ALL INSTRUMENTATION

Yes, Floyd did instrumentals. 'The Great Gig in the Sky' is technically instrumental (not counting the sampled lines) since Clare Torry used her voice as another instrument. 'Any Colour You Like' is my favourite & there's the Live in Brighton version on YT somewhere, very, very good.

On the studio version near the middle portion of the song during that low point you can hear a voice say the words in the title (One of These Days I'm Going to Cut You Into Little Pieces) --that voice was Drummer Nick Mason. So those were the only lyrics spoken in the song. They shaved the title down to "One of These Days" for obvious reasons in the early 70's.

Dave Gilmour is playing a Jedson lap steel guitar. He uses the same lap steel for "High Hopes". This is off of their "Division Bell" (album) tour that was then released later as a live album and DVD. The album was called "P.U.L.S.E." The performances were filmed over a number of nights in October 1994 at Earls Court in London. The pigs are from the "Animals" album. More particularly the songs "Pigs On The Wing" Parts 1 & 2. For the album cover of their "Animals"" album the band used the Battersea Power Station as a backdrop, they had a large inflatable pig tethered over the power station. The pig represents the crap people are subject to and that a little human empathy for one another can make the world a better place. Specifically this song is aimed at a radio DJ named Jimmy Young who the band disliked because he babbled on too much. In the early 70s their concerts featuring this song would have recordings of Jimmy Young's voice cut up into a collage of nonsense. They essentially cut him into little pieces. The words to the song are spoken by the drummer Nick Mason. "One of these days, I'm going to cut you into little pieces."

I was there on the night after this recording, amazing concert. You were asking about the setup organisation for this world tour - the set took so long to put together they had three complete sets requiring over 50 articulated trucks and over 160 crew. The setups leap-frogged each other with one in use, another being setup at the next venue and the third travelling to the venue after that. In this way it visited 68 cities and cost almost $30million to stage but grossed 5 times that. It was the final tour by PF.

David’s playing an instrument called a pedal steel or lap steel guitar. It’s interesting how many people are unfamiliar with it - it’s a fairly common instrument in country music, and is a sound that’s heard in a lot of kinds of popular music.

The PULSE performance recorded for video here was at Earl’s Court in London, an incredibly massive indoor stadium that I’ve heard is unfortunately no longer with us. Another anecdote: apparently, the dates at Earl’s Court were the only indoor performances on the entire international tour. It was the only indoor location large enough to work for this production. Now that’s saying something about just how massive this show was. 😳

Pulse was a tour, not just a single show, although I think this was in london. It was in an arena when it came to town here. They were talking on the news about how the lighting crew and air traffic control at the airport had to coordinate with each other. At times, there were just too many bright flashes and lights to randomly have planes near by or taking off/landing.

The guitar David Gilmour plays is called a Lap Steel Guitar; it's played that way because unlike a regular guitar there are no frets to play your fingers over, a steel bar is used along the neck...totally different sound from his Strat.

This has a really strong Doctor Who vibe. They were fans of the classic BBC sci-fi series. The steel guitar is a variation on the traditional guitar. Its design and the method in which it's played gives it a different sound, which enhances the emotional undercurrent of the song. Steel guitars are commonly used in country music, especially in "crying" songs. The unique sound seems to mimic the sound of crying.

If you listen carefully, Richard Wright slips in a bar from the Dr Who theme. The album version sounds 'who-sh' too, but is different notes. Dr Who returned the favour in the Capaldi episode 'The Caretaker' where the Doctor clearly whistles 'We don't need no education' in one scene.

***FOR ALL THE GOOD INFO : Check "The Division Bell Tour" wikipedia page and go down to the "history" section , it tells about it!!. From what i remember, in America over 700 tons of equipment hauled by 53 semi trucks, it had the same stage but larger, it was a stadium tour , the stage was 180 feet wide by 80 feet tall, over 300 speaker cabinets, the large circle in the middle is 30 feet in diameter, also planes were not allowed to fly within about 5 to 10 miles because of the lasers

When you use a bottle neck to slide on your strings on a regular guitar the frets can make a little skipping noise at each fret. It isn’t a smooth slide. On a lap steel guitar there is no interference from the frets so he can slide smoothly with no skipping sound. As for stage show, you’ve got to remember that none of this tech existed in 94. Pulse is the album name for the Division Bell tour. The concert was filmed in London UK at Earl’s Court arena.

The drummer and bassist in the version of One of These Days you just watched were Nick Mason* and Guy Pratt (who is also the late Rick Wright's son-in-law). Both are in the band Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets, which focuses on playing Pink Floyd tracks from before 1973's Dark Side of the Moon. They are due to release - in the next few weeks - a live CD/DVD of their tour from a couple of years ago. Included on that album is a version of One of These Days and this has been posted to RU-vid (by the band): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ab8cP26wjU4.html ... well worth checking out! * Nick Mason is the only member of the band who has played on every Pink Floyd album.

Part of the Floyd's appeal is in the etheral abstractness. To me the intimate expression of this is Echoes. Got to have a listen but long. Same album, Meddle, that One of These Days came from. Early live version from Pompei in the 70's with very young Gilmore. Prefer studio version myself. Once you open the door to Floyd, you will never be the same.

I saw this tour on the last night at old Foxboroough Stadium in MA. I remember their performance of this song there as better than it was at this show, though that's likely subjective. This recording of One of These Days is not terrible, but I just don't think they caught how intense this song is that night. You should listen to the studio version from the album to see what I mean.

David Gilmore plays a lap steel guitar (search it) as masterfully as he does a Fender Strat (or most any other kind of guitar), which he used in many of the PF recordings. It is also used extensively in "Country and Western" styles. The pigs represent corrupt politicians and dictators of the era (late 1960's and early 1970's when the song was originally recorded). The only lyrics (which you "walked on" in your commentary) are "One of these days, I'm going to cut you into little pieces." Which is what is done when preparing pork for consumption. The original recording sounded like crap to me, so I was delighted and surprised when I first saw this performance on VHS tape 25 years ago. Now it's well "digitized" and enhanced to look and sound really good. The "spacey", "artsy", "Avant Garde", "psychedelic" style was a thing when the band was young. David Gilmore once say that until DSOTM was recorded, they were just "knoodling about" with weird and new sounds.

another suggestion is if you don't know the history, pink floyd had a splintering with Roger waters many moons ago, and its messy and full of legal entanglements, but to make a long story short, both the band and Roger Waters have rights to play theWall album, and after the Berlin wall fell, Roger did an EPIC EPIC EPIC performance of the Wall at the general location of the Berlin wall. it's large, beautiful, chalk full of guest singers to do the David Gilmour parts, and the whole album and in this case concert is a story, so in a sense, it's an opera. here is a link ru-vid.com/group/PLF360TpwNrGe0KHgG_iTvUVS5UQEABs6_

Its a lap steel guitar, and its easier to play with the sliding bridge tool he is using, and listen to that awesome sound. The same type of instrument is also that sad sounding twang in country music.

You paused at exactly the wrong moment... You missed the 10 words that are the entire lyrics... I barely caught them and I have played this song so much that I can close my eyes and hear the song in my head... I believe it was at Prince Albert Hall in London, if not it was at Wimbley Stadium in London...
