They did show clips of the nominated films when it aired. I remember because of Lagaan (it was a clip of the song Ore Chori w/ Aamir Khan and Gauri singing on top of a hay stack) and how pleasently surprised I was to see a foreign musical -b4 I knew what Bollywood was ! :-)
@K Hate??? Indian cinema isn't just Bollywood/Hindi film industry, there are many regional film industries which more frequently won National awards and are screened at International Film Festivals...
3:10 Salute to Aamir and Ashutosh for straightaway standing after the winner is announced.... Every film in the nominations list was fantastic! So virtually everyone is the winner!
I don’t think it was in salute…I think they were both so overwhelmed with emotion they got up…they were dreaming about this Oscar …watch Making of Lagan documentary you can see
Funfact - They didn't give Oscar to amir Khan's Lagaan in 2002 but 15 years later in 2017 they asked him to became a jury member and vote for academy awards
Oscar is not won , it is given ..Everybody and every movie that gets nominated is already a winner ..Thats why they say "AND THE OSCAR GOES TO" and not "OSCAR IS WON BY" ..Ever nomination is a winner ..
Sharon was still recovering from her devastating brain seizure, only walking again a couple weeks before this night. She suggested dancing with Travolta to push herself to the next stage of recovery. So when you see her dance out on stage and speak, just remember she was crawling back to clarity and health. Amazing woman.
I'm here from reading Sharon Stones new memoir. Wow she really pulled this off amazingly well. She had just suffered a stroke and was having a very hard recovery.
As a Bosniak. I am proud to see No Man’s Land win. It is an personally important film for our people. Not only is it a phenomenal film, not only did it say everything it had to say about our war. But also generally, Films from the Balkans are generally not recognised around the world. To see one a film from my country be represented on the world stage makes me proud 🇧🇦🇧🇦🇧🇦🇧🇦🇧🇦🇧🇦
Amelie and Lagaan are the more enjoyable movies, but No Man's Land is the more important movie, about the '90s Bosnian Muslim genocide, which is still relevant to this day. While I would've preferred Lagaan to win, No Man's Land is a deserving winner. 2001 was a very competitive year for the foreign film category, with Amelie, Lagaan and No Man's Land all deserving of the award.
+Razor Edge - That´s the problem with the Oscars. Very often it´s about "which movie is important". But this being a movie award, shouldn´t the award be given to the best movie? The Oscars is so often about "who deserved it this year" - which actor is "overdue" - like when Leonardo DiCaprio won it for "The Revenant".
Those who go on and on about Lagaan or Amelie have probably never seen No Man's Land. It is a masterpiece in movie making coming from a small poor country not usually known for moviemaking. Give it the credit it deserves!..
This was when Sharon stone was 44. At the time , little did people know that two weeks prior she had a stroke, almost dying. What a recovery. And what a beautiful, intelligent wonderful personality she showed on the night and very brave indeed and such grace and poise. Those two husbands she divorced are not really worthy of her. She is a beautiful legend and still is today. A princess.
Near the end of the video, there was Kevin Spacey's introduction to the In Memoriam segment and then he asked everyone to stand up for a moment of silence for the September 11th victims. I remember that moment. Gave me chills and it was powerful. Still is to this day.
Ah those good old days when the Best Foreign Language Film used to have great upsets. For at least a decade now there are no surprises in this category, there's always a clear frontrunner and it always takes the win.
@@deepakrg8379 yeah I am... Re: "Take your breath away" means extremely beautiful or surprising. I think you wanted to be funny or wanted a give the cold shoulder. Get well soon.
Lagaan was a fabulous film but it was too long and overdramatic. Did Gracy Singh have to smile every second like a clown? Indians do not act natural in films, maybe because real life is so harsh they are melodramatic in films?
@nitin pandey human behaviors and expressions are exaggerated in Bollywood..Gracy Singh smiles like a clown, a 18th century village woman wouldn’t smile like a mad person every 5 seconds…stunts are exaggerated in Pushpa. But generally taking in 30-40 years of cinema, South Indian are more natural acting.
+-TheFillion- excuse u bitch watch ur words before calling our films 'shit'. I guess u don't know much about the film 'lagaan' and u just commented here using a bad word cuz u felt like it. The story of Lagaan was based upon a true story bitch and if u would have watched it, u would have seen it at last of the movie saying it was based on a true story on the character that Aamir Khan was playing. Next time, research before abusing on something or someone.
***** shut the fuck up lagaan is epic film ....every top 100 list ..lagaan is there ...but no mans land is nowhere ..............and fyi no mans land winning was fix ...not in just oscar .. in every award ceremony ...
great bunch of movies!! I guess everyone was expecting Amélie, but No Man's Land is a very good movie (and my personal vote would have gone to the astonishing Lagaan)
I presume most of the people here talking about Lagaan deserving an Oscar hasn't even watched the other movies like No man's land and Amelie. They blindy supports Lagaan and shout about it losing the Oscar simply because it being an Indian movie and they're from India. I'm from India and I loved Lagaan. But having watched the other movies I believe No man's land deserved it that year.
@@AP-xb4tv true. But reading all the mindless comments blindly supporting this particular movie. Don't you think people have a tendency to blindly support and defend something when it comes to something of their community/nationality?
@@Pranavpanoor That's everyone, actually. Lotta Bosniaks preferring No Man's Land not having watched Lagaan at all. And I, personally, did find Lagaan better. We can't just cancel out opinions like that.
@@AP-xb4tv alright. But being watched both movies I thought No Man's land was deserving. I'm from India and that was my unbiased opinion unlike most of the comments here. But yeah I get what you're saying. let's just agree to disagree :)
@@richardsmith3273 ya, everybody wants their country to win, there are Norwegians recommending Elllie and others recommending Amelia its not so out of the world to root for sumthing
Okay agree that is your opinion. But let me ask you this, did you watched No man's land and Amelie before you made this opinion? Because most of the people here talks about lagaan deserving it only because they've watched only Lagaan. If they've watched the other movies, it would be clear that No man's land deserved it that year.
First Whoopi Goldberg stalls for time as they scramble to find Travolta, who THEN waltzes onto the stage with Sharon Stone. Then Travolta giggles at Foreign Films Film because he realises he is going to have to say difficult foreign names. Then a film portraying the brutality and destructiveness of people honoured at Oscars. Then Kevin Spacey walks on......... What a roller coaster of emotions.
nice joke , the nominees of the best picture of that year itself was -- a beautiful mind and lord of the rings , which is still considered to be greatest movies and beautiful mind won that
He doesn't attend shitty award shows like Filmfare Panwala Patanjali Fair&Lovely beautycream vivoS10plusmax64GB most weight lost award. He I think attended a show for best director for Taare Zameen Par in another award function recently, but it wasn't some cringy award show where they dance and stuff
These poor Gora’s wondering why one Oscar RU-vid video is full of Lagaan commenters wishing things went different 🤣🤣. If this 3 hour albeit lovely film is all we can produce from India then we need to work harder. It was a good film but it dragged on and on. Westerners hate long movies
