As a kid, I absolutely adored the James Bond behind the scenes material on the DVDs. They were just crammed to the brim with interesting documentaries and listening to Patrick Macnee narrate them was superb. Can't exactly call the Craig eras behind the scenes content overly stocked. Other than the Bond Girls are Forever documentary on the Casino Royale DVD, they've all felt very sparse.
@@al007italia In fairness those were put on DVD later in most cases so there were plenty of 'retrospective' material to add on [like trailers etc] which isn't going to be the case for new films.
As he says in the video most new releases get a pretty poor selection of puff piece extras these days, the heyday of stuffed discs from major studios are over it seems.
The steelbook actually looks a lot better "in person" here than the images online. I might snag a second copy to grab it. I've had that keyring the past few months and it's great! Wonderful video, Calvin. It's a shame we didn't get more BTS features. Even just one spoiler talk with Purvis and Wade would've made it infinitely better.
Getting the Blu-Ray feels like the satisfying culmination/final step when each Bond film comes out. First there’s the wait in anticipation for the film to come to cinemas, then the euphoria as you watch it for the first time, then another wait before you can finally add it to your collection. I love it. Just putting my No Time to Die Blu-Ray next to all the others was awesome. (I have them all as individual blu-rays cause I hate box sets.)
i have the making of book. my dad, a bond fan himself, got it. i showed this to my motion graphics teacher and he loved it and we talked about the making of nttd throughout the class.
3:27 If the DB5 not wrapping around bothers you, just pretend its been A View to a Kill-ed and Bond is merely driving the separated front half of the car
Very sorry to hear you’re having to put up with Covid, Dale. Take care of yourself and I hope you recover very soon! Happy New Year to you and best wishes!
I'm still in shock that this film ends with Bond dying at the hands of Austin Powers. That final "yeah baby" before Bond gets shot in the head by Powers sends chills down my spine every single rewatch.
@@peterfranks6243 How does it rip off Austin Powers in anyway? [Also, they have a swipe at 'Bond and Blofeld are Brothers' meme in NTTD as Q states 'Good job your not really related' as they merly spent time together in the past, which is admittedly unnecessary].
@@peterfranks6243 I have seen it and really don't get any real similarities [if your referring to the interrogation, Goldmember was spoofing Silence of the Lambs, a film which influenced the Bond-Blofeld interrogation but I got more of the 'Gordon/Batman confronting the Joker in the Dark knight-especially when Bond attacked Blofeld].
Calvin nice to see you’re a fellow physical media collector. Please show off your entire Blu-ray collection sometime! Would be cool seeing what you own. Blu-Ray collection videos are very interesting and popular.
Speaking of extras, the Die Another Day Special Edition DVD (Yes, I bought it the day of release in Spring 2003) has 5 hours of content which I don't think I've got round to watching all of it yet after all these years. Managed to watch part of the 75 minute documentary and listened to Pierce's commentary (he doesn't say too much) - and there's also another behind the scenes video only for region 2 😳 I reckon that streaming is the reason they have cut back on extras, along with time and money, and behind the scenes content is now on RU-vid and podcasts. But those early DVD days were fun.
Wasn't the Pierce commentary with Rosamund Pike? Your right, it's probably not worth the expense to do the extras on physical media [as commentaries are not done for free] when so many are streaming now. I remember they started putting deleted scenes/behind the scenes stuff on youtube a few years ago which started the 'bare bones' trend we have now.
My physical media is a huge deal to me, thanks to you’re channel I’ve learn so much about bond and I am currently collecting the entire bond series in physical media, DVD, BLURAY ECT!
The main reason that the Blu-ray has the 2 discs is because the DVD does too, with the exact same special features as the Blu-ray. It had to keep continuity ig.
I got the standard blu-ray and it was such a nice little thing to get for myself. I love getting blu-rays anyway but I think for this film and Spider-Man when that comes out I absolutely need to own these films cos I love the films so much and having easy access is lovely.
Happy new year to you! Thank you for the sweet video. I'm glad not to get the Single Film yet - especially when I hear there is no commentary from Fukunaga. I was thinking of waiting to the middle or end of this new year to find a simple 5 disk collection in my favourite supermarket, that I have the Films together in one packet. I would pay extra money for an proper documentation and behind the scene, b-roll disc, etc, tho. Eager to watch this, more then the film itself.
I’ve preordered the 4K and am debating also getting the steelbook. I plan on getting the DVD too because I have all the films on DVD and I won’t be able to live with myself if I have an incomplete Bond collection.
Happy New Year Calvin, glad to hear we’re both devoted physical media collectors. Looking forward to buying No Time To Die on 4K Blu-ray. I remember when Casino Royale (2006) was the 2nd movie I ever bought on regular Blu-ray. Also fingers crossed for a 4K collection with all 25 Bond films this year for the 60th anniversary.
Got it for Christmas on Blu ray, me personally I prefer physical media. I wouldn’t be shocked if they release special edition version by the end of year. I never got the chance to watch it in the cinema, not watched the Blu Ray yet. Happy New Year.
I am tempted to get it but I am also anticipating a 60th anniversary 4k 25 film box set release by the October 2022 so I am wondering if I should wait for that. The films were already remastered in 4k back when they remastered them 16 or so years ago so I can imagine it will not take much to repackage them and watch the money roll in!
I wouldn’t expect anything like that anytime soon. If such a collection were to come out this year, people would know by now. Also, the masters done for the Blu-rays are not quite up to standards anymore, considering they heavily used Noise Reduction, which is never really looked favorably on with 4K releases.
Great Video! Thanks for promoting physical media! I got the steelbook just in time for christmas and since i missed it in theatres this was my first time watching it… Picture and sound as you said are phenomenal… Love the film as well and the steelbook of course. Got it from amazon… so not zavvi exclusive i presume…
I ended buying the no thrills 4K/BluRay combo, because I was sorta planning for the day whenever I upgrade to a 4K Player. But, Calvin my ears perked up when you mentioned the Being James Bond documentary being included on that particular box set which I didn't even realize would be an advantage of upgrading to the more expensive copy for the film!
I grabbed the steelbook (which was available in the US from best buy) and was pleasantly suprised by it. It looks great next to the other four Craig era steelbooks I own.
Over here in America I got the Target Exclusive Blu-ray that came with the booklet and a nice box with a cover of Craig riding the moter cycle in Italy. There's also a Walmart one that has a Safin mask keychain and the Bond and Madeline cover.
I know this is totally the wrong video to admit this on but I generally try to avoid double dipping on discs so I've let the CR and QoS pass me by in the past... Kind of regret it now as I loved those steelbooks they did for all the films involving Spectre/Daniel Craig where they used images from the title sequences. Those were quite lovely!
A single-layer HD Blu-ray disc can hold up to 25GB of data, and a dual disc up to 50GB, 4K discs store 66GB and 100GB on dual. Easier to pack all the extras on the 4K discs.
I got the NO TIME TO DIE 3-DSIC COLLECTOR'S EDITION BLU-RAY + DVD + DIGITAL CODE. My parents got it for me for Christmas. I am excited to re-watch this movie and for the bonus features. Thanks for making this video, Calvin.
I Love physical media. Nothing like having a book, CD or Blu-ray in hand. I own both the four volume Bond DVD set from years ago and the 50 years Blu-ray set. Along with the Blu-rays of all the Craig era.
Great video, Calvin! I got the USA Steelbook of NTTD. Looks identical to the Zaavi one, except there's no glue for the paper attachment, and no bottom wrap-around. Still super annoying though haha. And indeed, the Steelbook is only a Best Buy Exclusive here in the states.
Here, States side, the Blu-Ray set is a 3-disc set. A Blu-Ray copy, a DVD copy, a Bonus feature disc, and a code for the digital download for mobile devices.
I miss proper film posters and bond had some of the best in the past Most films just seem to use a still nowadays anyway the film is surprisingly good better than spectre but no Skyfall Happy New year to you and your partner sir
I just got the blu-ray and in happy with it. Any chance you can do a video were you show off your physical media collection? Anyway, hope you have a great 2022
got the 4K edition just before Christmas. The film looks absolutely gorgeous, better than I expected. I also didn't realize the Being James Bond documentary was on there...lol I guess I was too excited over the actual film to pay attention to the other discs.
Calvin! This this gave me a few chuckles while watching. At least I feel like I'm not alone in owning more than one copy. In Montreal this Blu-ray was surprisingly difficult to find in store. Was getting annoyed. Stores did have it, but sold out of it very fast. I also had a rant with myself over people supposedly not buying phisical media anymore. Really?!! Here in Canada, a Walmart exclusive Blu-ray box set is available. Box is a lot like a hard cover book. Keychain also, but this one a Safin mask. It's beautiful really. Also, like yourself, I can't bring myself to toss away anything. I kept the backing card which is meant to be thrown away. 😂
After obtaining the extras by other means, I'm so glad I didn't buy these home releases as I'd originally planned to. You said it perfectly "extras aren't what they used to be".
Got the Wal-Mart exclusive with the Safin mask keychain. I looooooved it, but I do long for the days I had what felt like 2 to sometimes 4 WHOPPING hours of special features for each Bond adventure
Oh shoot I didn't release they'd released the discs already! Thanks for the heads up Calvin, now I have to figure out what's actually available here in Canada...
8:33 The fact that Calvin is missing Quantum of Solace in the Craig era row, as well as the fact that Never Say Never Again and Casino Royale '67 are included in the James Bond shelf sets off all kinds of pedantic Bond fan annoyances in me, haha. Anyway, doesn't look like the best array of bonus features, especially considering the film is probably quite interesting from a pre-production/behind the scenes standpoint. I'm actually quite surprised as there seems to be a lot about it online.
4:43 Not sure why Paloma is on there rather than M, Blofeld or Felix but whatever, that's hardly uncommon for Bond films [like Monica Bellucci's cameo being hyped] and at least she did something however minor! I remember they did some posters like that for Die Another Day, one featuring Miranda Frost in the outfit she's wearing for the the end fencing fight with Jinx for some reason!
Still torn as to which one to get! I do not have a separate 4k player just yet and have lately sadly been getting everything on digital - 4K whenever possible because I just find it more convenient and easier to just press a button instead of taking discs out and putting them in my PS 4 blue player. (I still have shelves and shelves full of DVDs and Blue Rays and I found that they mostly just sit there!) But for the Bond films - I completely agree with you! I have to have them on both physical AND digital or I don’t quite feel like I “ own” them! And besides I have bought each of them so many times ( regular VHS - letterbox VHS - DVD - Special edition DVD - Blu Ray - Box set blu ray - sd digital - Hd digital - 4K digital etc etc ) ..that buying them twice at once really doesn’t even seem like a big deal at all lol! Happy New Year Calvin!
I view physical media as works of art or artifacts. Plus it's still the only way to get bonus features aside from a few exceptions on Prime, iTunes, or Disney+ but those are rare occasions.
2 disc Bluray here. I agree completely about physical copies - baring burglary, flood or fire those copies I own of Carebears series 4, Duck Patrol, The Best of Les Dawson and of course Never Say Never Again are safe from being pulled from a streaming service on a whim. Plus having a sophisticated home cinema system helps - it is just like being in the cinema apart from the traffic, the "How much?!" when I buy a ticket and the rustling of sweet wrappers. The best part of having a film to own is being able to pause it for a pea when the film lasts longer than my bladder capacity.
Normally I'd get the fanciest version as well, but assuming there will be a will be a complete 25 film 4K release this year for the anniversary, so just got the regular UHD so I won't feel so bad when I inevitably upgrade.
How hard can it be to make a great cover/poster? Taking a picture of Craig and put it on the front is lazy. They have done this for years now. Isnt that a place to get people to pay attention and to sell the film? That poster with the other cast and some action on Craigs back is good, use that one! (Is that poster official or fan made?) And forcing people to buy 4K for exclusive features is not okay. The bonus features sounds great but i want more. I have to get the 4K version when it releases here. I dont like this film, but i can't have an incomplete set! Im also one of those who have a physical blu-ray collection.
Great video Calvin! BTS features are what I look for in my physical media and the older Bond films are great in that regard but I fear the studio are being too cautious with what the let out given how the film's pre-production got off to a rocky start. In comparison, David Fincher's films aren't afraid to show how some scenes were shot and then completely re-shot giving a 'warts and all' insight into how his films are made, and that would be great here given the wealth of stories there must be. Hopefully in a few years when there's a complete Daniel Craig boxset we might get a little more insight and that director's commentary.
Agreed. There are probably issues like Non-disclosure agreements [especially re-Danny Boyle] and the fact it's too 'raw' while people are more open with water under the bridge [which is partly why thoses 'inside' documentarys on the classic Bond's had so much info.
I got the regular No Time To Die Blu-Ray and the Daniel Craig Collection Blu-Ray set from Casino to Spectre. Don’t think there’s a Casino to NTTD set, but I’d be interested to see what that will be.
Yeah I keep the paper covers as well, Calvin. It just wouldn’t feel like a legitimate part of my collection without the age rating on. Funnily enough, the only time I’ve seen no expense spared and the BBFC certificate printed directly onto the steelbook was with the Matt Damon war film, _Green Zone_ - no paper sleeve at all.
I'm getting more and more disenchanted with blu-rays. I got the standard blu-ray for NTTD, and I'm kind of disappointed there weren't more extras. I remember when I was a kid, one of the bonuses of getting DVDs was they were usually packed with special features, and it seems nowadays whenever I buy a new blu-ray, more often than not I'm disappointed in the lack of bonus material.
Now that No Time To Die is out on DvD and Blue Ray, maybe MGM can make a new box set with all 25 Bond films? And maybe even throw in Never Say Never again and Casino Royale 1967, and maybe have bonus features including documenteries, deleted scenes and possibly Casino Royale 54'!
