Thomas Kloepfer has been managing the Pitchfork Farms on Mukaishima island for the last eight years (since 2011). The farm does not use chemical pesticides or fertilizers, instead uses "natural farming" methods. Watch the 2021 follow-up video with farmer Thomas here:

The Pitchfork Farms blog says, "Our farm uses regenerative agriculture to create a thriving hillside orchard. We grow fruits, herbs, and vegetables. Its a great place to work and relax, as we have year round harvest and can enjoy tranquil views of the Seto inland sea. We are developing the farm to be a center for sustainable production, and will incorporate intensive growing techniques to improve soil health. We are dedicated to connecting farms and community, challenging conventional approaches to agriculture, and celebrating the land, the people, and the moment. " higherground11...
In this video, we had the chance to tour the farm and learn about all the sustainable practices he has in place. We also had a chance to visit the textile shop that Thom and his wife run, so check back for that video coming soon to this Inbound Ambassador channel.

Thomas has such a deep knowledge of organic and natural agriculture as well as local tradespeople and craftspeople to collaborate with to make a stronger, more sustainable business overall - so excited for all the wonderful work he and his wife Kaori are doing in the Mukaishima area of Hiroshima, Japan.

This is more like organic farming, not natural farming. A few key features of Fukuoka natural farming are: 1. Random seeding. Let nature decide what should and should not survive. Humans should only help the vegetables we want to compete by seed protection and say flooding the field in order to grow rice and kill the cover crop. 2. No composting. 3. No disruption of soil. 4. No raised bed or any artificial structure that is used to kill all other plants. 5. Let everything grow and allow for a balanced ecosystem to build itself. 6. A closed subsistence system. No importation of any organic matter. No redistribution of organic matter.

thanks for commenting - are you a natural farmer in Japan? I'd love to hear more about what you are doing to grow food! It's such an important job!

@@seeksustainablejapan No, I am in Oregon, USA. I am doing some permaculture and some Fukuoka natural farming. I started to heal my 2 acres of barren land, with only a couple of ornamental trees, some rose bushes, some ornamental shrubs, and a seriously damaged grass lawn, by first growing trees, letting all grass grow wild and self seed, and by doing some organic farming. Now, I still do permaculture. But I start to have daikon and other vegetable, such as Austrian winter pea, some lettuces, volunteers growing in my 1 acre of land. The other acre was lent to a grass grower to grow annual rye grass and is now like a desert with a lot of weeds, some annual rye grass, and about 10 trees that I planted. My property is infested by ground squirrels, gophers, moles, voles, wild rabbits, deer, wild turkey cause I am situated right between a grass grower and small rural forest with some neighbors mowing their grass very low. I bought this property 7 years ago. I focused on planting trees, not growing food, especially in the past 5 years. I still have gophers, ground squirrels, voles, and rabbits in my main property. But the trees are starting to take control of these underground critters. I just started to grow more food this year using mainly permaculture methods. But I believe I will be about 5 to 10 years from now that I may become totally self-sufficient in terms of vegetables and fruits doing more natural farming and less permaculture. But I don't mind. Unfortunately, the weather in Oregon is seriously bad with no rain in the summer, extremely low relative humidity, and some strong wind in the summer. It is very difficult because of the cold wet winter and hot dry summer here. But I am thinking hard to make myself self-independent. And I am trying my best to break away from organic farming or permaculture and practice more Fukuoka natural farming.

@@trumplostlol3007 Yea we are mixed production utilizing both organic farming and natural production techniques. I know that some farmers/gardeners grow food using only natural farming, but we are also a business selling our produce to many parts of Japan which requires us to bring in external inputs that were not available when we began living on this property. (Seeds and trees being one of the major external inputs we have brought in from outside.) Our property was once a monoculture of citrus, abandoned, and all the trees were dead or dyeing when we moved here. Since living here our farm may be one of the more if not most bio-diverse spaces in the region....not an ecologist...but I like to think we are doing our part.

Animals, trees fall there's movement of soil in nature so I think the "no dig" is slightly misleading. Damaging the deep soil or sup soil is something else. You could also argue that deep compression of the soil has to be broken up too.

Thanks for commenting! There is so much we are still learning about the best way to do farming in ways that damages the soil and surrounding nature less - thanks for adding your ideas
