I made them out of my mothers clothing the year she passed away. Her favorite color was red so they looked beautiful! Everyone loved them. I used my embroidery machine to put her name on the ribbon too!

It is always fun to see them on trees of those I have given over the years & they never get old. I have taught my children & grandchildren & they love giving them as gifts as well. You can make them as simple or extravagant as you want by adding other items. So fun to watch how others chose to make their own.

I use either two thin elastics or pieces of string to wrap around the center of the ball to find the two points (north and south if you will) so they will be opposite each other. I mark these points with a black marker ( which won't be seen under the fabric) then remove the elastics (or string) and make the ball the same way you do. I can't seem to eye ball the two points and had to take the ball apart before now. Thanks for a great tutorial!

I’ve made many of these over the years, but always revisit the tutorial. I use a .5” template I cut out of an index card instead of guessing. I also start with an extra square out of the center fabric and pin it flat down first. It makes starting out super easy and symmetrical. ❤️

‘I’d love to see that template. I have just started my first one and the first 4 fabrics looked perfect. Then when the eyeballing started, my star pattern started looking wonky. I redid some so many times, the pins starting showing through (which I can make look like sparkles I suppose) I did measure the ball and marked the halfway point on the opposite side so I knew where to start. Mine will not be symmetrical, for sure.
@twdobesh
@twdobesh 3 года назад
JanaB I cut .5” off the short end of an index card. I use that template to line up the pin along the folded crease of the previous folded fabric. I wish I had a way to contact you privately, I would show you in pictures.

If you have it, try wrapping your finger(s) with satin medical tape. If not, you can use masking tape. I've wrapped my fingers in masking tape plenty of times, LOL. It's inexpensive (I use the 1/2in. width. It's $1.00 at Meijer!), and works great at keeping pins (and X-acto blades, LOL) from rippin' up my phalanges while letting me still feel what I'm doin' :) :P

Question: Can this project be done using glue instead of the pins? Love the tutorial the quilted look is just beautiful!
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 8 лет назад
Yes, it could +Evey Taylor! However, you would need to hold each piece in place until the glue set and there is a chance your points would not be as sharp as when pins are used.

I love that Shabby Fabrics has become part of my annual holiday traditions. I learned to make these 2019 and made them in blue and white and some in reds and greens as gifts. The same fold also made the no sew cone Christmas trees. Then, this year, I made the no sew wreath ornament photo frames for gifts. For 2021, I'm hoping to make some of the placemats and the jelly roll tote.

Hi Jennifer ~ quick question. I want to do a military ornament with the center being the ARMY emblem. How would I do the center ? I was thinking of cutting a small circle instead of the folded pieces. Do you think that would work? Thanking you in advance.
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 8 лет назад
Yes, you could cut the emblem out in a circle and pin it down flat then start the layering of the square pieces a little further out from the center in order to have the emblem show +Cynthia DesLauriers. That way you can cover all of the raw edges of the cut emblem piece while having it still be the center of focus. Let me know if that makes sense! Thank you so much for watching!

I have some 12" balls, what size squares would I use? Love your tutorials.
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 4 года назад
We're using fabric squares that are 1/2 inch smaller than our ball. So you'd want to try 11.5" squares. We recommend trying with scraps or paper first, just to make sure it works before you cut into your nice fabric. :) Let us know how it turns out! - Morgan
