While toucans in shelters are a one in a million, I can tell you that all across the country, there are birds of all ages that need homes. Mostly small/medium parrot sorts, w/ an occasional large, macaw whiling away the hours, often climbing deeper into depression or madness as all birds are akin to having eternal toddlers that need attention & a rotating smorgasbord of toys to occupy them. I applaud your employment, as I am a “death positive” person (for those unaware of what this means: *NO* I do not want to die, but I don’t fear it & when I do, I hope my husband, family & friends will help wash & prepare my body before burial in a “green” cemetery, namely Steelmantown Cemetery, here in New Jersey). EoL “doulas” are just as needed as traditional doulas & while hospice care of all sorts can be soul taxing, it’s also highly rewarding to help a decedent & their loved ones at an equally intimate experience as a birth is. As more people are being left financially destroyed by the choices of their state government due to COVID-19 “panic,” more people are having to give up their pets, so be sure to go/call/check the website of your local animal shelters & rescue groups to see if there are “birds in need.” The cat rescue group I support & help actually had taken in a green cheeked conure, a few parakeets & finches (beep beep🥰) in the past two months. Luckily, they all were adopted. Sorry to blather on in this wall o’ text. Have a wonderful weekend.

The hardest part of the job at the moment is that the families cannot be with their loved ones when they’re in the hospital. It’s heartbreaking on so many levels. ❤️ Regarding the aging birds of all kinds - YES to everything you said there, too. 🙏❤️ In fact, after the Toupac cuddle video a while back, I started keeping tabs on ALL of the birds locally who are up for adoption & aged, because while toucans are lovely, I could just as easily love ANY of the macaws, conures, doves, chickens, geese, budgies, love birds or ringnecks I see on the rescue site! 😍😍😍It takes a LOT of self control not to bring them all home, but I’m not set up for a bird right now. I have decided , however, that adopting one or more aged birds is part of the future plan. 🥰
