In this video I install a AFR gauge in the original gauge cluster of the K10 pickup . I love the way it takes the guess work out of tuning . Always better to have the information than not.

You might want to try a product called "Plexus" to clean and restore the plastic. Plexus was originally developed to keep aircraft windshields and side windows looking fresh and new. Plexus is actually a wax that penetrates into any pores that might be in the plastic surface and fill small scratches to restore plastic surfaces. I use it on my motorcycle windshields and it keeps them in a like new condition. All of the small scratches that make windshields look hazy are gone. In your case, the life expectancy would be very long (maybe a year or more) since there is no exposure to the elements.

Plexus is a fantastic product.

I agree. If Keenan Tatro of Tatro Machine recommends, it has to be good👍
@mattmanyam

I should add that one of the biggest benefits of using Plexus to restore an item like that, is that it dissipates the static that builds up on the item, causing them to require constant cleaning (often with aggressive cleansers, that contribute to the haziness of the item.

If it were me, I would have done just fine with the instruments and then crawl under the truck, get all turned around and weld the bung onto the drive shaft. There's a bunch of things I can no longer do and chew gum at the same time. That list is growing. Nice job, Steve.

Great idea Steve. A couple of suggestions though. When I cleaned up the cab of my recently purchased 2000 Ford Ranger “in a basket” I also cleaned the instrument cluster. In the trans gear indicator window I used a label maker to name the truck “ Judy’s truck “. I also used headlight polish to polish the instrument cluster lens. Made it look much nicer.

Nice job Steve. Just remember that 12.5:1 is a full load a/f ratio. 14.7:1 gives best emissions, and 15.5:1 is for fuel economy. Lean on cruise, within reason, is what you are trying to achieve. Some of the later efi stuff is much leaner than that when in lean cruise mode. As you load the motor up, and it goes lean, then you adjust the power valve circuit add the extra fuel. Changing the power valve brings the circuit in sooner or later, as required. Jet changes are easy, which is why we do them the most, but we do tend to do them to cover other issues. Often because we don't know any better. Properly setting up a carby can send you miles down a rabbit hole... regards Greg

I was shocked, just shocked I tell you that when you were plastic welding that you neglected to apply any plastic flux to make for better joints. I now have to go and take some Prozac to bring my equilibrium back to normal. You could have alleviated my apprehension Steve if you had just applied some plastic welding flux. I hope you sleep well to night after you egregious omission. 😁 ( _10 minute later_ ) WOW.....cool man.......😎........rock on. 🤙 *Thank You* for the video Steve. That seems like a much better system than the EGT gauges we had in our piston engine aircraft that we leaned to 50° lean of peak if I remember correctly.

The "affordable" Sniper system is around $1500 at Summit. Very nice setup and a problem solver in a lot of cases. Steve's situation is different. He has a new carb and engine. It is running quite well. He is comfortable with carburetor operation and adjustment. A well maintained carbureted system will work perfectly and save him quite a few bucks!

Our modern FADEC systems in autos can be really good depending on what they are tuned for. Lean cruise is great and is why my '07 Ford V6 gets 28 MPG on the highway with cruise on. What we wouldn't all give for that kind of data in a carbureted old school system now. Wait, 200 bucks? SOLD!!!!!

They do sell a good non-welding bung installation kit. Or your local muffler shop can install one if you don’t weld. It’s really a great tool for old school carb setups. I would still go with one of the EFI kits if I was going to all the trouble of rebuilding my engine. Holley makes it too easy for not a lot of money in the big scheme of things. But if your restoration demands sticking with a carburetor, a gauge like this really is a big bonus for drivability, economy, and maintaining your car or truck. Thanks for showing us your install!

a few decades ago I did a voltage divider with a LED bar for the indicator and a one wire sender. Pretty inexpensive to do that way and you don't really need a heated sender for this application. I won't go into setting the bits up because it has been well covered below. Once the bits are set up then the value of having it in the dash kind of goes away. I made mine easy to remove.

Nice job on that install! I use WB02 a lot. Only tips I can offer is to basically ignore the WB at idle speeds if you have a cam with some overlap as the exhaust will draw in fresh air at low engine speeds. For idle use vacuum and rpm to dial AFR and WB02 over 1500rpm or so.

Using the air fuel ratio gauge. Bring up engine speed to around 1700 rpm. This should be just below the speed the primary boosters start to trickle. If you are lean. Increase the idle feed restrictions by 0.001" test again. To test the primary air fuel ratio. Bring the rpms up to 3500 to 3700 rpms. Is it lean or rich. Change the primary jets and retest. After you get the primary air fuel ratio set. The secondary air fuel ratio is checked during hard acceleration but you need to not go to wide open throttle as you have to observe the air fuel ratio with close to wide open throttle manifold vacuum above the power valve opening pressure. So the power valve is not enriching the overall air fuel ratio.
