There was a case in 12th century Japan where a man who saved his enemy's son because “he was still a child and it would be pitiful to execute him” was avenged by the grown enemy's son. (The boy who took revenge at this time later became the ruler of the country, but his wife's family took power after his death. This wife's family is the Hojo family.) From then on, it became the custom of the samurai to execute the sons of their enemies, even if they were babies. It is recorded that “there was no one who saw the execution of Tokiyuki's elder brother who did not shed tears.” (The uncle who offered his nephew to the enemy was condemned as “unbecoming of a samurai,” and in the end he became a beggar and starved to death.)

All the adult characters are questionable in this show, but I do love the whole "game of life" theme and how the animation (line work & colors) expresses that. Tokiyuki is young and despite all the messed up things happening, his imagination is still colorful... He has the desire to live & experience new things.
