It’s always been westernized or inspired by the west….kpop was founded off the sounds and images of western artists and they took that and made their “own” sound but the west played a big part in this genre. which many top CEOs and senior artists will say the same thing and have before….tell me you listen to kpop but know nothing about kpop.

@@SBBunny93but kpop still contained Korean lyrics so if its full English then they're wont really be an difference between kpop and pop. Why don't they try and stick to their culture like as an international fan I like Korean music kpop not POP.
@multistan9582
@multistan9582 6 месяцев назад
@zodiacsign2895 who are you talking should stick to their culture?? Wasn't Kpop the one that is derived and inspired from another culture??? The thing is to sustain Kpop industry it needs to be marked outside of S.kKorea, as let me tell you only fandoms in S.Korea mostly listens kpop, not really the general public....so you want Kpop to be marketed in China....ohh our idols can't perform in the country, unless they literally are promoting there as a cop idol singing in Chinese.....also in Japan....are free to perform there....but ohhhh.....the also need to have multiple versions of their songs with Japanese lyrics to appeal to the public.....so in the US....why is it weird that the groups are adding more English languge to perform there???.....as more people are likely to catch on and relate to such songs, outside the fandom....same situation will be done as companies also have eyes on S. American market...the fact is Kpop has become more global and changes will be made to attract, or adapt to a certain audience preference...music is always changing...if not...we now would be rocking to jazz and blues from the 50s....

@@multistan9582 Yes but my point is that if Korean music became English only then that would really impact many fans like me. I know from the start that kpop was mixed with Western music but if it now interly changes then that would be an issue.

As a casual fan of Kpop music, the category has opened my life to Korean culture and the language, so I HOPE it doesn't lose its identity. Unlike Latin music, which share an equal notoriety (and sometimes a great unappreciation due to language barriers), have already originated within North America and has its own lifestyle. Korea is the next breakthrough country (defeating the likes of any powerhouse Asian/Eastern influence) of widespread, international phenomenon through its art and music. So again, I really HOPE they DON'T lose their meaning of origin.

As a fan of HYBE artists, I disagree with what Bang PD said about K-pop. The name "K-pop" was chosen for a reason - it's music that is distinctly Korean and has its own unique style. Even RM wouldn't agree to taking away the individuality of K-pop by removing the 'K' or making songs completely in English. Of course, there have been times when K-pop has been westernized, but this shouldn't be taken as an invitation to erase its distinctiveness altogether.

What they don’t understand is that what makes k-pop so appealing to international audiences is PRECISELY the fact that it’s k-pop and not just pop. K-pop is such a refreshing break from the usual western pop we consume, and the fact that it came from a foreign country with a different culture, tradition and language made it even more appealing to so many people. I’m your average western girl that LOVES western girl groups (Flo, Little Mix, Pussycat Dolls, Destiny’s Child, etc), but I remember when I first came across a video of Twice, I was immediately drawn in by their family friendly/cutesy vibe and bubblegum pop sound. I kind of stopped getting into K-pop after around 2018-2019. Things started becoming cookie cutter to me. I only came back to it 7 months ago because of Kai's cover of Rover song. Then I started getting into EXO and their live performance stages from 2013 and on. I have to say the difference for me was hearing the live, power vocal line, Chen, Baekhyun and especially for me D.O. I've never heard raw power with such soul RnB in K-pop before? I know I'm really late to the party and I have like 11+ years of EXO content to catch up on but I've always gravitated to live, RnB vocalists. Hopefully the next generation can produce more of this type of music. Because dancing hard with fireworks and lights are all fine. But for me nothing beats an acoustic, guitar, piano with, live, power, soulful vocals to command an audience.

You say you gravitate towards R&B vocalist, well you won't find many in the K-Pop world. You would have to literally look into Korean R&B for that. There's great artists like Dean, Crush, Bumkey, G Soul, Big Naughty, Sam Kim and Zion T just to name a few. That's not counting the lady's like Hoody, Suran, Meenoi, Heize, Devita, Moon Sujin and Sumin who also hold it down.

If Bang Si Hyuk is so bothered about making K-pop universal because it's " _about the music_ ", then the places his artists go on tour should reflect that. You don't gain global recognition by "rebranding" an entire industry, you do that by ACTUALLY touring worldwide and building a good rapport with people all around the world. Sure it would be good for KPOP to reach 100% global appeal, but it is absolutely USELESS to suggest such a change when you refuse to let artists tour the other half of the globe. It was never "about the music" to the begin with, they just want money.

I always look at enlistment as like when a sports athlete gets injured and someone is pulled up to fill their spot. These groups have a chance to make an impact while the injured player is out. So it’ll be interesting to see who can thrive in that environment. And even if they get bigger concert venues, Korean concerts would still be the most boring shows. Don’t sing, don’t dance, just sit or stand there and wave their light sticks in an orderly fashion. But here’s the thing about the losing the k (or not) in kpop. No matter what they do, some people just aren’t gonna check out these groups coming out of Korea. Like yeah, sure, someone releases an album and performs a song on the today show. That song may get a boost by the inter crowd, but 99% of them won’t check out the album. Even Monsta X’s first English album that still attracts international listeners… a lot of them aren’t checking out their Korean albums. So unless they’re just gonna sing in English… keep the k in kpop and thrive in that. People like Bang PD are going to be the reason kpop dies in the west.

Bang PD aims to increase revenue by broadening global reach, potentially risking the authenticity of K-Pop. The genre's appeal lies in its clean, non-explicit lyrics and dedication showcased by artists in their music, dances, and performances. Despite this, the focus seems to shift towards financial gains, which is disheartening for fans. In the end, it appears that the primary objective is to increase their profits. Very Disappointed!

As an American multi-stan, I hope to gawd that KPop doesn't turn into western pop. Yes, I love when groups sing in English or provide a few songs that appeal to the western market, but these groups are talented artists who deserve to be loved for their own unique flavor. That's what drew me to the genre in the first place. Also, although my ults' times away because of the military are hard to get through, I don't think that being exempt from service would be the best thing for them. I understand that those who don't serve can be looked upon harshly by some of Korea's citizens who resent the favoritism. There should, however, be special accommodations for idols, who have to suffer from severe invasions of privacy and decency.

What is really needed is different concepts that is uniquely Korean. Example: what Dreamcatcher has done by infusing rock, metal into Kpop. G-Idle bringing a bit of punk rock and rare species of an all girl rock band like Rolling Quartz. We also need more talented vocal groups and not just eye candy. Also how about a massive proper music festivals like Big Day Out, Coachella or that matter Woodstock but uniquely Korean. You can even beam live online as a pay per view. Also a show to highlight self made, self formed groups, that will be interesting. Anyway dropping the K from Kpop is a bad idea and this is coming from a non Korean fan like me. Also i do not understand the language but the songs are still pleasant to listen to.

I think South Korea building an arena for concerts/events etc is a great idea. We do it all the time in America it helps bring in revenue to whatever state or city that it’s in. It also creates job opportunities as well as business opportunities. This could also open up the chance to host big sporting events such as nba, nfl, ufc, boxing, soccer etc. It could even bring more western artist to perform there when going on tour. But the most important thing is that South Korea gets more recognition and could very well boost the economy.

They don't have to Americanize their sound. Aespa "Spicy" Ive "Love Dive" & others would definitely get radio play if an English version was available. The English versions should be extra tracks on the USA release cd, not a digital download only.

They'll still have problem's getting radio air play in the USA unless their kpop company is willing to play the American game eg pay the US radio stations to play their songs. It's illegal btw but that's what happens in the US and has been widely reported on a number of time's with people being caught doing this illegal activity. Do you want you groups to be caught up in illegal activties? There are still a few independent radio stations left in parts of the US that if heavily requested might play your artist song a few times but won't amount to much. Sorry to bring the bad news.

The thing is many people are not thinking about what Bang state about removing K from Kpop....for me that isnt of the literal sense but more metaphorally...He wants Kpop to break the barriers of just ( being the niche thing that many persons say kpop is) and promote themselves to appeal to more than just fans within the music industry. ( music sounds is ever changing and many dont understand that Kpop will change also, and has being changing for awhile now. Im sure the groups now dont have the same sound as the 1st and 2nd gen....all music changes to keep up with the change of times and audiences).... What Bangs suggest, it doesnt mean everyone will have to agree..( he clearly states in past interviews he beieves in democracy)...so everyone have their own voices, are allowed to speak it and make their own suggestions and decisions. But if this route that he speaks of eventually becomes successful if its realised by Hybe....hope I dont see other fandoms bring them down, for having a more Global outreach and presents when their group's and artist are dominating International charts. He says this as many in the Industry still dont take Kpop serious as a legitimate genre and like it or not, Western validation is the most highest form of musical recognition an artist can have as thats where the money is and higest recognited musical awards are....many Kpop fans are locked in their own minds and dont understand the business aspect of it.... What they dont understand is many of their said group's are dying for such validation....If a Kpop group gets a Grammy win for example...who are bigger than their group??? Lol.....the pride that will burst...yet they claim they dont need western validation.... Kpop entity except its Language is all Western to begin with.

Fans love kpop for what it is. Pushing it to a different direction may be beneficial for some but for the whole of kpop???...it wouldn't be pop without the k. Branding it as Korean rather than just pop is essential for them to reach a wider audience and having other people appreciate what Korea and Korean is. KPop is as it is because of the labor put in by the older generation. Bang and other companies may be thinking more of bringing home the money rather than having to share the real talents of their artists. Having to disregard the welfare of their artists too such as overworking them, having multiple comebacks each year and so on will actually harm the artists rather than having to showcase their talents. INVEST in your artists. Show everyone what they got rather than having to let them sing beyond or under what they are capable of. Look at the older generations...they might have lost some members or have gone on to do solos but they are still legendary. Artists now still look up to them. Why? Because they get to see longevity in their chosen careers while having to enjoy it.

If they think changing KPOP to POP would earn them Grammys etc in the west, it won't. The music will still be identify as KPOP due to their distinct culture and identity by language. What they have to try is letting the music awards in the west recognizing that distinction and letting them have a seat at the table. You can't put kpop into a pop category with top notch artist its going to fail. You have to have a category for only kpop just like they have country music, afrobeats music etc. That should be their focus. Get the awards to notice kpop as a genre itself cause it is.

I think it's a given if the S.K music industry need to survive. There's a population and economic decline in S.K. China, K-pop 3rd biggest market has banned K-pop. If Japan, their 2nd market did the same they are in a very big trouble. The market is relatively small with all the big label only contributing to around 2% of global music sales, and there's a lot of new groups of idols popping up everywhere. The competition is getting fiercer and the market is stagnant or shrinking. Just as country pop, afro pop, indie pop and many other pop subgenre considered as pop, K-pop losing the K probably won't be a bad thing unless they lose their identity in their art styles.

But we have to admit radio play for Kpop songs especially if it is not an English song is sometimes limited , hence people like Azaelia Banks ( and she may not be the only one that feels that way) would rather not listen to music they apparently can't understand dispite music being a universal language. We also know it is about money for these companies. He doesn't own kpop but he is still a big player in it and he isn't the only company trying for western/ universal appeal for his artists. But as they say time will tell.

I just know that I'm in the U.S. and I've only recently heard a few times (less than I can count on one hand) ANY song even by BTS on public radio. Those who are at top of the charts in sales, aren't being played on U.S. radio stations much even if the songs are in all English. In grocery stores recently, I've heard Butter 2x and Permission to Dance 1x. These songs came out 2-3 years ago (approx) and are in all English, and I am just now starting to hear them occasionally. I think Bang PD is trying to break through to get radio play and recognition for that talent that exists in Korea, as K-Pop is viewed as a genre and Not as an industry that encompasses many genres and loads of talent. It's sad really how much effort has to go into that. One other comment is that there are many countries, not just the US, who really would like more English songs as that is, at the moment, the most universal language across the world. So don't be too hard on him or any artists who make songs in all English, in order to get more air time.

@@lisacu134t6y As much as Bang PD insists on dropping the "k" from kpop we are still dealing with Korea here. Notice how most Koreans don't accept HYBE as legendary as they do JYP, SM and YG; in fact many seem offended when people talk about the "big 4" because to them HYBE is nothing special--just a large company with lots of money. To be first to snag a Grammy would definitely make them legendary and would legitimize the whole "pave the way" argument without doubt. Their culture seems to value certain accomplishments more than revenue earned and BTS/Army chose the accomplishments (Grammy/Super Bowl = conquered the west). Should an artist not associated with HYBE achieve those accomplishments...well that label would instantly become legendary and celebrated in Korea while HYBE will get the pat on the back and told how they were not up to the task. This is about legacy and prestige which is the real measure of greatness in Korea.

This is the example of Bang PD being greedy for money. By doing this, it loses all of its artistic integrity and becomes songs that are boring.

Kpop has long gone western now, the music is still successful, they are Korean Artists but it doesn't matter what language they want to sing in. They should not be limited
