There are hints that NaNoWriMo may be done and I have the opportunity to develop my own plan for writing my books. See what I'm trying moving foward.
Don't forget I'm calling another bingo square at the end. If you haven't downloaded it yet, I'm gifting everyone 30 free bingo cards (drive.google.com/file/d/1yO2F...) and you can save along with me over this year.

**About Me**
Sara Marks is a mondern woman with plenty of classic problems - just like the women she writes about.
After a mid-life crisis and failing out of college at the age of twenty, Sara decided to live the life she wanted, not the one expected of her. Now a librarian with two master's degrees, she plans never to stop getting over-educated. She started writing as part of the National Novel Writing Month program nearly twenty years ago. She likes to write women who are like her: feminists who learn to live their life their way, rarely worrying about their age, weight, marriageability, or fertility. They fail and find second, third, and (sometimes) fourth chances to correct their mistakes.
Sara’s a hopeless romantic who is fiercely independent. She loves knitting and traveling in her free time. She lives with her dog Cedric Doggory. She also writes horror and fantasy books under the pen name S.R. Marks.

This past November I came to the realization that while writing 50K words in 30 days had gotten me a whole lot of first drafts, a lot of them were so messy that revision seems overwhelming. So the next first draft I write I'm going to be trying to figure out a better process for myself.

Same! I love having those first drafts, but I publish the books so it’s important that I move them forward when November is over. I think there was a big opportunity to organize something to help writers build on what they did, but that wasn’t what their team wanted to do.

Interesting to hear your ideas on the ebbs and flow of energy during the year and how it effects your writing schedule.

I've loved NaNo for ten years because it pushed me to write more than usual, even when I'm not going by the "traditional" goal. Tbh, after what happened/came out last November, it's like a switch flipped and I just don't care for the organization anymore. I have a pile of t-shirts in my closet I went from wearing every day to not wearing at all in the last six months. It's not just the issues within the organization, I'm tired of how commercialized it has become and every author influencer on RU-vid is trying to make a buck off NaNo. I haven't heard any rumors that it could be shutting down officially, but I did notice they brought old tshirt designs back for this past Camp, which seems a little bit of an indicator that they are flailing right now, and last I checked they still don't have a new Director. I'm interested to see what happens from here.

Since they were overwhelmingly getting things done on the back of volunteers, it will be interesting to see what happens. I was an ML for many years and still have friends who were doing that job but recently left because of the increasing demands put on their shoulders. I think the search is still going on for a new director, but they want someone who can navigate them through this crisis. I don't know if its possible.

I've had a few successes with chunks of first drafts via NaNoWriMo, but mostly... the time of year is always horrible, and it leaves me feeling disappointed in myself for not "winning". I do much better with self-directed writing time. Picking which months work best for you based on personal habits/energy levels/etc is a good way to go about it! I'm also a "burst" writer. I'll pen a massive amount in a short amount of time, then not write for a month or so. I wish I could write daily, but my brain and schedule don't mesh with that.

I'm a burst writer too. I can't write everyday. Trying to get as much done in a month is really good for me.

I appreciate you talking about this. I have been trying to figure out myself what I want to do without NaNoWriMo. I still want something to give me a big push of motivation like that....but I don't know what that will look like yet.

I fear that will be the struggle for most people. I don’t know if you were involved with local events, but the community was a big part of it for me. It was a good way to meet people when I was new to town. They were people just trying to write, not judge the writing of others.

@@ReleasetheWordKraken I was hoping to do local events, but the closest meetups were a couple hours away. I ended up creating my own writing group that I started last year during NaNo. It's a small group but we still meet monthly. So I'm glad for that!

Thank you i didn't know there was an issue at NaNo. I always thought November was i silly month to hold it as there is always so much going on for Christmas, Plus July for Camp. I was moving Camp to June anyway this year. I do hope there will be other communities that will develop writing challenges, as doing NaNo 3 times a year made me write. oh well need to find more motivation elsewhere. xx

I hope, for most people, they might not ever know or realize there's something wrong. They'll keep telling their stories each November. You're right, in the US especially, November is a messy month. I hope you'll share how June works for you!

@@ReleasetheWordKraken I think you are right. November is ingrained as a writing month now. I do share my writing journey on my youtube channel @mycraftorchard I also show how I use my planners and stationery. thank you for sharing xx

I also did my first NaNoWriMo in 2004. As a hobby writer, I find it a particularly helpful distraction during election years ;) But I have to admit that I haven't really used the forums or groups in many years. I'm still kind of bummed that I can't do a special "return" for my 20th year.

This year's going to hurt a lot between your 20th anniversary AND an election year. There are a handful of other groups popping up to corral writers. In theory you could still do one more year. It's not dead yet, but there will probably be very little support. I'm curious to see if anyone will take on being an Municipal Liaison given what they're being asked to do.

I gave up on NaNo about five years ago when they did a major website redesign. Before that, I did their events religiously every year for over a decade. I had to leave when the alphabet people hijacked not only the region but the national organization as well. They were very homophobic and more concerned about pronouns rather than genres. It's been like watching a car crash in slow motion as they put more and more resources into younger writers and coddling newbies at the expense of supporting people actually trying to write novels. They abandoned their core mission a long time ago so the demise was inevitable

That shift happened when Baty left long before the website redesign. Hopefully participating as long as you did allowed you to gain enough to keep you writing.

Thats good to know. Some authors I’ve spoken to have had success, but it’s hard to assess why.
