This is actually the method I've ended up on favouring the most now for agar. I had reaally bad condenstaion problems and having the breather port seems to help massively with that. I was using small mason jars but then discovered you can put polypropylene in the pressure cooker so this is much cheaper and easier!
I found I have a condensation issue too. I will try the hole, and cover it with micropore tape. How much water goes in the pressure cooker, about a cup or is there a specific amount or level. I will be buying PC very soon. I am using microwave Tek rn.
Thank you so much mate! Love your videos!! Straight to the point no unnecessary blabbering :) I've had to waste so much time to learn Half if what I learn in 3mins in your videos. Thanks again!
Do you cover the pots with foil when PCing? Am getting varying degrees of condensation, from minor to a good pool covering the agar, I cover with foil BTW. Many thanks for the vids and shop mate 👍
I don't cover them with foil mate! I made a post on my website about how to avoid condensation when pouring agar, it's a bit harder with no-pour but if you cool them correctly and store them at the right temperature you can get clear results! archersmushrooms.co.uk/how-to-stop-condensation-forming-on-agar-plates/
Hi mate! You don't need to be exact, over or under won't matter much on the malt! On the agar though if you use too little it won't set. You can guess that 1 teaspoon is around 5 grams! You could just use 'snoopdog scales' if youre with me!
No pour means after sterilization you aren't pouring hot napalm into the cups. Before you sterilize you do have to pour, ofc. But there isn't a need for a still airbox or actual care as nothing is hot and any aireborne contams will get sterilized anyways. Edit: I know your comment is old, but this is here for anyone else wondering.
Can you get by with steam sterilization a little longer or using a microwave? I have some MEA pre mixed agar on the way from Amazon. I have no pc just a big pot I use for steaming BRF jars. Thanks!
Hi mate, you can prop your metal trivet up with just about anything heat tolerant. Look for 'Pressure cooker trivets' or cooking racks to fit your PC! Best of luck!
You can use the metal lid rings if you have nothing else. But I would suggest hitting up webstaurantstore and picking up a steamer rack that fits your PC. They are usually $5 or less.

No tape or parafilm on ketchup cup ? Its that ok ? Thank you
Thanks for sharing this. How much water do you put inside the pressure cooker? Problem I had trying this with jars was water went inside my jars. I'd put 3 litres of water inside the pressure cooker
Much appreciation. For PC sterilization, do you know of there are any specific material specs you need to look for when you purchase these cups? We're here in the US and I've not found much info on material specs on condiment cups and I want to be sure they don't turn into a blob in my PC. Thanks again
Just want to point out, without breather hole, I did 20 pp5 plates inoculated with liquid culture and some that were clones. I had no breather port and had Zero growth for weeks, eventually I thought fuck it and I opened one plate to see what was going on in there, the next day there was suddenly mycelium, I clicked. No fresh air, so I poked holes with a hot pin and covered with micropore in still airbox and now the shits growing fucken wild. It really depends on how deep the pots are, not too deep is good but too shallow without breather holes and nothing will grow, also, if you exclude breather holes after a few weeks the mycelium will use up all the O2 and stall until it gets fresh air. The proper petris have loose lids and allow fresh air exchange, these deli cups don't. The breather hole is needed if you use shallow pp5 cups like the ones for soy sauce
Oh, another question.. What's the difference between DME (dry malt extract) and LME (light malt extract)? Both are usefull? I'm from Brazil, and I was looking for some malt extract and I just found dry malt extract. Thanks!
Hi mate - Dried is easier to measure, store and mix. Syrup is fine but messier and it can contaminate inside the lid, at least thas what I found when I used the syrup!!
