The Fluval Edge filter A595B is a standard Hang On Back filter which services the 23 litre (6 US gallons) and the 46 litre (12 US gallons) 'Edge' tanks from Fluval.
After taking a look at this filter I'd consider it to be perfect for the 23 litre tank but too small for the 46 litre tank (if you're seeking to achieve a full cycle) as it holds less than 200g of Biogravel.
If you are only expecting to have 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite then it will be fine for the 46 litre tank - see notes about the FULL cycle below.
It is easy to upgrade and is well made - it seems to be available Worldwide so hopefully this upgrade video will be useful for you if you own one of these filters.
A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere.
Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome ultimate does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios:
(1 US Gallon = 3.8 litres)
(1kg = 2.2 lbs)
Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres
Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres
Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres
Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres
You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that they are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat.
Size a filter properly, set it up sensibly and you will have perfect water - it's that simple....and your filter won't be the dreaded 'Nitrate factory'.....you'll spend less money on treatments too......basically the filter is the foundation of a successful aquarium.
This series of videos is all about trying to squeeze more efficiency out of internal and external aquarium filters which generally have a limited filtering capacity - If you have a filter you'd like me to feature in a video then please contact me on:

I have used these filters for many years. When I Put too much media in,the water falls out the intake section and doesn't go in the large section. The tabs on the sides of the inner basket prevents the foams from floating out. Thank you -

Enjoying these videos. Have you done one on tetra 300 internal filter which is included as standard for tetra startline kits sold in Argos. They are very popular due to the price!

Just posting here to say I pimped my inbuilt back of the aquarium filter (aquamanta 90) with a ton (well OK couple kg) of biohome ultimate and its zero nirates (and perhaps obviously ammonia and nitrite as well) . So thanks.

Hi Richard, thanks for making this video. I have bought your 300g media bags and Sponges . I hope to replicate this soon. Would you by any chance know how long it will take to grow anaerobic bacteria in this filter? Also, should I avoid using seachem stability after every water change? Thanks!

Not that it’s going to increase available filter media, but I would strongly recommend upgrading the impeller to the one made for the Power filter 50, this will significantly increase the flow rate. P/N for the impeller is A-634.

Thanks but not really looking to increase the flow rate tbh it’s for platy fry

I wonder about your thoughts on the tank substrate also acting as a filter in the cycle? Nice video. Would love to see the Fluval Flex 57l pimped, it’s inside the tank though! 🤣

@@hakman239 I bought an extra foam insert. I cut the middle out of one and used it as a bigger foam frame which I stuffed full of biohome and sea Chem matrix. I did this in two of the chambers. Then put some fine floss in the third chamber. It’s been great so far.

@@hakman239 he did one of my filters years ago for a 125l Fluval. Still going strong but I recently rehomed it and downsized. I used his thinking to transform my Flex myself to get maximum biological filtration. Seems to be working well. Still have high nitrates though as it very nature…

Hi there! I love your video and i already watched it at least 10 times. I got myself fluval edge aquarium and it looks gorgeous. Im wondering if there is a possibility of instaling surface skimmer to the inlet of this filter. I am running put of space as i got myself quite wide heater and tropica nano co2 system and i dont think i have any wall space left. Any advice for me ?
@pondguru
@pondguru 21 день назад
I'm not sure that the edge filter would accept a surface skimmer as I'm not familiar with that filter. If you can go external (HOB or canister) you could have more filtration than you could ever need but I'm not sure that the edge aquariums would accept anything other than the built-in filter.

Hi there, could you please look at the Atman QZ-30 pre filter? It will be a big help to pimp that pre-filter because the water flow is a bit weird even though it has a pretty good looking appearance.

Liberty is the best and easiest hob filter on the market if you ask me. Just throw out the original stuff, cut a sponge to go in the bottom, top it up with biomedia and done... Super simple, no challenge at all
@Bruno.Antunes
@Bruno.Antunes 2 года назад
@@nickh9294 in this filter the water flows sideways, from the center to the edges. Not from the bottom to the top. Water follows the path of least resistance
@nickh9294
@nickh9294 2 года назад
@@Bruno.Antunes I know, got one myself. Remove the eheim cartridge crap. Cutout the walls between the pump and the low piece of the mediacompartment. Put in these low sections ceramic rings or coarse sponge. On top of this and the pumpcover put a 1" thick fine filterpad. As last biomedia. Now you've got bottom to top flow! Also you will now understand why this thing is called liberty. Pimpin these filters is easy mate
