Soooo you have scrap tank too, sans the precious gift from your girlfriend. I LOVE my scrap tank. I started it (a rebuild) at the beginning of the pandemic. Panicking about the well-predicted algae stuff that started, I couldn’t find any Otocinclus. Instead I gambled not knowing too much about them and bought some Cherry Shrimp to help out. Tank is pristine thanks to their hard work. They’ve multiplied to a colony of a bajillion shrimp. I’m happy. Love your tank!

i looked yt for info about growing wild rice in open aquarium because it's a real water plant (below), but found nothing - so i'll be a pioneer trying it. the nitrate is to keep it low by biological filter mediums (even through the bottom of the tank providing the equipment for it). important is an oxidator filled with hydrogen peroxide h2o2 as sold by soechting or DIY for 100% saturation of o2 permanently, even in the morning until light would turn on.

You can control the guppy population if you give the same amount of food, like a pinch a day or something. In the wild you don't see endlers crawling on top of each other because there just isn't enough food to support such numbers.

Chris! Put a sponge on the intake!!! Or toole netting. I have two layers on my shrimps intake and the babies all grow up! I also don’t do water changes for the shrimp. Just rinse the filter media and top it off.

I used Reverse Osmosis water to top off my tanks. It reduces the amount of water changes I need to do. (FYI heavily planted tank w/co2). The only issue is evaporation will lead to high TDS if left for a few months. Also some Apistogrammas or german blue rams would go perfectly in those tanks.

love all of your videos, even these low energy ones like this one. Getting to the point where i dont have to do water changes or at least fewer ones is my goal. I have planted tanks and try to use fast growing ones to keep the nitrates in check. I am using sponge filters and a hang on the back filter which is pulling water from my under gravel filter. My idea here on this is that the wastes get pull down through the gravel to the under gravel filter where my root plants can pull the nutrients from so I dont have to use as much root tabs. i use just plan gravel in my tanks, thou i do use some of the larger river stones closest to the gravel filter then use normal gravel on top, about 3 inches in total.

I had a 20 gallon and didn't have to do a water change for just over a year. It only had 5 fish in it but the pest snail population was pretty large (I like the snails so I let them live and even gave a little extra food for them lol) I actually just broke it down because I got a 29 gallon. I made my 29 gallon dirted and capped it with 4 inches of sand. I'm so excited to see how my new setup will balance out. My 20 gallon only had gravel substrate and only about an inch of it, the 29 gallon should perform so much better!

My 25 gallon doesn't require water changes or root tabs. I have a little box filter and a sponge filter, very under filtered for all the platys. The fish keep breeding, the plants keep growing, and it's the ugliest tank with bad scraping and hair algae mixed in the floating Java moss, but everything does so well without interference so I just let it be. I do water changes every so often but I haven't gravel vaccumed in a year. After my betta died in my 7 gallon, I quit maintaining it and the Java moss and crypts went nuts. I recently added shrimp and can't even see them because of all the moss. Meanwhile, my 29 gallon is a constant struggle.

Fluval make the best filters, even better than eheim. Take note, cleaning your tank too regularly will just take all the nutrients out needed for your live plants. If you need to clean your tank on a weekly basis, you haven't got the right filter. Guess what? I don't even test my water! What do I need to do that for? There are plenty of unnecessary things fish keepers do. I have a fluval U3, and live plants in a heavily stocked tank, clean my water when needed and never test my water. Guess what? Fish all swimming around happily. 🐠

A bit off topic but i think a pet newt would be nice for you. It's a good break from gill breathing animals. Basically just hardy fish with legs that won't care that much about ph and hardness.
