I know so many people only really talk and rave about the first 10 minutes of this movie. Rightfully so cause it’s peak animation and peak Pixar. But one scene that is SEVERELY overlooked is Carls scrapbook epiphany scene later in the movie. He is so disappointed and feels that he failed Ellie. Having gone their whole lives and never being able to accomplish that goal. And just when he was about to put the book away, he notices a picture is the section he expected to be blank. She filled it out. As Carl flips through each page, he realizes he didn’t fail her. And that she was satisfied with spending her life with Carl, even if it wasn’t a grand exotic adventure. This movie has such a great message of showing that life is not always about the goals. Things will happen and it’s really the about journey. And it’s such a nice detail that if you notice earlier in the film, Ellie ushered Carl to read the book on her hospital bed. But once she died, he was so devastated emotionally that he closed himself off to everyone and the whole world. Carls development from the moment Ellie died to the end of the movie was so well done.

That's my favorite scene! It's easily the best, what a payoff and elegant demonstration of the themes. Overall honestly, although I love the opening as much as anybody, people saying that's the only good bit make me ease up on my praise, personally. It's a movie about continuing to live past tragedy, and that's a beautiful thing. The journey isn't just "filler" between the opening and that scrapbook moment. To believe so is missing the movie's point.

Charles Muntz is based off of a real man, Charles Mintz. He was a friend of Walt Disney and actually stole his first invention, Oswald the rabbit. Also Doug was able to „capture“ Kevin because he was the only hunting dog of the pack (a retriever), while all other ones were guard dogs I really love such attention to detail

It's more implied that Ellie just can't have any kids, not that she miscarried _one._ The "very large mouse" Russell was chasing was most likely a Virginia opossum, North America's only marsupial. They have a hairless, prehensile tail. Technically, Carl wasn't lying about a snipe being a bird with a long beak and little beady eyes. The snipe is a small fishing bird that lives all over North America. Dogs aren't colorblind. They see in a blue-yellow spectrum of color.

Yes and no... its open to the interpretation. Specially because they were decorating a bedroom for a baby. Normally people dont do that, if they were not expecting. Ellie may had a miscarriage and for some reason it may had complications to a point that she couldnt get pregnant again.
@SuperDrocket
@SuperDrocket Месяц назад
@@cassandramcbride7007 Also quite possible that she's able to get pregnant but not able to carry a baby to term. That's a fairly common form of not being able to have children - attempting is basically just a long string of miscarriages, and they only showed us the first one because watching a woman go through a dozen miscarriages of wanted children is more heart-breaking than even this movie was willing to depict.

Russel is really like the child Carl and Ellie never had. It takes Carl way too long to wake up and realize that the kid is trying to get him to do what Ellie would have wanted, and that the adventure can still be had, with these new people, and he can still keep her alive--- not with the house, but by having these experiences, and still engaging with the world. His life isn't over, and she wouldn't want him to stop living it so quickly. She can't be there to live it with him, so he has to live it for her.
@aphreyst4551
@aphreyst4551 24 дня назад
I love the little detail of when Carl tells Russell that he can't keep Kevin, and looks up at the house and asks Ellie what he should do. Russell has the idea to ask Ellie if it's ok to keep Kevin and claims she said yes (which she would do, she always had birds in the zoo), Carl immediately turns to the house and says "but I told him no!" It’s such a classic moment of a kid and their parents.

Muntz's death is hits quite hard if you think on the context of both him and Carl. At the beginning both were bitter old men who lived obsessed with something. With Carl was the attatchment to his memories with Ellie, for Muntz, was trying to capture Kevin at all cost. While Carl grew and eventually moved on, leaving his obsession behind, Muntz doubled down and that brought him to his own demise. Carl could have ended up like Muntz if it wasn't for the fact that Russel made him open up and move on with his life.

The script of this movie is just brilliant. One of my favorite scenes is when Russell tells Carl about getting ice cream with his dad. His remarks that the “boring” stuff are the things he remembers most foreshadows Carl’s character growth during the scrapbook scene. You don’t need to go on an extraordinary adventure or make an amazing discovery to live a fulfilling life. The mundane and ordinary things are what actually make life so meaningful. Ellie and Russell both knew that, Carl learned that, and Muntz never did. Love your videos, Oscar! If you haven’t seen it, you should do a reaction on Finding Nemo! It’s one of my favorites!

In Ratatouille, when Remy gets separated from his family and encounters a dog, you can see from the shadow that it's Doug (from Up). As Carl and Ellie's house flies past the little girl's room, you can see her Lots-o-Hugs bear (from Toy Story 3) next to her bed.

This film is a masterpiece- and not just the opening sequence. So many of the jokes throughout the film come back to be critical when it comes to the final confrontation. The tennis ball, the squirrel, the 'Point', and more, the writing is so efficient and on point. All the emotional moments hit so well that they make me tear up every time. I kind pair this with Hot Fuzz as an example of how to write an incredibly poignant screenplay from a ridiculous premise.

It shows a couple in love that never really get a chance to do the things they want and one of them dies leaving the other feeling guilty about not doing enough with them while they were there. I think it's a big fear for both my parents. So, they don't enjoy it but I'm guessing it's because it hits a little too close to home. UP is one of my favourites from Disney. As for you’re question on dog colour blindness, they have dichromatic vision. So they can see blues and yellows, but can’t see reds or discern proper greens like we can. That’s why a brown or orange toy can get lost in grass to a dog when we can clearly see it. I love the way the dogs are portrayed in this movie. Dogs can be very intelligent and learn and be trained for a lot of things, but even the most well trained (or “obedient”) dog is still a puppy inside and they all love to play and be goofballs in their own way xD I’ve worked with RAAF dogs, farm dogs and everything in between. The mother of one of my dogs was a working farm dog and my girl is absolutely insane in how quick she picks things up. She always surprises me with the things she teaches herself or the words she understands me saying (and I’m talking complex). Dogs are amazing creatures. I’m quite passionate as you can tell if you have read this far. Heh..

This has been said thousand times before, but always worth mentioning. Up was able to tell a better love story in 15 minutes than most movies can't in 2 hours.

The first time I watched Up, it was from the bit where Carl opens the door and Russel is on the porch, and the house is already flying. So I missed the beginning bit with Ellie and their story. For years I just saw that movie as a silly film about a bird, talking dogs, and a flying house. It wasn't until my boyfriend (now husband) said it was one of Disney's best films and it made him sob, that I gave it another chance. Now I get it. That beginning bit gives it ALL the context. What a gut punch. I really enjoyed your reaction to it, Oscar. Your insights into Carl's character journey really gave me a whole new appreciation of the film. Oh and yes, please do Stranger Things! 🙏 Big love from Manchester UK xXx

The whole feel of the old house surrounded by construction with the property vultures, and the old couple not wanting to be move. Always reminds me of “Batteries Not Included”.

Great observation about both Charles Munz and Karl being obsessed with their goals to the detriment of their own lives. The KEY difference between the two is that Munz was alone, while Karl had loved ones. It was his realization that Ellie had all the adventure she needed in her life with him and in their love, and that he did not need to hold onto this goal but should be open to start a new chapter, and it's the friendship of Russel and also Doug that helped him, while Munz had nothing but his obsession for easily 60 years and that ultimately was his (literal) downfall. There's a lot of raving about the first ten minutes of this movie but it's SUCH A GREAT FILM OVERALL.

This movie is so bonkers. Dealing with death, Dante’s inferno, and containing it in a Rohl Dhal’s “James and the giant peach” esque childhood realistic horror is amazing.

I think it’s poetic that at the end 34:12 you really see how much was broken, how much he had to lose, symbolized by the house, in order to obtain his goal. All he wanted was to realize his adventure dreams with Elle, but he became so focused on that goal that the house got destroyed in the process and he missed the most important part, what Russell was saying and what Elle shows through the scrapbook. They already had an adventure, they lived one in the quiet moments of their life. Ugh this movie is too good.

15:35 even this small moment is a tearjerker for me. It's one of the first times Carl gets to see this place that he and his late wife Ellie always dreamed of being able to go to, and it's so beautiful to see his eyes widen and have a genuine smile on his face when he softly says, "There it is."

I was watching your reaction while she was in her room watching it and I was watching her in the camera and I looked on the camera and she was gone and I looked up as she was running into my room because she heard the movie we turned the movie off and watched your reaction together ❤

It is a heartbreaking opening. I remember watching this in theaters and seeing that opening with them as kids and the transition. At the end of the montage the whole theater was silent as Carl went back into his house. There were certainly tears in my eyes at the beginning and at certain moments throughout the film. One of my favorites from Disney and Pixar.

I've currently got Up as my number 4 film of all time on my Flickcharts ranking page, not only does it have what I think is easily one of the most impactful opening sequences of all time but even as the film progresses it just keeps paying off. It's both funny and thoughtful with a great message of being willing to remember the past but also let it not weigh you down in your pursuit of enjoying life in the present.
