It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive RU-vid experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong (and frequently does)...
This time, as we test a 1995 Rover 420 GSI Tourer, owned by Mr Richardson from Furiousdriving, we try not to break a cambelt, have a look at merchandise, get surprisingly comfortable, get specific about rare VVC engined Rovers and drone on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

Really like the shape of the 400 Tourer, it's a very well proportioned car, and has a classy look to it.
@lloydvehicleconsulting

It's most certainly my favourite body style of all the R8 200s and 400s, sir.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting Mr. Lloyd, wouldn't a Vanden Plas Spec be perfect, dark metallic green, belge leather interior with green pipping and carpets, more walnut veneer trim.

Wow the 'forbidden fuel' disclaimer didn't come until the 16th minute. 😁 I struggle with the fact that the R8 is now 33 years old. Still looks modern to me and these Tourers look exceptionally nice. Love the seat upholstery - wish that manufacturers would reintroduce this style and velour too.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting Год назад
Well sir, we did have a good bit of build up, but we got there in the end. The seat fabric is typical of the later high end R8s.

We all love a R8 Rover, rover really done well with the R8 platform. A excellent review of Mr Richardson's 420 GSI.

Hi Joseph , the rear luggage cover , which is “a bit fiddly “ , is called a Tex tray , and was made partly by my good self. I used to be employed by a company called MIP . They used to manufacture interior panels and trim for Rover , Jaguar , Land Rover, Honda , Toyota . Etc; The tray is 1st moulded as a Woodstock moulding , and trimmed off, then passed to myself to apply the final fixings. You might find a little white sticker on the underside with my “mark” on, unless it’s fallen off!
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting Год назад
Thank you, sir! Most interesting information. My main concern was not to break this luggage cover, as Mr Richardson would find it hard to get another one if I did. He may indeed still have the sticker on it, but I don't remember seeing it, I am afraid.

Space, handling, torque, good seating, Metro window winders, what more could a keen Motorist ask for. Bet that BMW were blown away by how good the R8 was when the bought The Rover Group. The 3 series knew how to rust as well Sir.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting Год назад
Yes sir, the E36 was not exactly immune from rust, was it? We did enjoy ourselves very much. I was the last person to drive this apart from Mr Richardson before the cambelt service...

Thanks for this video! Did not know that Rover even made such a wagon! It goes without saying that I have never seen one in New Zealand although the sedan was popular and well promoted. I remember the ads for the sedans with the old House of Cards dude.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting Год назад
Yes, they made it from 1994-1999. A lot of people say that these are the best of the R8 Rovers, and I agree with them.

Yes, the 400 Tourer was the only Rover Estate car on sale in the 1990s.

Will always love a nightfire red Rover Tourer. My parents had one for a few years in around 2005-2009 (N725 GUB) and it was a 1995 *cough* 418 SLD *cough* with the same alloys as Matts and, while we really enjoyed it, I don't think anybody really knew how rare/special these cars are! Can't believe we let it go with 75,000 miles on for about £500. Sadly I believe it's in the scrap yard now as it has been off the road for many years :(
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting Год назад
Yes, I am afraid that we will have to avoid the forbidden fuel round here, sadly.... The Tourers are lovely, the 420s are much rarer than I thought, having had such a short production run. I quite fancy one of these for myself.
@jamesthomson3511
@jamesthomson3511 Год назад
@@lloydvehicleconsulting the need to avoid said fuel is understood, Mr Lloyd - perfectly understandable :) The tourers are only going to become more and more collectable for very good reason, it seems!

I always welcome Rover content on this channel. I’ve always thought the Tourer of the 400 series cars was the best looking body style & this 2ltr engine is the desirable one to have. I never saw many of the estates even back in the 1990’s & today I only see them at car shows. Interestingly the luggage capacity on these is 200ltr more than the subsequent 75 Tourer despite being a smaller car. One of these in dark blue with top specification trim & alloy wheels would be a very titillating car! I do wonder what mpg Mr Richardson achieves on this car?
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting Год назад
Yes sir, we would very much like one of these in dark green or dark blue, and the 420 GSI is a very rare and desirable specification. I don't believe that these were a big seller back in the day, as they were quite expensive, and they are even rarer now. Not sure about the MPG, he has been more focused on doing the cambelt recently.
