When I was a child I found a freezing sparrow, My mom took care of it and we let it go in the spring. I am 76 now and it remains one of my fondest memories.
On my way to school as a kid i found two sparrows fighting each other...one of them was bleeding...I pick it up and keep it under my jersey.....I didnt tell anyone and took it home after school and take care of it.....I'll never forget it
That’s a goldcrest, they are the smallest bird in Europe and are usually very skittish. They are usually found in coniferous or mixed forests. So glad you helped the poor little guy
I see how beautiful and loving you are to one of our animal family members. I wish the world was full of people like you kind sir. Thank you for helping this beautiful bird.
Birds sometimes get drunk from eating rowan berries in the autumn. That's one of the main reasons birds around here crashes into windows, they might look like they're dying when it's not moving after the crash, but it's usually nothing to worry about. It's just chocked. When u put the bird into the aquarium the bird was jumping around in there... I'm happy it survived, probably thanks to the things from nature that u put in there. Small birds need to eat almost all the time to survive. I've read that after trying to help a small bird over here that crashed. I just watched the bird for a while and then it flew away.
Thanks for your kindness! I'm a bird rehabilitation center volunteer, and if you don't mind, I'll give you a couple of tips for the future. 1. These birds feed on small insects, which are found on the branches and leaves of mostly coniferous trees. Due to their incredibly small weight and fast metabolism, they are forced to constantly eat, otherwise they can die in a few hours. It is very lucky that you brought plants from nature to the bird, so he probably found food in them. 2. Also, the doctors of our center recommend not to force water the birds that hit the glass. With a concussion, this can cause additional cerebral edema and worsen the condition of the bird. It is enough to put a container of water next to the bird, or wet the food. UPD but I personally think in this case you have done it right: just offered water, so the bird drunk as many as wanted. Birds drink less water than mammals, and it might not be needed at all, but since little guy became more lively after water supply, - it was done for good. 3. If you notice that birds continue to crash into your windows (this happens especially often during spring and autumn migrations), you can hang bright ribbons moving in the wind on the windows - this will scare away the birds. Good luck!
@@karyoplasma yes, that can work too. But, based on my experience, not all homeowners are ready to seal part of the windows :) and sometimes birds get used to such stickers. I don’t know why such indifference is connected, but it happens.
@@chloris6349 i've read about a UV window film that looks clear to us but reflects light in a spectrum our eyes can't detect without a UV flashlight but is perfectly visible to our feathered friends. i think you can find them on amazon.
4:00 this is called chittering and its a common response when cats want to hunt/attack something but cant. Usually its because theyre behind a window or something. But with cookie I think she knows not to, and shes fighting her own primal urges lol. What a good trained kitty. :)
This cat: hunting instinct for a bird. my mouser cat when she sees a mouse right in front of her: o-o She refuses to hunt anything lol. She lives a comfy life :D
@@mrfilmer9270 How the heck is it getting rarer? Pretend like there doesn't happen like thousands of good things everyday. Pretend like your life is horrible, and you can't speak your mind freely. Pretend like you don't have a home. Be thankful that you're even safe, because of the advancements that humans have made. Fkn hell.
Just so people are made aware, this is a Goldcrest. It's actually more alarming to find a Goldcrest that allows you so close, compared to many other garden birds.
Had most likely crashed into their window and stunned itself. That could have been released at the time it was put into the glass box. Was moving well enough at that point to go off by itself. Had to look after one for about 45 mins earlier this year that had also bumped into a window. Well done to OP for caring, though maybe put the cat in another room next time.
I'm one of those people:) I've tried to save nine mice from my cats three died, two sparrows (one from my cats) both survived, three pigeons one survived, one doormouse/gliss gliss died, and I think that's it?
@G E T R E K T lol first smart comment I've seen I rescue birds and they do crash in windows quite alot and they be in shock because of the crash so they don't run or anything but after a day they recover unfortunately some get nerve damaged or paralysed
Yup! No offense to Slivki, but kitty really wanted that bird by the end of the video - when the bird was actually showing signs of being active again. The noise is known as "Cat chatter". Cat's chatter when they're on the hunt, or excited by something often just out of reach. The cat incantation was the kitties way of saying "I desire to hunt that thing".
@@GuilRosmer Didn't cats start meowing only because of humans because they tried to imitate babies? More that I think about it, cats are clever little buggers.
@@Darkctan Yea, it showed those signs. But it didn't straight up jump on it to hunt it down (which is difficult to be found in cats). Especially because I lost my sister (my cat) 3 days ago. She was the most well taught cat I had ever seen. Even my birds has become friends of him. She was poisoned by some insect, which might have been trying to get into the house, and was attacked by Tom (my cat). Still can't stop crying for her...
Most people are like this man and will offer help to help another living creature if they are in need. The news media and social media only focus on the worst aspects of humanity and that gives us a warped perception of the people out there.
I love birds so much. A while back I helped nurse a sparrow back to health and it still comes back to visit from time to time. Little guys got a spot on its beak so I know it’s the same one. I leave my window open most of the time when I’m in my room and it’ll just come and chill on the windowsill
I had a small bird (a Great tit) mom bringing her chicks to my balcony, searching for food. I gave them some small pieces of cheese which they liked, and they kept coming back, every morning at the same time to get some snacks. The following 2-3 years, she came back with new offspring, wanting to get them fed. If I did not open and came with food quickly enough, they all lined up, hovering by the window and pick at t it with their beaks, looking in. Fantastic!
Really, really glad to see the little guy fully recovered from his ordeal of flying into the window, so many birds loose their lives by not being able to see it, putting stickers or tape on the glass certainly helps
I tthink some zoos use soap or something for outdoor enclosures iirc... (I think I saw that Chicago's Brookfield or Lincoln Park Zoo did that in the past)
I have had birds crash into clean windows here on somewhat of a regular basis being so close to the woods. Unfortunately when this happened both times the bird did indeed die. Please stay safe and secure in your part of the world. You are in our prayers.
Aw... I actually had a similar situation a few weeks ago. A poor bird was hobbling around in our driveway, it feet both bent backwards. He was missing his tail, as well. We eventually caught him, and attempted to help him, but, the next day, he had sadly passed. We fed him, gave him water, and put him in the warmest room of the house. Glad to know that there are other people who will help the birds. :)
Looks like a golden crowned kinglet. They’re so cute! Window strikes are often deadly, so this little one is definitely lucky you were able to nurse it back to health and release it!
What a sweet and thoughtful little story. Thank you for saving the dear little thing. Now it knows that if he/she ever needs help again he/she knows where to get it. Bravo! That noise your cat made on seeing the bird is a normal feline response. My Siamese used to do it all the time when she saw birds in her territory. ❤🦘
Oh how I love stories like this!! Had a similar experience myself, several years ago, with 3 baby birds. There is no greater heart-warming, than to see our little rescued wards, happily fly home!
I can’t get over how cute those baby birds are opening their mouths at the very end. I just had to keep rewinding and watching it over again. Oh, so cute!!🐦
That sound your cat made is unique to when cats see a bird. It’s an instinct for hunting as it tricks birds into thinking a chick is calling them. But your cat is so calm; she’s probably doing it of instinct rather than habit. Didn’t seem like she was hunting. What you did for that bird is exemplary.
You can buy special stickers which you put on the outside of your windows to break up the reflection. The reason birds crash into windows is that they see the reflection of sky and trees and think they're flying into open space. Before I got my stickers (bird stickers from amazon), two birds crashed and were lying stunned on the ground. Both times, I picked the bird up (their beaks were open and their eyes closed but they could cling on to my hand) and after ten or fifteen minutes they regained their senses and flew off into a tree.
That is amazing. Thank you for loving and saving wildlife, as I do. A gorgeous little bird and I am so relieved that the cat did not get it and it flew off happily.
Last year I ran over a rabbit with my car. It was almost dead. I took it home, put it in a box after giving it some water and let it rest. The next day it was fortunately fully healed and I could let it go back into the wild after some nice cuddling. I will miss Miss Bunny 😍
What an absolute treat! You don't see Goldcrests everyday. You have lots of coniferous trees in your garden and that's the habitat they like. I'm very jealous of your lovely encounter.
It is so smile-causing to watch that cat voicing his incatations to the bird: he had seemed to sympathize the weak bird on the balcony, but once the bird occupied his room, he seemed to have more feelings than just compassion. God bless all the people with compassion and mercy to the weak!
Giving birds water directly to their beaks can be very dangerous for them because of how their breathing system works. They can drown from being fed manually. I'm glad birdie was ok and made a full recovery after their encounter with the window 🙂
It often happens that birds hit windows and are knocked out or just sitting there, panting. The best thing is to just let them be, if it is cold weather/snow you can pick it up and keep them warm in your hands, but cover them in your cupped hands, so that they are in the dark, that keeps them calmer, because they easily stressed seeing you, being dizzy and not being able to move.
@@ropi8739 Or an even easier solution: curtains. Could be a bit easier, but it takes away the whole thing with having windows - constantly curtained windows, leaving your rooms dark. Walls and no windows is another option.
I recently removed the bird-stickers from the windows and let some curtains open, and already feel a better human being as well after some survivors. 🙂
3:57 I have 2 cats and they are very tempted by the birds by their nature. I call this sound that cats make "song of the death". One final song for their preys.
This happened to us with a Kingfisher bird that hit our patio doors as we backed onto the river Welland. I picked it up as it was stunned, took it inside and let it rest on a towel on my knee giving it a drink now and then. I had it for about 3 hours like this, then it suddenly perked up, and after about another 20 minutes I took it outside and placed it on a tree branch overhanging the river, it sat there a bit and then dropped into the water and got a small fish. That was one of those special times I will never forget.
I absolutely love how despite the fact that Kukie ia a domesticated cat but yet can't fight her hunting instincts. It's so fascinating that somehow, something will trigger their preying instincts.. Gotta love mother nature.. 😍
I love the cut from the bird high up on a shelf to slowly releasing it! It misses out all the "GET A LADDER, NO ITS OFF AGAIN, ITS BEHIND THE BOOKCASE! COME HERE WE ARE TRYING TO RELEASE YOU😂" Wouldn't be surprised if it visits you again, great kindness for a beautiful bird.
Well done, thank you!! They live on a delicate balance between survival and death. You did the right thing. In my own nurturing sessions of the same circumstance, I just shelter the afflicted bird outside, but in my loosely closed hands, like a little cave until their strength returns. They generally fly-off in good shape in about 15 minutes. The key is to protect them from the ambient temperature and any precipitation. Until they recover their senses from the concussion, they usually don't try to flee. The real threat to them during that time, is actually hypothermia.
Thank god you helped the little birds out, it could have died and it also looked like it was is so much pain, Tysm for helping the birds out and being kind!!! ❤
Humanity in aiding helpless animals at its best as demonstrated brilliantly by the narration, sequential editing of the visuals to tell the story and the music. Kudos.
Great to view such kindness! I feed the birds like most garners/home owners do, I also feed the exhausted bee's with water and honey, nature has it's job too do, so a little bit of human help will go a long way!
That chittering is what my two cats do only when they see birds through the window. They don't make that sound for anything else. What an uplifting and educational video! Thank you!
I am amazed that you have never heard Cookie make a hunting "chitter" before. Obviously Stefan is not food as far as Cookie is concerned. But yes, that sound means the murder instincts are going hard, and a pounce is not far off.
A little tip for those with glass doors: there's glass stickers you can buy to place on your doors to lesson the chance of a bird crashing into your doors. If you can't find these stickers anywhere, bright sticky notes also work really well! We have a glass door and have had a bird hit the door before (but thankfully was ok!) and afterwards we put sticky notes on the door. We haven't had a bird crash since
My cat made those sounds all the time looking outside at birds. It's like a expression of excitement of seeying prey, since they never do it whilst actually hunting. In hunting mode they go into full stealth mode. Cats are amazing!
Most birds run into windows because they can see through the section of the home to the outdoors through the opposing windows. Closing the blinds or curtains on the other opening will reduce the incidence of this happening. I’m glad you helped this bird. Many times they die from the impact.
