Another great video! Thanks for posting all these helpful information! By the way, we’re arriving in Tokyo 1st week of April and Staying at ASAKUSA View Hotel for 4 days then going to Osaka. Could you please tell me where to catch the Nozomi line to Osaka. I heard Nozomi is the way to go. I’m about to buy from SmartEx but not sure what stations I need to catch the Nozomi line. Thanks in advance for your help.
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled 3 месяца назад
Glad it was helpful! The nearest station is Tokyo, so catch it from there. The station in Osaka is Shin-Osaka. Nozomi is the fastest, and there are plenty. Have a great trip!

@@japanunravelled thanks a bunch! I tried signing up to SmartEx but wouldn’t take my Master card nor my Visa. Tried several times no success. Might have to buy in person. 😔

Thank you for these informative news. Do you happen to know if they offer 28 days advance discount to Hikari too?

You're welcome. Looks like they don't - although they do have a discount on green car for Hikari.

Great video Andrew. I just purchased a ticket on EX (Hayatoku-3) to go from Tokyo to Hiroshima on a Nozomi green car on Nov 8th (about a month from now). It says that "This ticket will become invalid if you miss your train and it cannot be used for non-reserved seats". Is there a way to buy a train ticket that can changed in the event you miss it? From another site perhaps? Thanks!
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled 8 месяцев назад
Not sure about this. I think you can do this with tickets on Smart EX but maybe not with the discounted ones I guess. For flexibility people buy non-reserved seats, though that isn't ideal I know.

Hi - great video! I'm flying to Tokyo (Narita) and then hopping straight on the Nozomi to Osaka to meet my friends. I'm wondering whether you recommend booking seats to the Nozomi in advance or whether I can book once I get to Tokyo station. If I book in advance, I'm a bit weary that going to through customs/ immigration may take longer than expected and that I could risk missing my train. What do you recommend? :)
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled 7 месяцев назад
You can always just buy a ticket for an unreserved seat, which isn't tied to any particular train. Plus, at Tokyo station, the train will start empty.

Great informative vid! I’m from the UK and trying to book a couple of tickets in advance (2 people) for Tokyo > Kyoto (26 Oct) and Osaka > Tokyo (2 Nov) However, I don’t see any family, 7 or 14 day discounts on the Nozomi or Hikari trains for Tokyo > Kyoto on 26 Oct. There’s also no family or 21 day discount for Osaka > Tokyo on 2 Nov but the 21 day discount IS available on 1 Nov. Are the discounts restricted to certain days or do you have any advice on this?
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled 8 месяцев назад
As far as I can remember, Hikari doesn't get the discount tickets, except for the green car. As for why you can't get discounts on those trains - no idea. But if you're getting on at Tokyo (the first station), the train will start empty and you can line up early and pick your seats in the non-reserved car, with a non-reserved ticket. No need for reservations that way, and the seats are the same as reserved anyway. On the way back, definitely reserve though.
@eric5695

@@japanunravelled Thanks for this, I'm not too concerned about reserving seats. I'm interested in the discounts you get when you book in advance through SmartEX. It looks like SmartEX does not have an app for the UK and will have to book through the website directly. Do you know what happens if you miss the train you booked or is this ticket flexible with timings and you can just get on the next one? Also, do you have any money saving tips for booking the Shinkansen trains via any other methods?
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled 8 месяцев назад
If you're not reserving seats there's little to no point in using Smart Ex. Discounts are for reserved seats. If you look at the price for non-reserved, you'll see it's exactly the same price as displayed on Jorudan, which is what you pay on the day. If anyone knows otherwise, feel free to correct me. Tickets for unreserved seats aren't tied to any particular train - just so long as you use the unreserved car. The only method I know for saving money another way means a trip to the discount ticket shop, which is a bit involved and not something I'd recommend for the small saving you can get. Sorry I can't be of more help!

HellO! i will be traveling to japan this next april and i will be visiting OSAKA - KIOTO and TOKYO...in that order, the problem is that i will be arriving at haneda aiport so i will have to take a shinkansen from TOKYO to OSAKA and start my journey there, some people told me that i should NOT get the JR pass since its better to buy my tickets using SMART-EX, its more quicker and easy since i will just get a QR code with my number of sit and thats it, do you think i should do that too?
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled 4 месяца назад
Smart-EX is wildly overrated. There's nothing wrong with just buying a paper ticket for an unreserved seat in your case. The train starts at Tokyo so you shouldn't need a reserved seat. It will be exactly the same price as on Smart-EX. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NPT57efk2GY.html

Hi.. me and my family are travel nxweek from tokyo to kyoto.. i'm thinking what tickets to buy reserve or non reserve. Reserve is a little bit expensive compare to Non reserve.. the tokyo station is crowded for shinkansen non reserve? Or many empty seats there? Btw i always ride from shin yokohama. So this is the first time i will ride in tokyo. Please give me an advice in tokyo station
@japanunravelled

The train starts at Tokyo, so just go line up early for the non-reserved car and take your pick from all the empty seats.

I discovered yesterday unfortunately another reason why I don’t want to use the Japan Rail Pass ever again. This was actually the first time for me using the pass as a ticket shape you put in the gate. I was used to the big one you show to the guard. There’s a short story but the tl;dr is, I lost it. I will never ever use anything that requires me to find and then secure a tiny piece of paper that’s worth multiple tens of thousands of yen while rushing for a train. And now with the new price I can’t dream of what I would have felt like had I lost it. If I loose my IC card I can just go to the ticket office and get it all back. Until JR respects the sanity of their customers I won’t be buying any tiny paper that’s worth 50 thousand yen or more

Well, that's a you problem. I'm happy it fits into my wallet now because I find it much less likely to misplace and finally no more queuing at the manned gates.
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled 8 месяцев назад
I'd like to see an IC card version of the pass, or at least a more robust material used. But I think that's a long way off. Sorry you lost it.
@japanunravelled

The no queueing is great, definitely. I picked up a metal business card case at Daiso a while back, which is the perfect size for passes and seat reservation tickets. Another option if your wallet is already full!

@@japanunravelled I think that what upsets me the most is that once you lose it the don’t let you buy a new one until the one you lost expires. And that when you explain to the guy at the ticket gate the situation he is like please pay 340 ¥ and buy individual tickets. I had many different tourist passes which I was able to not loose, I’m not really angry at JR, I’m angry at myself for being clumsy. But it did bring me to the realization that putting so much money on a tiny paper is a risk. So definitely in the future if the pass only saves me a few thousands I just think it’s not worth the risk
