In our Lenovo IdeaCentre Mini 5i review, we see how Lenovo quite literally flipped a ThinkCentre and made it less serviceable for "good" looks. Still, it is a great value.

Flipped chassis are the bane of USB-A orientation, same problem on the AsRock 4x4BOX systems. Amusingly the RJ-45 ends up the right orientation (pins on top to avoid dust settling) because they use a flipped connector and that detail has largely been lost to the ages regardless.

Many years ago I purchased a Mac Mini that was _way_ harder to service than this LeNovo boxen. When the hdd drive died, the “genius” at the Mac shop quoted $200 plus the cost of the replacement drive which was twice what I’d pay for the identical drive from my supplier. I didn’t have the proprietary Apple tool to open the case, but a paint scraper worked really well. I replaced the dead drive with one twice the size and much cheaper than the same Hitachi drive from Apple. It took me all of 20 minutes even though I’d never done it before. So, I figure I paid myself north of $10/minute for the work.

The reason they flipped the motherboard over and made a case just to make it "consumer-grade" is they sell a monitors that the Tiny slots into to make an all-in-one type device (Tiny-in-One). This way they can have the exact same port layout and use the same motherboard to build the thing, but still force you to pay more if you want to use it with one of their business-grade monitors

@RoastBeefSandwich

The case is certainly cheaper for them to manufacture as well I'm sure. But the difference in form factor is certainly so it is incompatible with the Think mounts, monitors, etc.

7 screws for full access on a consumer product isn't really bad at all, and considering you know that that hardware inside is the same milspec quality as in a Tiny, this is a pretty good value.

I think it kinda goes with new Lenovo design language, that's recycled plastic (greyish with different particles in) and that fabric with silver Lenovo logo... I think that's their way to go for consumer sustanability... ??
@edwardallenthree
@edwardallenthree 2 года назад
Exactly! And it is pretty disgusting that they added materials to make it look recycled. It's "green washing" at it's worst: make a product less reusable by making it harder to maintain, add materials that aren't needed, and then market it s environmentally sustainable. It's funny, but also a little evil.

BUT this version is for consumers and I bet someone said "Lets put fabric on it like the Amazon and Google assistant speackers have on them and people will buy them." Then I can see someone saying "Yeah and we can make it harder to take apart because you know a lot of consumers are lazy so they'll see that they have to pull it apart and un-screw it, and they'll just say "fuck it."

It looks like they dropped the HDD tray and replaced it with a PSU. It includes a 16 thread i5-13500H for $535. It’s the best price I’ve seen for any mini PC. They probably made it easier to open as well. I have a Brand new Lenovo idelcenter 5I Windows 11 22H2 Home Edition that is up to date. 16 m ram, i5-13500H it is very good, except, I tried to run a Microsoft Defender Antivirus scan (offline scan) and it asked for a recovery key. This should not be happening. yes, they are stored in my MS account for both the ideal Center comp and my yoga laptop. The point is home edition does not have bit locker , I can hit a skip button selection to complete the scan, but I should not have to type in 48 numbers. This does not happen on my yoga laptop. This should not be happening because Blitlocker should not exist in the Home edition of Windows, this is a common problem on Lenovo systems, it seems the factory image they use to load the PC's and laptops automatically enables Blitlocker in the Home edition. This bug needs to be resolved. Lenovo tech support says to turn off encryption, that is terrible solution.

I would have 3 things to day: it's a great box to hide behind your TV. for browsing and rare usage, it's a good choice, but there are much better ones on the market. that IF you want silence, power, gaming or anything else. For me, there are more things against than for, in this specific choice. a) intel culture of "work" since skylake is mostly binary, you get full power or idle, which means, power consumption and noise is ALWAYS there, unless you really just don't touch it. AMD does it much better in SFF, in last 2 gens AMD really leapfrogged intel in working culture in lower loads. If you want a tiny ps5 replacement steam box as well, AMD beats intel soundly. b) that brick breaks whole 1L thing. You literally have a brick that is ~50% of the size of the whole system, and its only replaceable by OEM parts that are similarly sized. I personally throw those almost instantly and pick USB-C GAN chargers, they are like 30% of the size of standard brick with same power, which makes a world of a difference with 1L SFF and tiny laptops. ASUS is king of this, as he gives you 1.1KG laptop and ~1KG brick to go with it. If you compare it to Anker nano II 30W that I picked for that laptop which is 61 grams (+cable) difference you have to carry with you is mind-blowing. Here is another gain from AMD, they don't use 80W under load, and 30W charger would go just fine, even under load.

@@ServeTheHomeVideo I'm well aware of those videos. I guess I simply disagree that having to remove 7 screws classifies something as less serviceable. Those screws and panels add to the strength of the chassis. Since the outside is plastic and fabric, it would be very weak without that metal reinforcement. If they didn't have that extra metal and it was flimsy, you probably would have complained about the "poor build quality". Honestly, I prefer screws instead of only plastic clips that will break.
