After 1.5 years of travel, it is time to upgrade our toilet. We did a no build urine diverting toilet and after using this, it has made a big difference in our day to day life. The nice part about this was we already had this toilet, so all we ended up doing was adding and modifying it a bit more to make it even more useful.
What do you use for your adventure rig for a toilet?

Drop a ping-pong ball in the funnel. It will keep the odor down. Ball will float when in use and seal when done.

That is an interesting idea, with urine, I would feel the ping pong ball would smell quickly

Mine is similar: based on a luggable loo (pail and seat), I wired a blue auto funnel to the front of the bucket on the inside because I wanted it all in one container. The funnel had a flexible hose attached that had to be secured with a zip tie, and the hose threads into a laundry jug. Solids drop easily into the pine pellets in plastic bags in back of the jug. Works great, no smell!

Nice idea too!! Sounds like a cheap way as well

How do you keep the plastic bag up if you’ve got a funnel in there? Usually the bag would be around the rim of the bucket but the funnel wouldn’t allow that?

Awesome!!! So glad it was helpful!! If you sit too close to the front it can cause too much pressure to the milk jug so id almost ad a piece of wood at the front to support it. Other wise the urine diverter makes a huuuge difference

If you spray some vinegar down the funnel after use, that will help with the smells.

We tried that and found the vinegar and urine mix was terrible. We have tried a few different varieties. Currently been using citric acid from the canning section at the store mixed with water.

Wow! Before finding your video today, I did the exact same thing like you when I found that plastic toilet and a plastic urine diverter. I did not have to build a ugly toilet box from wood. I will borrow your idea of using a 3-gallon bucket underneath instead of the tiny bucket that comes with the plastic toilet.

I've been living with various versions of dry toilets, lugable loos, a wooden diy one but this one looks it'd be the best for me. I need a new one and did not want to buy one of those over-priced composting toilets. But my diy skills suck. After watching your video, I ordered the toilet and the funnel from amazon. Thank you for figuring this out! Can't wait to adapt it as you did. Have you found a good bucket that is slightly shorter? Also, does it seem kinda short when you sit on it with whatever bucket you use? Seems like it's a bit shorter than a "real" toilet. I might want to put it on a small platform, I think. Subscribed to your channel because of this excellent video. Thanks again.
@abeandmel
@abeandmel Год назад
Aww so glad this option will help you! I feel like the black toilet size is similar in height to a regular toilet. You could add a touch smaller bucket but you have to remember that you then have to add a smaller urine jug. So depends on what works for you. Thanks so much for subscribing! Let us know how the diy goes for you!
@betsy5749
@betsy5749 Год назад
@@abeandmel Gotcha. Definitely want a big urine jug! Have you been using your toilet like this awhile now? Does it seem like it's getting stress from being sorta perched on the taller bucket or seems totally strong still?
@stevebrawn2619
@stevebrawn2619 Год назад
Great job MacGyvering! We have a cargo trailer camper, and we've been using the Luggable Loo with pellets and no diverter. It works fine, but needs to be emptied fairly often as the urine weighs a lot, and because it soaks into the pellets and causes them to swell, we go through a lot of pellets. I'm considering making something more permanent out of wood, but your toilet looks like it works really well. I wonder if it would be possible to cut the 5 gallon bucket down so that it still took the weight, but the black cover sat flat on the ground as well? Makes it look better cosmetically, but also might make it a bit more stable. Great job, and happy camping!
@abeandmel
@abeandmel Год назад
Yes it could work with a shorter bucket, you just would have to remember every inch you go down, you have to go down an inch on your pee jug as well. It made a big difference going to a urine diverter as our first 1.5 years on the road we were buying a lot of pellets and throwing a lot of trash out because of it

I have the same toilet. I got 2 of the buckets with mine. I modified one of the buckets to make a protective ring/bottomless bucket. Put a plywood base on mine to make it easy to move. A funnel, small bucket, and plastic bin to catch any overflow completed the project. Yours is easier, mine needed to be more moveable(& self contained) in my build. If i didn't have carpet, I think I'd do yours. 👍

@Nowindresistance. I cut the bottom off of 1 of the buckets that came with my toilet. It is oval shaped to match the toilet & makes protective sides to cover the open space around the smaller inner bucket that catches toilet paper etc. Helps to direct/contain things into the “poo” bucket.

It seems that the bucket is too tall, keeping the toilet housing off of the ground. I have one of these toilets and did something similar to what you did, but your method is a little better. However my toilet housing sits all the way down with the 5 gallon bucket in it.The problem is that lid fits tight on the pale that comes with the toilet, not the toilet housing, leaving a gap. This will let bacteria escape and can make you sick. Trust me, I found out the hard way. You have a great idea there except for that lid. I suppose you could make a lid to fit the housing itself out of plywood or something. In any case, make sure that thing is sealed when not in use.
@abeandmel
@abeandmel Год назад
Thanks for sharing. We did end up sealing it a bit more but then the front started to fall it. We would Probably look into a shorter bucket.
@DanielleD2895
@DanielleD2895 9 месяцев назад
I love this! The only issue I was seeing is that the toilet doesn’t fit snugly over the bucket and the funnel. It seem to hover above it in a wobbly way. See you like that or does it go down further and stay snug? Also, when pulling it back up, does it pull on them in a way that could tip them over? Do they get stuck is what I’m asking.
@abeandmel
@abeandmel 9 месяцев назад
The toilet comes with a bucket with no bottom that then snuggly fit in the bucket. They dont get stuck when you pull up the toilet. If you sit too far on the front and use a flimsy milk jug it can smoosh in
@charlesmcdaniel6244

Happy holidays. Couple of questions. 1. In the video using the 5gal bucket. It doesn’t look like the toilet housing is sitting on the ground. 2. Do you think a urine and poo divider would fit in the unit. Thanks 0:03
@abeandmel
@abeandmel Год назад
Sorry, are you asking whether a different urine and poo divider would sit on top of it in order for it to sit flat? Yes, the 5 gallon bucket is what takes the weight. The housing is both decorative and holds the urine diverter in place. The bucket could probably be sawed down or a shorter one found if you wanted the housing to sit flat.
@alanosborne1947
@alanosborne1947 Год назад
I like the idea but I noticed the toilet does not fit over the bucket very well. Ideally it should sit firmly on the floor of your rig. Could you use a shorter bucket?
@abeandmel
@abeandmel Год назад
Yeah, longterm probably not the best option as far as durability goes. With a shorter bucket the pee jug would have to go shorter as well. Could put a few wood blocks on the sides for longterm durability.
