mr t yes....beautiful.....but not the raw, real, emotion-packed version that it became. I don't think the "original" version, although beautiful, holds a candle to the iconic version we all know and love. I honestly think this song is slowly becoming the most favorite song of my life. Wow....
Still don't think that "original" version is RAW and full of angst and emotional hurt. The original version, in Gwen's own words, was PRE-BREAKUP. It was all about, "oh, things are so lovely and beautiful, you're so good, we live each other and we're gonna be together forever....". However, the version that WE know and love was written POST-BREAKUP. It's full of the rawest emotion possible.....that hurt you feel after such a major breakup. This wasn't someone she was just kinda dating. She loved him, was planning to marry him, and they'd just built a life together for the past 7 years. After the painful breakup, the most raw lyrics were written.....and became the iconic "Don't Speak" that we all know and love so much❤️. The angst and pure emotion in her voice (she actually cried when she'd sing it on stage during concerts after they'd broken up) is just palpable. Yes, I agree.....the original version is beautiful.....but it's beautiful in that "pretty little love ballad" kind of way. But this final version?? Absolutely NOTHING compares to it. I think it's sooooo good because Gwen is singing it straight from her heart. It's the personal story of what happened to HER. It's painful just listening to it! She is amazing no matter what she sings. What a voice😍
@@mrt445 I loooove the original version too. I hear you! I searched for the more complete version which is out there. It depends on where u are in life I think on rather u appreciate the both raw versions. I am sure she loves both. I loved the 2nd version when I was a kid cuz my sweetheart broke up with me so it was a death sad song. I love the original version now because I am happily married for 21 years and we do spend everyday today so of course I appreciate the original more. I have both versions on my Playlist so when I have pool or hot tub parties my company will be surprise to hear there is another version.
@@kimberlybellefontaine1215 @Cherry Cola Don't get me wrong I'm not saying the main version isn't as amazing, to me it's one of the greatest songs ever written. This original version is raw and emotional in an uplifting way, I wish they released it as well.
When I first heard that this song used to be a love song, I was surprised and had to find this. Now that I've heard this version, it makes so much sense now why the song we know is so real. A breakup from a seven year relationship makes you understand how something can metamorphose. The fact that this song underwent its own metamorphosis makes it that much *more authentic. No wonder we love it so much. If you are reading this - I just want you to know that you have amazing taste in music.
It's funny, she describes this version as..."we were just kids in a garage...diddling around"...and then she sings, with her absolutely amazing voice, an incredibly intimate version of Don't Speak. Wow, is there any better example of why incredibly talented people ultimately rise to the top. She has great vocal talent.
When in a band like this you get many women wanting to be with you. By having your girl friend by your side every minute of every day, no matter how pretty and hot she is, it can get frustrating,. That's my guess.
Dont speak is a classic I had a relationship on and off when I went to Dj and rapping school in New Jersy went there to see my brother and sister it was hard I became secluded no visitors learned a lot on rap and dub basically I used subliminal messages to rock the crowd I would pick out the best looking girl and rhym what we did and what we are going to do know it was all lies the way the crowd reacted they believed me .Hang in there. its tough work keep going all the way up.
Oh it hurts so much watch Gwen crying while singing the final version. The original version sounds like bossa nova and jazz. I love it, very calm and chill. Gwen's voice is like a hurricane of emotions. Anyone can be a singer, but not everyone can convey emotions like Gwen Stefani does even nowadays (2023).
Call me crazy, but _"Don’t Speak"_ is one of the best songs of all time. Genuinely ageless. Plus I love the Spanish guitar solo and Very subtle, but beautiful violins at 5:47
+Brittany Star nothing dorky about it, i hope! but just to comfort you: I was born in '81 und i am actually kind of afraid how fitting this is to my situation. Long story short: This song gets people on an emotional level, hopefully no reason to feel bad about it ;(
Andy Volvo I think you just hit the nail on the head. That original (alternate) version is.....nice. I'd describe it as "nice." But compared to the version we all know and love?? It doesn't hold a candle! The final version is f***ing fabulous and the emotion is just sooooo real and raw. I never wish(ed) her any heartbreak.....but can you just imagine if they never broke up? We may not have this iconic song. At least not the real/raw version. Funny how life goes sometimes....
The Artist's curse, pain is such a powerful emotion that I can turn a beautiful song into a masterpiece destined to be remember for thousands of years. It's so much better.
Watching this was ..... SAD!!! 😢😖 The vibe was abnormally intense this performance, no? But DID ANYONE BESIDES ME FIND IT A LITTLE ODD THAT GWEN DIDN’T SO MUCH AS GIVE TONY A SINGLE -LOOK- THE WHOLE WAY THROUGH THIS VIDEO???? Not a glance in his direction, not a playful mug, not a single acknowledgment of his presence ... despite the song she was singing was entirely written about him & her??
Well she was already crying just by thinking of it, i am sure she would have lost it if she looked at him. They were together for so long, must have been painful.
From the reaction of the crowd, you can tell that they were blown away and didn’t expect the original version to be that good. I know I fucken was. I didn’t want them to stop playing it lol
She always had the magic touch with this song. Through soft and powerful moments, she's able to sound like she is crying the whole time. Then I realized that she actually IS crying almost the whole time. It's so beautiful, and hard to watch at the same time.
Man, the songs that come from real, raw, painful places, like this one and some of Adele's stuff, just reach out freaking grab you and yank you right in... and I love it!
Alanis Morrisett, "you oughta know" Her pain and anger.. wow. There is a live performance, cant remember which but older, very small stage, silky shirt, looks like on a show rather then concert but she is INTENSE! Most real performance, leaves you speechless.
The Level Of No Fucks Given By The Guy On The Bass Is Where I Want To Be Knowing One Of The Most Popular Break Up Songs Is About Him While He Casually Plays Along
What an awesome live performance! Not many bands can do this....sound like a studio when they are live. Gwen's sense of pitch is perfect...and timing. And the instruments are phenomenal....
La versión original también aparece en el material extra del DVD "Live in th tragic Kindgom"(Bonus features>Home Movies 1992-1997) y tiene un arreglo acústico con acordeón que suena muy muy muy bien : )
So much meaning in this song, feelings are expressed differently by everyone in this world. Gwen definitely expressed what and how she was feeling when she sung this song. These lyrics are true
Love this, love the fact that brother & sister worked together on this incredible track & yet produced two such unique & original tracks. Eric's original version is beautiful, with echoes of 'simple' later No Doubt ballads like Simple Kind Of Life & Running. But Gwen's breakup version of Don't Speak (the famous version) is one of the greatest rock ballads in history! What an incredible thing for her to have produced at such a young age!
I don't see any other female singer with the emotion expressed by Gwen. She's practically crying in this, but does it in a way others can see and understand in their own lives. True genius: using art to express humanity to others, and in a way others can learn and understand...to come to grips more with their own relationships...amazing. I don't see anyone else doing it...and she writes on top of that! amazing talent, and self-taught, like the others in No Doubt.
I think that by the end, she truly IS crying. And it's not fake, either. What a tornado of emotion and artful expression. If you don't feel the beauty and sorrow in her heart watching this, you can't be human.
Gwen always performs every songs of ND with her truest emotions. No Doubt is the purest form of innocence playing the music they love without understanding the mastery of their talents and immense effects they have on generations to follow. Thank you
I love love love "I used to love you" but I'm kind of bummed Gwen didn't use it as a no doubt song with this sad rock vibe to the song :( don't speak is such a masterpiece!
Everybody may have had a 'suggestion' bit there is no denying the quality of Gwen, perhaps she didn't realise then but she is truly a very natural first class singer and performer..
It would be great if they launch a 20th anniversary edition of Tragic Kingdom next year, even better if they include a early version of Dont Speak like that one.
Peggy Bachler I was thinking the EXACT same thing! Wonder what was going through his mind and what he was feeling.....and especially when Gwen said "and then Tony broke up with me....". Oh man! What an emotional flashback that had to be.
Gwen has a song about theire friendship called "cool". I think you probably have listened to that. It's such a beautiful song and shows how gwen is a good songwriter.
This song and mr brightside, about breakups about people in the band and they have no problem singing it because it was such a hit. Tony Canal for No Doubt and Brandon Flowers for The Killers
Madonna was soooo inept and was such a terrible singer, and Gwen is such a classic singer, one for the ages, timeless and all class. Just needed to make that comparison for those who still don't understand the difference.
That subject has come up more than once in various interviews... I can’t recall if he calls himself an idiot or not, but the emotional response got us that second better version.
it breaks my own heart... this song just like says how horrible the breakup was in the most beautiful way. i still cant look at a pic of gwen & tony now & say that everything is all cool LOL
Gwen said the first version was PRE break up. The well known well is AFTER the breakup, so this song would still exist even if they never broke up. That's what Gwen says here. So the song would exist even if they never broke up.
Pëñūß Åñïś totally agree......and I don't think it's just bc we know it better. I think it's bc this final version is just so packed with real and raw emotion. Almost everyone can relate to these feelings she's singing about. We've all experienced that pain. She expresses it sooooo well, not just in her lyrics, but also in the way she SINGS those lyrics. She's iconic.
The original version is pretty much richier (??? my english is no good, sorry), it's impressive how radio/tv/overall commercial demands simplify things too much the album version still a classic, though
Our memories Well, they can be inviting But some are altogether Mighty frightening As we die, both you and I :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
what's amazing is that the people playing the cello, etc. probably went to college and studied music...and they are performing music written by 20 somethings in their garage...who had no so called education....but are creative and talented...
You and me We used to be together Everyday together always I really feel That I'm losing my best friend I can't believe This could be the end It looks as though you're letting go And if it's real Well I don't want to know Don't speak I know just what you're saying So please stop explaining Don't tell me cause it hurts Don't speak I know what you're thinking I don't need your reasons Don't tell me cause it hurts Our memories Well, they can be inviting But some are altogether Mighty frightening As we die, both you and I With my head in my hands I sit and cry Don't speak I know just what you're saying So please stop explaining Don't tell me cause it hurts (no, no, no) Don't speak I know what you're thinking I don't need your reasons Don't tell me cause it hurts It's all ending I gotta stop pretending who we are... You and me I can see us dying...are we? Don't speak I know just what you're saying So please stop explaining Don't tell me cause it hurts (no, no, no) Don't speak I know what you're thinking I don't need your reasons Don't tell me cause it hurts Don't tell me cause it hurts!
