New client asked for emergency service call for no heat on the 2nd floor of the rental property. We found an old Hydrotherm gas boiler with 2 ElectroZone zone valves! OMG! My God help us!
Fortunately, the old Honeywell heating only thermostat on the 2nd floor was defective.

Electro zone last forever. The most reliable valves made. They can be cleaned with dish soap on the plungers and they are good for another 30yrs. Place a screwdriver on top and see if it is magnetic it is not calling

It is a testament to how things were made back in the day. The further you go back the quality was so much better than the designed to fail just past warrantee. I replaced a boiler that was in an old inn years ago that had been converted from coal. The oil burner on it was from the early 1960's and the boiler its self-had the faceplate and doors dated 1890. The Boiler and piping had no leaks. The piping was all painted and though quit thin in some spots as we removed it had never leaked. The conditions of the boiler room its self, humidity and rust prevention from the outside can lead to the pipes failing from the outside as much as the inside. Cleaning and removal of flux or other things that will cause the pipe to degrade from the outside can help keep your system working longer and look "TiT's". Alway be a professional like the pipe doctor and some day 40 years from now someone will complement your work. #LoveBosch

I've been doing some reading on this phenomenon... and believe it or not, things back in the day *were not* always made all that much better - in plenty of cases, they were made with more materials and were significantly less efficient to operate than modern versions. The reason we *think* old things were more reliable is due to what's called "survivorship vias". Check out the wikipedia article on it.

@@dregenius I am quite sure none of the boilers I installed will still be kicking over 100 years from now or even car from today will not be here like model T's. I have also pulled out many that were installed in the 30's 40's and 50's but nothing I see made today will make it that far.

ive seen those valves before.. since I was in the business in the 90s, there were still quite a few of those around, some of that older stuff you have to watch, the current pull is high enough for the coil on the relay that it can weld the contacts on the newer electronic thermostats.. since they have one zone already electronic you probably will be OK.. you could see the sparks on the mercury when you kicked it in and out.. thats flyback from the relay coil usually.. hopefully your white-rodgers stat has a diode to mitigate that..

To Check that old Electrozone valve to see if it was opening or not theres a knob underneath it where you can open it manually to supply heat to that zone. Yes, they are old and unique using 18V DC current, but they last a long time, including the Zone Controller. On a side note, its interesting that those 50 year old suitcase Hydrotherm's from the late 60's/Early 70's were 80% efficient. Best part about them is that the burners are cast iron and last a lifetime. Not today's stainless steel crap that lasts on average between 10 and 15 years.

There are still a bunch of hydro therms here in Bergen County. From what I understand the company was here in Northvale. I have a couple of those zone valves in my garage. What sucks is there DC so if you want to change something you have to convert everything in the low voltage. I was told when you ordered those boilers you ordered how many zones you needed and it came packaged all together already. Just a heads up in the control there is a fuse sometimes it goes.

I've only seen one house with these zone valves. Apparently they were made by some guy in his garage. They used 12v dc. We actually have a brand new electro zone valve thats never been used at the shop. It can be yours for 700 dollars

Mike it’s a rental Im sure the tenant pays the heat. The landlord would prefer to replumb the system using modern valves or pumps. Just saying that system(looked amazing) could easily out last any modern high efficiency boilers. (All brands suck). Just my 2 cents. But I’ve had customers that keep old coal conversions running and they don’t care about gas cost.

Electrozone company went out of business at least 20 years ago. There used to be a company that rebuilt ELZ valves out of Kearny NJ but they are gone too. Best bet is to find used one pulled from old Hydrotherms that were working. Other than that, replace entire Electrozone system (including zone box) to a modern 24V Honeywell or Taco system. You would also need to replace the gas valve if it isnt 24 volts.

It's funny I was about to make a comment about Peter Pan being scared of low voltage until y'all pulled it off and it's line voltage and yeah I'd be a little scared too it only hurts for a minute or you don't feel a thing and then they find you as a pile of ashes but that's usually with three phase 480 or higher LOL
