Because that was her first love, I mean yeah Bonnie was her best friend and I never understood why she would attack both yet never had her humanity off by Bonnie, but clearly Matt was her first one, but Matt was close to her and put some sense into her before his "death", then when Damon snapped his neck maybe she actually realized how thoughtfulness she was, as her humanity was off, Elena was clearly using Matt as a blood use. But Matt was the only one that could do something so thoughtful and kind to Elena because he cares, and through all, he died so many times maybe that brought back Elena's memories and it's turned it off. But I don't really know it's just my, well I think happened.

i think elena was so protective of Matt‘s life because he’s the only one that’s human, meaning he’s the only one that can actually escape this. He still had a chance at a normal life that none of the rest of them got. I think elena held a lot of value in that because that’s all she ever wanted. He was her tie to humanity even as a regular vampire so I definitely don’t take it as Bonnie being more important than him to her
