Academy Award-winning actor Tommy Lee Jones reacts to the positive reviews of his performances in "No Country for Old Men" and "In the Valley of Elah."
Tommy Lee deserved the Oscar for his performance in 'No Country...' His acting was so quiet and soulful. It wasn't a flashy, quirky performance. The acting here simply demanded your full attention.
With all your respect, the only brilliant person that deserved an Oscar got it, his name is Javier Braden. Tell me something, do you think Tommy or most of the actors in Hollywood could have done the acting that Javier did? I would be money, most can't. Not a whole lots of actors in Hollywood with the caliber of Brandon or Pacino. Even a great actor like Tom Hanks can't do that role.
"When I figured out that I could live anywhere I wanted to, 'in my wisdom' I decided to live at home." Now THAT is the definition of a totally grounded human being. Easy to admire; hard to live up to.
I dont know why I didnt expect Tommy to be this well spoken, but god damn is he well spoken. Takes a massive amount of intelligence to concisely answer the fairly tough questions he does
Yeah. It's more like an interrogation at times. Tommy (and others in interviews are clearly about to expand on their initial comments, when the interviewers interrupts and asks the obvious).
Charlie was a great interviewer long ago. But, he began to believe he knew more than he really did. So, he oddly began to interrupt his guests with out-of-touch comments which even made his guests frustrated. You can see it in TLJ’s face. Pure frustration.
A bad interviewer is greedy for screen time, so they go on and on with endless questions that have no substance--just so the camera stays on them. A good interviewer does research on the guest, asks pertinent, smart, concise questions, and then gets out of the way.
I think that if you were to consider this more like a podcast is today It becomes more acceptable. Interviewers like Sean from hot ones specifically ask questions that are going to draw out a long answer that will fill time. Skilled interviewers like Sean also specifically do not interrupt responses. I honestly think that this is more of a conversation than an interview. Now with that being said I would say that it was completely on accident when it is considered that in fact he was attempting to conduct an interview. For that point I agree with you that Charlie simply interrupts his interviewees too much.
I wouldn't say that. He might be educated and definitely a Great Actor but not a brainer. He said about Jim Carrey once for instance that he is "a comedian, not an actor"... Well, interesting statement after watching Jim's performance in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Man on the Moon or The Truman Show.
An absolutely great performance. Can't imagine anyone else in this part. Tommy Lee Jones is one of our finest actors. Lonesome Dove and No Country are two of my all time favorites. Tommy Lee Jones is responsible for that. A very intelligent, thoughtful man.
This is first time I've really listened to an interview with Tommy Lee Jones and man what a great man . He seems very humble and down to earth. Been in a lot of great movies and given the films taht extra umph it needed.
Imagine if people of significant talent and valued bodies of work would even remotely acknowledge comments of the contrary from those with experience of the contrary......
"Read the screenplay, understand it as well as you can, do your best to find out what the director wants to see and make it possible in every way you can for him to see it". What a powerful description of the mission of a screen actor. Thank you Mr. Jones, I for my part have seen you do it over and over again in many movies. I love the way you remain transparent or non-existent as an actor. I see your character in the story, and not Tommy Lee Jones when I watch you perform in a movie scene. I admire your talent and hard work only after the movie. Thank you really, for the wonderful time you have given me and my beloved company when watching your movies.
not only for actors. as an aspiring cinematographer, that entire sentence you quoted also accurately describes what the mission of a cinematographer is! hell, it describes what all key crew members should do!
Mr. Jones has earned his place as truly one of the very best film actors. There really haven’t been that many at his level of ability. Always a fascinating and incredibly believable performer.
Tommy, he's one of the few who I still like after a interview. I quit watching interviews because once l seen how an actor really is, sometime, I can't watch their movies because I don't like them. But Tommy, Iam fine with. I've lived in Wyoming and I have been around many like Tommy Lee Jones types. Its very refreshing being around people like him. Very mater of fact.
i have liked tommy lee jones since his soap beginnings BUT..... fell in love with him and gus during lonesome dove.... this is the first time i've ever seen him in a sit down.........i like how he speaks. he weighs what he wants to say, and makes sure what he wants to say, is what comes out of his mouth. not an open mouth, spew forth kinda guy......i like him even more AND......nor only is he a fine actor, he's a damn great one too.......
West ( where I live ) and west central Texas (where Tommy is from ) is no place to sell BS. It may well have more soul per population than anywhere in the country. Lives by his own code, not really just a moral and honest local one that's all. Tommy makes us old Texans very proud as you can tell! We see some of the best qualities of ourselves in this man, he provides the rest on his own.
I was obsessed with this man ( in a good way), lol...back in the 1990's. I devoured all of his movies over and over again. Don't ask me how many times I watched "The Fugutive" remake with him and Harrison Ford. All these years later and I still remain in awe of him. A lot of that comes fromthe mystery surrounding him. He's always stayed out of the spotlight and off the of the covers of the tabloids somehow, and I love that about him. The mystery only makes him that much more intriguing to me.
He is simple sublime.., I can’t not believe every word or breathe he takes… Never seen him in a bad scene… he must be a real character in life as well😂👍
He's in my personal list of the Top 10 Favorite/Best Actors of All Time. Not everybody can, or will, take the time to sit down and watch a TV mini-series.....I get that. But if you've never watched Lonesome Dove....You're missing out not only on one of the greatest cinematic experiences, but also missing Mr Jones' greatest characters/performances.
Again I am thankful that Rose is not on the air, not just for his behavior but that he was so pompous, so in love with his own voice and has such a puffed up ego that he never let his guest answer, never heard what they were saying. Compare that to Off Camera with Sam Jones where he let the guests talk.
I love TLJ most of all that he is a no nonsense, no bs, & he's just himself who just happens to possess an enormous talent & charm!! Great man, epic Texan!!!
TOJ has at least in my simple bind a brilliant way of speaking which makes him so interesting. He is usage of iambic pentameter, his pauses, The way he presents himself with humbleness yet with a side dish of a kick your backside and you’ll know it but he doesn’t say it. It would be an honor to me if someday I could meet him in person but find him wonderful even from afar and enjoy what he does on screen to bring us entertainment at home. I have no idea what he’s like in real life but I have a feeling that he’s just as humble and not a bigot. Thank you for your entertainment on screen for all of us. God bless stay safe and healthy
First time I saw Tommy Lee Jones was in Coal Miner's Daughter I haven't seen all of his films but some was impressed with his intensity his demeanor and I'm not surprised that he's going into directing and screenwriting and I definitely am looking forward to seeing No Country for Old Men
Happy Birthday Tommy Lee Jones, and may the Peace Be With U. From Harlingen Texas. September 15, 1946 September 15, 2019 through September 15, 3019 1. Agent K - Men In Black 1, 2, 3 1997 - 2002 - 2012 2. Chip Hazard - Small Soldiers 1998 3. Mike Roark 1997
I would venture to say Tommy Lee is the most no nonsense actor in Hollywood. His expressions at award shows are priceless. Most of which I agree with when it involves the weak to the point of embarrassing jokes written for presenters.
"Islands in the Stream" has already been made into a movie, starring George C. Scott as "Thomas Hudson," the painter. The book contains some of Hemingway's best writing, in my opinion, especially about family and other human relationships. Edit: Released in 1977.
This is one of those rare movie where everyone on the screen is hitting home runs. The woman in the office at the trailer park. The gas station owner. It must be a testament to the skills of the Coen brothers. Another film like this is Sling Blade
As a fellow Texan the Sheriff character Mr Jones plays makes perfect sense to me All the elements of the movie are very real today that most people can directly relate to in one form or Another..
Was there 'ever' a worse interviewer than this guy? In love with his own voice, in love with his -interpretation- of whatever was being discussed, never-ever let a guest complete an answer....
I'd forgotten how much Charlie Rose irritates me. He pushes his own point and tries to score points with the person he's interviewing, rather than just exploring the subject or the person he's interviewing. I've always found that annoying as hell.
Charlie Rose is so insufferable. He asks Tommy a question, and when Tommy answers, Rose says "Exactly." As if Charlie was the teacher giving a test and the audience needs Charlie to verify that Tommy's opinion is correct, because Charlie is the authority on everything. And when Tommy says he knows the author who wrote the book and has read all of his books, Charlie has to immediately say he knew that. Charlie can't subordinate himself to an interview subject, no matter who it is. I'm glad he got what was coming to him.
Fascinating! It's always an incredible experience to get to hear the man behind the movie talk about himself! Charlie Rose keeps it interesting and engaging! What a time, the fact that the internet allows access to stuff like this reminds me of how I initially felt as a kid first getting access to the internet. The ability to be able to access broadcasts that otherwise would have been lost to time, essentially hidden away in some inaccessible corporate archive. RU-vid is the greatest god damn thing ever lol
Tommy Lee Jones is very humble , he’s one of the greatest, gee I am so impressed how he really do not come across as arrogant, the way he talks about Clint Eastwood’s it’s a truly sign of his genius and ways to maintain his ego grounded, so much respect for him .
I think there was a truly philosophically important statement Mr. Jones made about being inured to what we see on TV. That goes for the Internet as well. Really smart man.
At the end. He led him perfectly with his ramblings… I wish he would have asked at the Rene something to the effect of “and what is your reflection on the journey/ or what would you say looking back?”
Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall will always be my western cowboy movie Hero’s Lonesome Dove will in my mind will always be the greatest western ever made and they where the two that made it great
Rose just can't handle someone knowing something and saying it (when answering a question) when he knows it as well. I have no idea what Jones said about the NCFOM question/meaning. Rose says "Exactly" right as Jones is answering.
A brilliant man, a great actor. I have learned so much and I haven't even finished the video yet. I will watch it again and my next book...NCFOM or Hemenway's last book?
It's because the whole world has been hypnotized by "the box" ever since they were born. Most people have no idea, nor could they fathom living without TV, or movies, and they willingly buy whatever the person on the screen is selling. It will be the downfall of the human race. We are already seeing this. It's why Hollywood actors think they are relevant in terms of politics. They realize the power they wield, regardless of their inability to think logically.
At the outset, I like how Tommy Lee Jones doesn't allow Charlie Rose to force him into his usual interview stencil. I had never noticed that Charlie forces a particular commentary from his guests and here Tommy Lee Jones resists the pushing into a certain narrative , thereby breaking the mold. Charlie is nothing more than a more bookish Jerry Springer tabloid journalism. Tom maintains truth, Charlie is fluff. But, in the end, interesting to hear about Jones' film project.
"islands in the Stream" is a great story. I sure hope Mr. Jones gets the movie made. It was once done one with George C. Scott. It was a profoundly sad movie, but the dialogue was true enough. I read it years ago when I was in the Coast Guard. Time to revisit. Time to go.
