Yes I have to add something on the sides. I may get those signs and cut them in half so it’s not completely covered but enough to keep the poop in

All great ideas. We have ours outside and I was wondering how to clean the poop in winter when we get snow. Right now I just spray the trays in bucket and make garden tea.

Hatching time won't be able to add plastic sides to the cages they sell because they don't manufacture them, a company in turkey produces the cages, hatching time are just a seller of the Turkish brand cimuka

Yeah, When I last communicated to their customer service a couple of years ago, indicated that they were considering doing sides to their cages in the near future. And... that hasn't yet occured. With what I created was awesome and worked. Quail are very messy and I am glad i did what I did back then. Clean up became simple. Thanks for your insight and comment. Wayne

so as long as the trays are emptied and filled with new pine shaving you have a clean and fresh smelling garage? how is the noise level? How many do you expect to be able to keep indoor without smell and noise bothering you guys in the house?
@sparksfamilyhomestead
@sparksfamilyhomestead Год назад
Hey, sorry it took this long to get back to you. Since I currently have under 40 Quail, I clean their poop pans twice a week now. I use pune chips from tractor supply. We average close to 20 eggs a day as we also market the eggs. Since they are in the garage, no smell comes into our house. Hope to get a shed next year sometime to rehouse them. No smell in our garage. But if I do not change their trays each week....yikes, the smell is powerfully yuk! 😅

Thanks for the video! One of our biggest challenges has been dealing with the poop. Does your waste management company not require you to have your waste bagged up before putting in the trash bin?
@sparksfamilyhomestead
@sparksfamilyhomestead Год назад
No. Bird poop is biodegradable. Especially mixed in with pine chips. Never an issue. When the trash company drives over, that electronic arm simply picks up the huge rubbermaid type trash container and dumps in into the receptical with everything else. No human involvent. All machine. When living in a sub division like we were, this was incredible. It made for a non smelly garage where we housed the birds and the birds were always clean. The best inviroment in our situation back then. We have sinced moved and sold that house. We bought acreages in the Appalation mountains here in North Eastern Tennessee and our new home is almost ready to move into. If I were to do again Quail on our new homestead, I will try to mimic Kevin and Sarah from Living Traditions homestead {Utube}. He just made an outdoor incredible housing for his 28 birds. Wow! Im thinking to do that also as we are moving into the mountains with a lot of places to garden and create areas for poultry/chickens and hopefully Quail again. Thanks for the comment. Wayne

@@sparksfamilyhomestead Congrats on your new home! I subscribed to your channel and can't wait to watch your journey. We live in a subdivision now but would one day like to buy a couple of acres and start our own homestead. We just have quail for now. I think we will try your method of dealing with the waste. We were previously dumping into a smaller bagged trash can, but the trays didn't fit in it so it was awkward. We have a little bit of room in our backyard where we will try and compost some. Did you ever have any problems with maggots developing in your trash bin? It seems if we don't tie the bag up and dispose in the larger trash bin after each time we end up with maggots.

It looks like the grow-out cages have solid sides. Will the egg roll-out floor fit onto the grow-out cages?

Yes. Very easily.

The cages should be much cheaper since you have to do all the work of putting them together.

I love the sign idea. I would love to implement it but I live in hot & humid Florida and they need ventilation. I have the same cages and I was planning to use plastic garage sale signs folded in half & tucked under the tray. How do you keep the inside clean? Thanks for your time. Blessings 🕊🇺🇸🌎🕊
@sparksfamilyhomestead
@sparksfamilyhomestead Год назад
When I ordered the cages directly from Hatching Time, I requested the flooring for the Quail to be what they use for chickens. Thus, with my jumbo Quail, their poop mainly just slips through the slats. I have not needed yet to take the Quail out of their cages to power wash their cages. They have been in the same layered cages for almost a year now and cleaning has been so easy. Meaning, I mainly just empty the auto zone oil pans underneath twice a week. I put pine shavings on each pan each time. Making cleaning a breeze.

I believe close to 12x12 metal. They incredibly worked well with the Hatching Time cages. Hatchingbtime mentioned to me they are workingbon doing panels for sides and back. Similar to their brooders. That's coming up soon hopefully.

You can find these signs to use as I did at a Walmart. Near the paint section. At least here in Greeneville that's where they were in my area.

how many jumbo quail can you put in each layer?
@sparksfamilyhomestead
@sparksfamilyhomestead 3 месяца назад
3 jumbo quail per 1foot. So with hatching times cages, for them to be comfortable, Id have 9 to 10 in a single layer.
@LadyMaryanne
@LadyMaryanne Год назад
How many do you normally keep per cage? TY
@sparksfamilyhomestead
@sparksfamilyhomestead Год назад
It depends if the dividers are in or the cage layer and is totally open so they can rome around from one end to the other. I mainly have jumbo Quail. With jumbo and no cage dividers, approx 12. You just need discernment from them. If they start attacking each other, then reduce the Quail accordingly. Each decided section can hold up to 4. Anymore than that, gets crowded.

How do you keep the dust down?
@sparksfamilyhomestead
@sparksfamilyhomestead Год назад
Quail like chickens, are messy. Mine were always in our garage. To keep the smell away,dust, and to have during the hot seasons, keep the flies aways... With 36 birds, I had to change out their poop trays twice a week. It worked. It's more in tense if you reside in a hot weathered environment. But with clean cages (hatching time cages) dust, smell and poop have been a weekly chore but easy to maintain.

What do you mean you can’t do compost because your on a slope???
@sparksfamilyhomestead
@sparksfamilyhomestead Год назад
There is not a decent location on the back of our property that is level or flat to pile things into for a farm like composting pile. My back property angles upwards with a steep incline and when your at the top, not much space to do anything with. But, thanks for the question. I will reassess our limited space and rethink the compost issue here. We only are on 1/2 acre and with the house and septic and leach field on it also, not much space left to safely plant and do things with. Our desire is to possibly relocate and purchase several acres but the way things are in the nation and banking right now, we are staying put until things change.
