No Irish Need Apply performed by Alan Lomax, Chet Washington, Odetta Gordon, Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, Steve Stanne & Tommy Makem. Uploaded for a study of the working class immigrants of Ireland!
“He was reading the tribune” the New York tribune was a fiercely republican newspaper during the civil war, it supported the war, abolition and nativist sentiments and widely scorned by the Irish catholic democrats. Nice bit of history and detail in such a short line.
El Bodoque,in the 1847 American Mexico war the Saint Patrick's brigade went over to the Mexicans. They were great soldiers who had fought with distinction in the European wars, for and against Napoleon's army, etc. The US officers didnt like the Irish, because the Irish knew more about warfare than them. The Irish deserted and went over to their co religionists .They were good with cannon.
My wife and I are very proud of our Irish heritage. My wife's maiden name is McLaughlin. She is second-generation Irish and can get a dual citizenship if she wanted to. We love listening to Celtic music such as Celtic Woman and Celtic Thunder. I so want to take my wife to Ireland one day so we can look up her Irish family tree. I want to look up mine as well.
My great, great grandmother came from Clare in the 1840’s. She was a seamstress. She married an Irish cop a few days after getting here. They spent a year in NYC then moved to Detroit.
Ummmm Black Irish refers not to the SKIN COLOR of the irishman, but the HAIR Color. Black Irish have Jet Black hair, which is generally fairly curly. But their skin is as white as any Irish... Black Irish do have more melonin production so they burn less, and can become very dark in summer.
That's cool! My great-great-great-grandfather, Patrick G. Coughlan, came from a farming community in King's County (now County Offaly) to New York City (also during the famine) and changed his name to Conklin. He couldn't find any work so he moved to Michigan, built a church, cleared some land to farm, and we still live here today. (Jack Bing is not my real name...totally un-Irish...just a pseudonym.)
@@richsackett3423When many Irish and Scottish came they were leaving a war torn country overtaken by England and entering to America in war times here. There was no refuge....they had to come and labor and fight in war. No happy welcome package.
@@sunshinenday3439 Hope you don't discount genuine challenges still faced, even if there's more help possible. Nativist sentiments might change topics, but it persists.
I didn't know this ever happened. Where would these signs appear? Not in Ireland I hope?!?! This kind of racism seems so ridiculous to me!!!! Doesn't everyone know by now that there are good hardworking and bad lazy people in every country (and most individuals are both at various times!) Make the opportunity to get to know people from different places, and you see that an outlook which accepts racism is uneducated, incorrect and truly a distraction from real problems and their solutions.
wow, I am of Irish, Italian and German ancestory. My pop was Irish/Italian, His Italian side would of punched the guy who put that sign up in a second.
Belfast. My family had money, but during the famine they were still starving. Then they get to come to America to see those signs and still starve. Then they get to fight in the Civil War and spend time in Andersonville for their trouble.
@@brasibrad3011 There's a big difference between being exclusive and being inclusive. Discrimination against Irish would be exclusive. Opening Ireland up to more immigration would be inclusive.
Black people talk about their opression all the time, but if i bring up the opression of european people in america like the irish or italians, everyones up and arms, heaven forbid i talk about the hardships my people face while you drone on about the ones your own people faced...
Buzzclick-another job that you would have loved...being on the admissions committee of certain medical schools. When I applied in 1951, Cornell accepted 0 Jews, same with Rochester, Columbia took 2, and that was the scene in schools all over the country. There were about 4 schools worth applying to. Many went to Scotland, Switzerland at that time.
Nowadays the Irish seem to have become anyone not presently holding a full time position, nor a student who understandably lacks years of full time experience (paid, anyway - even an internship not so useful) in a given position. In the end we are all Irish, I suppose.
I am not as much Irish as i am Scottish, but i do embrace the small percentage i am Irish. I am also jewish-decent. All these “minorities” are so beautiful and there is so much need to be culturally diverse otherwise we’d all be the same.
Eatlifeyum, those signs were in America. Our ancestors left Ireland during the famine, just to be met with predjudice like that. I still don't know how my great-great grandparents fed their children.
I referred to the 7 cardinal/deadly sins, and discussed the issue with Father Cleary of St. Patrick's as I mentioned...then added ignorance and hatred to make a possible 9. One has to know when to seek consultation...whether in Medicine or in life.
@@ndowg the Jews do it to themselves. They'd rather be enslaved then fight back like Yahweh told them. Or follow the Maccabees, who is not a Jewish hero. Israel exists, they go there but don't stay and cry anti semitism. Happy day 6 of Hanukkah. Maccabee wackin hellenized Jews.
Thou shall not take the Lord's name in vain. Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, Bernard Shaw, Sean O'Casey, Yeats were brilliant. Thomas Moore, Balfe + Wallace were brilliant composers. The Irish are BRIGHT enough, but as a new people, unlike the Chinese, Japanese, Italians, French + Jews... they need a redirection of goals + some seasoning.....and then we will have more John Fitzgerald and Teddy Kennedys. Study, and the ability to work toward distant goals is needed. Hate saps strength and ambition
Buzzclic500- I am " as cool as a cucumber". The common language that I have scrupulously avoided using, in my corresponding with you you can imagine.......imagine the worst.
To Bussclick500- Years ago there was a vaudeville act; when one person made claims that were difficult to substantiate, the other would say "vass you dair Charley". In regard to Jesus and events, Buzzclick....."vass you dair Charley"?
Sadly, the Irish weren't terribly welcoming to outsiders either. When blacks starting moving into Irish neighborhoods, the Irish responded with mass rioting. You'd think shared experience would breed empathy, but I guess not.
It did breed empathy, I'm sorry but your statement is mostly incorrect. In most of America, Irish and black communities mingled very well in dark times.
Why do some people think that they were they only people made to suffer just because there skin color was different or had a different religion. Hate to inform u it’s probably what we “All” have in commom
How do you keep a member of the trinity out of heaven? The God of the Old Testament was periodically angry-with Jews, Egyptians, etc. Anger, and all of the other 7-9 deadly sins don't theoretically preclude heaven-if there is a heaven- but rather the total life of the person being judged....I would think. I personally believe that we make a heaven or hell for ourselves ...while we live, according to our good and/or bad deeds. Our fellow men provide a heaven or hell for us as we deserve.
My family arrived in 1880, 1903. My grand uncle won The Navy Cross in 1918. My father's cousin volunteered for WW1, died of influenza. My first cousin, an Amy Air Force photographer died over Kunming China-Air Medal. My father's brother was the youngest Lt. Colonel in Infantry-1st US Army. I served 3 years USN Medical Corps, discharged Lt. Commander. Aside from hating Jews, buzzclick 500, what have you or your family contributed? How many lives have You saved with your 2 hands? All above -Jews.
You are accepting gospel, I read what the most important +most scientific historians write...people who have spent their entire lives in study. Michael Grant used his extensive collection of authentic ancient coins to establish dates. In tracing some of the facts about the Jewish-Roman Wars, + independent Jewish states of the era, they produced coins to commemorate military victories, new emperors + Kings, the face of Cleopatra is on one . Coins with dates are more precise than oral tradition
Are you a former Jew who been "born again"? It is difficult for me to believe that you are a member of any particular religion. I don't mean to pry into personal matters, but it is an interesting question.
Buzzclick- Of the 7 cardinal/capital sins you clearly show pride and anger. Envy is almost certain. Some years ago I asked Reverend Cleary of St. Patrick's Cathedral whether ignorance and hatred might be dded to make a total of 9. He thought that was reasonable. I believe you have those in spades. You are giving Anti-Semitism a bad name with your pride, anger, envy, ignorance and hatred. If you go to confession, why not review those carefully with a good, dependable, intelligent priest.
A Black guy: *Walks in to apply* Guy Hiring: Your kind ain't welcome here. And you ain't getting this job Irish Guy: *Walks in* Irish guy: Ok so I might have a chance Guy Hiring: So you're here for the job right Irish Guy: Yes sir I... Guy Hiring: Can't you fucking Patties read
Just to clarify matters, I would classify you as a Jew Hater rather than an Anti-Semite because the Arabs are Semites too. Mark Twain wrote that the greatest reason for Jew hating is envy. How do you feel when Nobel Prizes in Chemistry, Physics, Medicine+Physiology, Economics and Literature are awarded to Jews? Those committees are made up of Swedish Protestants....to choose Nobel Prize recipients. Do you feel hatred, envy or both?
The Irish are wonderful people where it comes to music, poetry and literature, but they really know how to hate...The English, The Italians, The Blacks and The Jews, Latinos, and others, including the Northern Irish Protestants. And the people that play the 4 stringed banjo don't like people who play the 5 stringed banjo... with the exception of Tommy Makem. But they did produce Oscar Wilde, Joyce, Shaw, Yeats, Balfe, Wallace + Guinness, both Alec and beer. Irish Irish were pro-German in WW-1..
To Buzzclick500-You have succeeded in arousing my sympathy. You could have been a member of Hitler's SS, or the Gestapo if circumstances had been otherwise. Without knowing your race, national roots, religion or gender or age or educational attainment, I believe that Reinhold Niebuhr would have included you among his CHILDREN OF DARKNESS. I hope that find peace, and that the Almighty shows you the light sometime before you die. I have nothing more to say to you. Goodbye and goodluck
Then Hitler was not anti-semitic? What would you call him? The problem with confessing your shortcomings directly to Jesus Christ is twofold- does he answer you? He only spoke Aramaic and some Latin most probably. The other problem is that you have to understand and recognize your shortcomings prior to talking with Jesus Christ; it appears that you believe that you have no shortcomings. It doesn't sound too workable to me.
You mention Jewish acquaintances, but no Jewish friends. What if you have no SOUL? You still have not mentioned what you or your family have contributed to US society; can you justify your existence? Please do so. Incidentally, there are numerous Jewish Nobel Laureates in every category, but precious few or no Irish in any category. But I do love (John) Hal Roach, The Clancy Brothers, and Oscar Wilde, Guinness and Bushmills and particularly John McCormack singing Irish and opera....from Athlone
Buzzlick500- Since you are steeped in and wedded to religious dogma, there is nothing to be accomplished with further discussion. Should you mind ever open you have my references. The bible may be inspired by God, but all of it-Old and New Testament was written by fallible men.
