Ive made loads of these trees and I have a suggestion. When doing the bottom, brush it with plain white glue first. It makes the base really sturdy and almost hides the raw edges , as well as keeping them from fraying.

I Love these trees, I haven't made them for Christmas, but I have made them in fall colors, as fall is my favorite time of the year. I also Love your, just make it work attitude. Crafting is supposed to be fun, so instead of stressing about something not working out perfectly, (as you say) "just make it work".

When my mum gave up sewing due to developing dementia, she gave me her sewing machine. In its cabinet were tins full of old fashioned pins, with no glass heads. I already had my own pins but just couldn’t bear to discard perfectly good pins. I’ve been looking for a use for them, and this looks a great idea for that!

Love your videos! Just a few suggestions! (1) You keep mentioning "sizing" in your videos, but you don't tell us how to do it and what you mean. (2) When you were covering the bottom of the tree, I know you were were promoting sales for the green fabric, but it would have been LOADS simpler to use one piece of round fabric.
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 7 лет назад
Thanks so much for your questions and comments! (1) Sizing is a fabric spray similar to starch that we prefer since it will not distort the fabrics or flake. Our favorite brand is Mary Ellen's Best Press: www.amazon.com/Mary-Ellens-Starch-Alternative-Ounces-Scent/dp/B0018N8B0E/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1476992093&sr=8-5&keywords=best+press (2) Thank you so much for pointing that out, we were just giving that option since someone who gets the green strip fabric from us would be able to use our method but if you use fabric from your stash, you can absolutely use a circle on the bottom of the tree :)

We used 6 inch trees in this video! If you use a larger tree, you can use the same size squares, just add more of them. Personally, we like the look of the 2.5" squares, but you can adjust the size of the squares to be larger or smaller depending on the size of your tree cone, it's just up to you. Aren't they so much fun? You can absolutely make your own stars. Just trace out the shape on some freezer paper and use that as your template to cut out your fabric and Heat N Bond Lite. Then iron your fabric to the Heat N Bond. You'll be able to use whatever fabrics you prefer, and then you would just adhere the two stars together with the pin in the middle like Jen shows in the video. Let me know if that makes sense. ;) - Morgan

It's a fusible appliqué star. You can make them yourself or we have them available in our shop. - Morgan

Where can you see shabby fabrics, ie the stars?

Are you refereeing to the stars? We no longer have these stars. A local craft store may have them. - Abby

How many squares do you need for this size tree?
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 7 лет назад
Hi Carolyn! The amount of squares you'll need depends on your layering choices. We suggest cutting the squares a couple rows at a time as you go. We started the bottom row using 6-7 squares.

How many squares do you use?
@ShabbyFabrics

It is approximately between 7-10 jelly roll strips if you are using a 7-9" tree and it really depends on your spacing and layering. Hope this helps! - Abby

How much fabric is used?
@ShabbyFabrics

The amount of squares you'll need depends on your layering choices. We suggest cutting the squares a couple rows at a time as you go. We started the bottom row using 7 squares for some reference. Each square is 2.5"x2.5" so if you use a pre-cut that is already cut into 2.5" strips, you won't need many strips at all: bit.ly/JellyRollsShabbyFabrics

They don't say how many squares to cut?

This can vary based on how closely you group your pieces as you go around so we suggest starting with about 45 and going from there :)
