Jan and Dean are a duet very similar to The Beach Boys from around the same time period. A couple of popular songs by them are Surf City and Deadman’s Curve. There is a real life tragedy that befell them early on in their career that was made into a tv movie titled Deadman’s Curve. I suggest Surf City as a first listen though. Much love and hugs robsquad family ❤ thank you The Robinson Five for being Angels among us and spreading love through music sharing and smiles! 😊

I love their early surf music, but when you get to their album "Pet Sounds", it's on a totally different level. The album influenced the making of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper album. "Wouldn't it be nice", "Sloop John B", and especially "God Only Knows", are good ones to try. Brian Wilson was the falsetto singing in this song. Brian Wilson: singer, songwriter, and record producer who co-founded the Beach Boys. Often called a genius for his novel approaches to pop composition, extraordinary musical aptitude, and mastery of recording techniques, he is widely acknowledged as one of the most innovative and significant songwriters of the 20th century. His best-known work is distinguished for its high production values, complex harmonies and orchestrations, layered vocals, and introspective or ingenuous themes. Wilson is also known for his formerly high-ranged singing and for his lifelong struggles with mental illness.

As the Beach Boys progressed a little further in their career, Brian Wilson was creating extremely advanced creative music with all types of instruments. The Beatles respected them bc of that, tremendously. The Beach Boys' “Pet Sounds" album inspired The Beatles' "Sgt Pepper" album. Listen to the Beach Boys song "GOOD VIBRATIONS". This is just one example (of many) of the musical genius songs of Brian Wilson. ❤

@@futurereflections4097 I know what you mean. I think his brothers, Carl and Dennis loved him. I didn't hear too much about Al Jardine's stance. As for more surf music, I def suggest you check out "Misirlou" by Dick Dale - the King of Surf Guitar. I'd be willing to bet you will recognize the tune - it's been used in several movies & tv commercials in some form or another. My late uncle graduated from high school in Bakersfield, CA (about 100 miles north of Los Angeles) at the end of that spring in 1963, and The Beach Boys were the band that played at his Senior Prom! 😲 Nowadays, it would be amazing enough to have a live band at the prom instead of a D.J. Thanks for getting back to The Beach Boys! Not sure if it has been mentioned, but the original Beach Boys were three brothers (Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson), a cousin (Mike Love) and a friend (Al Jardine). That is why the vocals have such a unique blend (like the brotherly harmonies of The Bee Gees), in addition to the brilliant harmony structures imagined by Brian Wilson. The Beach Boys were a heavy influence in the vocal structuring of early Huey Lewis & The News songs. HLN actually imitated a photograph from The Beach Boys Surfer Girl album, where they were all holding a surfboard. I think it was pictured on their first album, released in 1980. If you ever want to hear the true depth of The Beach Boys vocals, listen to the last half of the “Today” album and “Pet Sounds”. If you can find isolated vocal tracks, it will blow you away.

Couple of notes... That opening guitar riff was "borrowed" from one of Chuck Berry's songs, and the BBs got busted for it. Berry didn't fuss over it, so the BB got away with that one. One of the reasons why they sounded so much like the record on this video is that they were actually singing to the studio soundtrack which was done by the Wrecking Crew.... a group of superb studio musicians that has been mentioned quite often in your comments. Brian Wilson, the founder of the BB was considered a certified music genius by his peers in the industry. He built those songs note by note in his head, and was able to pull it all together in the studio. Those harmonies are specifically because Wilson was paying homage to the men's singing groups of the previous decade like the Four Freshmen.

They used this opening riff from Chuck Berry. Got into some trouble at first with Surfing USA because label didn’t give him writing credit at first. Those are the only songs using Berry riffs. The Beach Boys recorded this on their own. Perhaps a saxophone from Wrecking Crew. They performed this song all the time - only difference was they didn’t use keyboards in their early days. On the recording Brian Wilson did keyboards and I think Al Jardine played bass. The video was from a performance from March 1964 (can be seen online as “The Lost Concert”).

Two slightly different Beach Boys songs: 1. “Good Vibrations” was a masterpiece both musically and technically. The Beach Boys’ contemporaries were blown away by it. 2. Another one is “In My Room”. It was written by Brian Wilson when he had intense mental health problems and wouldn’t leave his room. We didn’t know the song’s inspiration for many years; we just loved it as a beautiful song.

I had always sort of dismissed The Beach Boys, except for Good Vibrations and Sloop John B, until I saw them live in about 1972. I still wasn't totally on board during the concert but everyone seemed to be having a good time listening to their old surf hits...and then they broke into Fun, Fun, Fun. The opening guitar hook instantly captivated the audience and by the end of the first verse, virtually the whole crowd was vibrating as one. It was an epiphany of sorts and I have become much more appreciative in the years since.

One of their best - my opinion. Great harmonies - as usual. Beginning in 1961 the group epitomized "the California sound" about cars, surfing and romance with some influences blending older pop vocal groups, some R&B and with lyrics focused towards adolescents. One of the few American groups that battled with "the British Invasion" groups . In the mid-60's their sound became more experimental. All told, they have sold over 100 million records worldwide, have had 37 tops 40 hits from mid-60's into 2020, with 4 #1 hits. The songs titled: California Girls" and "Surfin USA" and this song are probably their best known from the 60's. Went through some rough period in 70's and most of the 80's. In 1987 they recorded/released their last #1 hit - "Kokomo". They did some touring with Chicago during the 80's.

Lyrics: Well she got her daddy's car And she cruised through the hamburger stand now Seems she forgot all about the library Like she told her old man now And with the radio blasting Goes cruising just as fast as she can now Chorus: And she'll have fun fun fun 'Til her daddy takes the T-bird away (Fun fun fun 'til her daddy takes the T-bird away) Well the girls can't stand her 'Cause she walks, looks and drives like an ace now (You walk like an ace now, you walk like an ace) She makes the Indy 500 look like a Roman chariot race now (You look like an ace now, you look like an ace) A lotta guys try to catch her But she leads them on a wild goose chase now (You drive like an ace now, you drive like an ace) Well you knew all along That your dad was gettin' wise to you now (You shouldn't have lied now, you shouldn't have lied) And since he took your set of keys You've been thinking that your fun is all through now (You shouldn't have lied now, you shouldn't have lied) But you can come along with me 'Cause we gotta a lot of things to do now (You shouldn't have lied now, you shouldn't have lied And we'll have fun fun fun now that daddy took the T-bird away (Fun fun fun now that daddy took the T-bird away) etc etc

Brian combined the harmonies of 50’s groups like the Four Lads with the rock’n’roll of Chuck Berry, you might say. But his melodic sense is uniquely his own. He also spearheaded the popularity of surf music and car music in the 60’s. To realize that just a couple of years after “Fun Fun Fun” he was writing “Good Vibrations” is to realize what an extraordinary talent he was.

"When they harmonize, 5 voices become literally 1,". YES. And it is because they almost always sang into one microphone. Maybe not so much live, but definitely for every studio recording. By doing this, their voices blended naturally rather than via a soundboard or mixer. They also heard each other up close so often that they could balance each other near perfectly and not have any single voice stand out, even when they are each singing different parts. Their rendition of Auld Lang Syne is a great example of that blending over multiple different parts. In my mind, it is at least part of the definition of talent. There may be more to it than just that, but that is clearly talent at its best, and something that modern music has largely lost.

This was the very first Beach Boys song I memorized as a kid in the 90s. I love the story the song tells about this rebellious girl - and now that I work in a library I laugh when it talks about ditching the library "like she told her old man" LOL!

I love the Beach Boys, I suspect everyone does deep down. I'm 29, but everyone I know who has half decent taste rates them. The harmonies are just perfect and are the main attraction for me. But there's great songwriting and a lot of variety, from insanely catchy to a tearing up sort of nostalgic mood. My recommendations are "I can hear music" featuring amazing lead vocals and "Little St Nick" - the best Christmas song of all time. A song so catchy it probably has military applications 😂

One of my favourite groups. Really bouncy song this one with their great harmonies. There is a good version of this by Beach Boys with Status Quo. I was lucky enough to see them in 2012 on their 50 year celebration tour when they played for 3 hours overall and were fantastic. So many good songs , it is hard to name a favourite but especially like Breakaway, Sloop John B and I can hear music. Their sound is pretty unique, much of which owing to the genius of Brian Wilson. First UK hit was I think 'I get around' in 1964!

Sure, I love the goofy surfer music - but there is more to them than that! Even as a Northern California boy, the Beach Boys remind me so much of being a teenager and just driving around with friends in the summer having fun. But if you want to hear another side of them you should listen to "Surfer Girl", "Don't Worry Baby", or "The Warmth of the Sun". They show just how beautiful their songwriting and how sophisticated their harmonies can be.

The drummer was friends with the manson family and he told mike love that when he was with them he saw them kill a black man and it broke him inside and in 1983 he got drunk fell off a pier and died. Brian wilson battled drug addiction and was thrown out of the band in 1983 but is better now. And the other wilson brother died in the mid 90's of heart failure. Brian wilson and mike love wrote most of their music.

I always loved this song, and I remember hearing it when it was released in 1964. The opening was borrowed from Johnny B. Goode intro by Chuck Berry. The song was based on a girl in Salt Lake City who would borrow her Dad's 1963 Ford Thunderbird to "go to the library". Instead she would race around the city and go to a local hamburger stand. Her Dad found out, and would not let her use the car. A '63 Thunderbird weighed about 4,200 pounds, but had loads of power. The lowest horsepower engine for the car had 300 horsepower, and the most powerful engine available for the car was 425 horsepower, but for insurance reasons, that last figure is probably lower than what the engine could produce.

Family harmony. 3 brothers, a cousin, and a family friend. Brian Wilson on bass (who's also a genius songwriter and arranger), Carl Wilson on Rhythm guitar, cousin Mike Love on the lead vocal, Dennis Wilson on drums, and Al Jardine on lead guitar.
