We need standardized testing, but we need it to measure what has been learned.

@The Broken Tower Children should be given standardized tests when they enter preschool to determine their needs. As early as practical all students should be given a personality test and an IQ test. The results should be used to place them into class rooms according to learning style and innate ability. Students should be taught a standardized curriculum and given standardized tests on the subject matter at standardized benchmarks. Including a standardized test at the end of a grade level. Why do teachers keep making their own lesson plans? Standardize them. Standardized tests remove the subjectivity from grading. Pass or fail. No points for being "special".

@@psychicspy so you didn't really comprehend what the video was about. All your idea would do is separate kids into more of "smart and dumb" classes and doesn't actually address the issues. The video was saying that there is no one size fits all approach and there needs to be major flexibility for each individual. Your idea would just lump a few groups of kids together when that wouldn't solve the problem at all. The standardized curriculum would just become an "average" for each group that you've defined. I think standardized testing is a stupid way of determining intelligence. Especially doing that at the kindergarten age. Some kids have more trouble sitting still for that long. Some kids might have much higher levels of anxiety. also what would you be testing them on? Kids at that age wouldn't have developed a lot of problem solving skills and obviously haven't learned basic math and English yet. In the us there are actually standardized curriculums depending on the state. This guy is from the states. Your idea is the opposite of flexible. It lumps kids together in the same way the system basically already does. A test in kindergarten should not determine how well a child does in the rest of your life.

@@wesleyheitz8359 I went to high school with a girl who believed that rocks grew into mountains. When asked why she believed that, "Well, were else would they come from?" was her response. Though cute as a button and sweet as honey, she belonged in the "special" class. You should not expect highly gifted students to reach their full potential sitting in a classroom with my very blonde friend listening to a teacher struggling to teach Earth science at a level that will not be over her head, but obviously was. Separating students into groups according to their innate abilities is the very opposite of "one size fits all". The only thing that could bring a student closer to a tailor made curriculum would be self-paced individualized computer based learning. Standardized tests are the only way to ensure that everyone is held to the same standards. The only way to encourage meritocracy. The problem with standardized tests is that educators teach to the test in an attempt to raise the scores of less capable students. They should instead teach to the curriculum and the test should measure how well the students absorbed and understand the curriculum.

An average is simply an expression of a relationship between discrete units and a set (or sets) of discrete units.

It's a great question, and it would be really interesting if things came full circle--from business practices being imported into education, negatively, to better educational practices helping improve business! The key principle is self-actualization: people live lives of meaning and contribution when they continually discover, develop, and apply their unique gifts. Perhaps if your company's training follows the factory model, it could be worth reassessing it to see if there are better ways to teach them. Or seeing if there are ways you can enable your employees (or customers) to discover or develop their own unique talents rather than follow a rigid role or use case. I work with people who have expressed envy of the position that I hold within the company. Whenever someone says to me " man, you have my dream job" I stop and ask them to compare their path through life with my own. In every case their chosen path through life could not have lead them to do my job. While others were playing sports in highschool I was attending a voctech school to learn electronics. While those same people were working fast food jobs after graduation, I was working for an engineering company while attending college. The school system isn't the problem. Students are the problem.

Every single one of us is unique and deserves a chance to learn how we learn- as individuals!

@@laaaliiiluuu He did not do well in the standard school and did not think the same way as an average student. Luckily his parents did not damn him but sent him to a school that allowed their students to pursue their interests in their own ways. That was when Einstein began delving into Isaac Newton's work. Even after formal education, he decided to conduct his research through deep thought processes rather than the standardized way of scientific research. Many thought him to be a failure before his discovery of the theory of Relativity. Isn't that interesting.

@@florenceofori7930 Thank you for the information! Yeah, I feel many geniuses are falling behind because they are being told they are stupid due to not fitting into the status quo. But as this topic has gotten more and more attention throughout the past years I have a positive outlook for our future generations and we can create the foundation for them at least.
