Rover Tourers 420GSi vs. 75 V6

Two handsome Tourers that! What the 75 needs is a healthy 1.8 Turbo. Makes a much livelier driving experience. And they got great mileage. My ZTT 1.8T I’ve got as much as 45 mpg out of on a long steady run 😀

A 1995 R8 Tourer that still has its Exeter Rover dealer sticker in the rear windscreen, is lovely to see. I recently drove past what used to be Exeter Rover, on Honiton Road on the A30. It's an E-Bike showroom now😢.

These are a really good couple of videos. Love em! Although the 75 is the nicer car to me, even if it's not better. Maybe a farer comparison would be the 420 against a ZT-T.

Its hard to believe the R8 dates as far back as 1988 - at that time it was way ahead of the Escorts and Astras of the day. I had a 214 R8 and later had a same year 1.4 Astra. I also had access to a 1.6 Escort of that era so I feel suitably qualified to say. I mentioned in a comment on Project Norman Butler that when the 75 (saloon) came out I thought it looked quite similar to the Jaguar S-Type. If I'd had an S-Type I'd have invested in a 'My other car's a Rover' sticker! The 75 Tourer I thought an improvement on the saloon. I wish there had been a 45 tourer though. I wonder if anyone has ever modified the rear of a 45? Now there's a project! Oh, I liked the video by the way! Johnny comes across as a great character!😁

The 75 V6's cons are what I love with my XJ. 3.0 V6 that has 240bhp, and will return 26mpg around town, 38mpg on a long trip... No brainer for me. Although, I had always wanted a 75.

I love the door shut comparison,made me laugh a lot! I had to adjust the strikers on my Rover to get the doors to shut nicely!!Great video though Paul..

I had a diesel R8 tourer, then a 75 tourer, now a ZTT. I loved my R8 but it wasn't as good as the ZTT. However, I found the 75 too dull to drive, but very quiet and smooth

And another excellent car comparison review. Ive gone off the KV6 engine as theyre geared oh so wrong. 3k revs st 70mph? Ouch. My 2.5 V6 only revs at 2k at 70 or 3.5k revs in 4th at 70. As for looks the 420 estate wins hands down. And OMG Capn. You guitar playing is coming on wonderfully 👍👏

The 75 estate is an excellent car but there's something about the styling of the 420GSi that is very special...............

Good vid! Johnny is very watchable/listenable. Really liked the filter (if there was one? the general colourisation I mean) and the music. This is the type of vid that shows us non-car-enthusiast peeps what is actually great about cars and keeps us coming back for more of the creative stuff (and cars). And did I say I liked the music?

The rover R8 models had Honda influence hence better quality build. The 75 however quality build left a lot to be desired despite been designed by BMW.

another great vid with Johnny as fun to watch as always, so well done sir on that point something you sort of overlooked is the age difference in relation to the build of both cars, the 75 is far later, maybe 15 years later in design? so all the interior will be far more flimsy and plastic to pass later crash regulations and deform when you hit it, the 420 will feel far more solid inside... but will break your knees hitting a shopping trolley lol and sharp plastic shards will impale you lol the doors will also feel far heavier with the SIP stuff going on again for later tests just a generally heavier safer car the 75 is also a far more practical car, as you touched on, built for the job no sunroof with roof bars, split tail gate for dog 3 section rear fold down no wood for kids to tear apart in rear etc and a V6 with a manual box!! so even though your now old and kids and dog and wife you can still hear that noise :) and suspension from BMW so the dog dosnt throw up in the back HAHA the 420 has the 80s lines though..... that rear is very pretty! but spoilt with that horrible rotting antenna imo it was also built in a time of bad choices lol like that rear suspension bouncing all over the road in the chase shots one word... Leyland :D outdated technology and engineering even though at the time of build it was BAE? with little real vision? a mediocre car with a high build cost? my conclusion the rear of the 420 is pretty but the 75 is better in every aspect really from suspension, to engine, to usable car the the 75 is a win lol im super not a rover fan btw so an impartial view if you like :) looking forward to the next vid

The 420 wins it by a long shot in my opinion however i do like Johnny's leather jacket so both of you should settle down and go for a nice pint of Manchester bitter.

Two ways of looking at this, personally I have always preferred the 75, I get what he says about the interior harking back to the p4 and p5 but that's not classic rover, if you look back to the p4, p5 even the p6 and sd1 they were always state of the art and looking forward and not looking back. In some ways you could argue that the r8 is more rover as it's not Tring to look back in the past.

The R8 was consistently a best seller in the UK market and did very well to redefine Rover including as a sporting marque, the delayed 75 Tourer was replacing the missing R8 equivalent after Alfa Romeo and BMW had reentered that market.

Jonny looks like he once belonged to early 1980's band like Duran Duran 😂. R8 estate for me Paull anytime, the Phoenix Consortium belong in prison.

Both really good cars in their own right , with a rarity that adds extra interest. Had a V6 75 and I was less than impressed TBH, smooth but gutless & very thirsty. Maybe MG Rover should have saved all that development/production cost and bought in the 2 litre 20v Fiat engine? 155 BHP for the 75/Tourer, and 220 BHP turbo version for the ZT/ZT-T , with the added bonus of that incredible 5 cylinder warble.
