in 1989 without a doubt. Not sure it was at the end of production, but they did get it right first time. Less room in the back than a Maestro, however, probably why my grandfather bought an Escort instead.

Lovely interior I especially like the door cards design, with the leather section and wood trim. There was an executive trim pack with electric rear windows, seen a few in saloon form.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting Yes MR Lloyd at the time compared to the competition it was pretty impressive. Any joy with finding a MK1 Rover Sterling yet, looking forward today, especially a detailed look at every single switch and button plus the big trip computer. What an incredible car it was in it's day.

Love this. It looks very smart on the GTi alloys. Out of interest which one trumps the other in Lloyd terms? If a forbidden fuelled car had a beige leather interior would the huge positive of the interior outweigh the fuel handicap?

Joseph I too have been waiting for this one. If I were to be able to go back in time and walk into a Rover dealership that is the exact specification I would order (well possibly also add AC). The best colour with the best wheels and that leather interior. 😍 I suspect that head unit though genuinely available in the R8 was possibly an optional upgrade for the GSi. I'd have also gone for that sane engine and gearbox as my Grandad's second R8 had that. Chris your a very lucky man to have found that one. I've no money or soave for any more cars but if this one were to ever be available I think I'd be struggling to resist though I may have to fight off Joseph for it first. I fully understand why people are so taken with these cars. They were so much better than anything else in the class at that time.

Hello again! We in New Zealand had this car brand new! From memory the Rover 216 actually won the New Zealand Car Magazine Car of the Year Award in 1990! I remember the ad on TV when I was 6 showing the car driving at speed through mountains to 'Love Lifts us Up!' My Mum also cut out a pic of the car from a magazine ad for a car picture collage for me so this car kind of jumps out at me. They were once quite popular in New Zealand but are rare now. In recent years the Government has sadly clamped down on pre-2000 cars where they have to have two WOF checks a year as opposed to one for post-2000, more recent cars. That and legislation favouring hybrids and EVs also has seen more of these cars going to the junkyard. The Concerto was popular here too, but also now a rare sight. That was one of the last carburettor cars sold new here I think.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
Yes, I remember the advert you mention, it was also used over here. I imagine there are probably hardly any R8s left in New Zealand if the Warrant of Fitness is as strict as that for the older cars!
@alaricbragg7843
@alaricbragg7843 2 года назад
@@lloydvehicleconsulting Indeed! Although there is a nineties classic car scene emerging where cars like this are highly prized here! Problem was, like the Nissan Laurels powered by a German-invented peanut oil motor, New Zealanders loved the Rovers to bits and wore them out, hence their increasing rarity! Ever seen New Zealand highways? Think James Herriot meets Mad Max! Car breaking over time!

Who's a Happy Chap today. Rover R8, beige leather interior and Honda auto power train. Rover and Honda, a match made in Heaven. Also the 214S with the 8 valve was very stipped of luxury but it did still look very attractive and distinguished having the Rover 3door bodywork. Owners did look to be driving a more upmarket car than an Escort, Renault 19, Mk2 Astra, 306 XN (also manual steering), Citroën ZX.

I bought a 1995 416 Tourer with 47000 miles on the clock last April. I have adjusted the valve clearances, replaced the cam cover gasket and the nearside dog-leg and last 2" of the sill. I have drilled holes everywhere and dosed it with waxoyl. Next jobs are the headlining and the cambelt. It's a joy to drive and work on after a modern Mercedes which I hated. Cost .... £1300 delivered from Cornwall to Stockport. I'd recommend the R8 unconditionally.

These Rover cars really do it for me. It's really motivated in part from nostalgia: I bought one once, in 1995. I cannot remember the model but it was an R8 and had the 1.4 K-series engine. For personal reasons that I won't go into here I was only ever in the car for an hour, and that as a passenger. I was not, and am not, a car enthusiast in depth but I was very keen to try out the then new K-series engine. It seemed at the time to be a technological leap forward: I had previously owned a Metro 1.0L, which I really like, too. But my purchase of the 214 was before the emergence in public of the head gasket debacle. Would you prefer the Honda engines to the K-series? Thanks for posting the video. these cars appeal to me much more than the dreaded black-interior-ed modern cars. And the creak of the leather as you moved told its own story of luxury.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
I have owned three K-series engined cars and three with the Honda D-Series. They both sort of have their advantages and disadvantages, I don't know whether one is really empirically better than the other. The K-Series was indeed an award winning engine when it came out, but then the reputation it gathered sort of destroyed to its credibility as a decent powerplant. It actually had a very long life: variants of it were made until 2016.

It's got some nice lines, hasn't it? I prefer the later cars, and personally think that an HH-R 400 saloon is even better looking, but the R8 Tourers are amazing, and this incredible survivor was stupendous.
