I was particularly impressed at 12:33, seeing adjustments made, details checked and verified, etc. Staying ahead of things as good pilots and co-pilots do. Details DO matter !
I’ve only been flying, including years as a test pilot, for about 60 years and until this video a squat switch was a weight on wheels (NASA called it a WOW signal) indication to prevent premature gear retraction with separate gear up and down switches to indicate gear up or down and locked. Of course I also remember‘position and hold’. Not sure why the FAA thinks ‘line up and wait’ is better. I do like your videos.
Yes your so right and I to remember‘position and hold’ in their (FAA) defense all of Europe and Canada used line up and wait and to many pilot’s coming from overseas would get confused so they (FAA) changed it so everyone was on the same page. But I still slip and say position and hold then correct myself
As a former flight attendant, it's true with the diet coke. I'd usually just give passengers the entire can rather than wait for the fizz to die down especially if it was a short flight.
Love your videos and adventures throughout our lovely state (St. Pete here).I do have a small terminology correction about the squat switch though. The squat switch aka a WOW (Weight On Wheels) switch is a switch that activates when the weight of the aircraft is resting or "squatting" fully on the MLG (and maybe the NLG in some cases, depending on MFG). The squat switch is basically an AIR /Ground Logic for the the aircraft, better yet, the systems (RAD ALT, TCAS, GPWS, XPNDR, if configured) that go to a standby "STBY" mode while on the ground and to an operational or "ON" mode in the air (probably found on your other ride as opposed to your private ride)... The UP LOCK switch is for the gear up and locked and a down lock switch for gear down and locked. When either one of those two switches are not made, the gear is considered "UNSAFE" and is pretty much the indication that the landing gear is "IN TRANSIT"... I hope that clarifies the difference. Terminology in maintenance is just as important as it is in ATC comms....
As a longtime Beechcraft maintenance tech the sqt switches are on the main ldg struts the up & down limit switches are under the spar cover at the landing gear gearbox they Stop the travel with a reverse current to the gear motor on the gearbox. I've rigged so many over the years!
My wife does that to me in the car and it scares the living crap out of me, I couldn't imagine hearing that while holding short at a runway holy crap!!!
Yes, I saw that smile, when Kim said bye, no need to complain 😉 Thank you for taking us along. Great flying Kris. Those cloud layers were much fun flying through, can't get enough of those views. Many greetings from EDKB Germany, which has some Florida summer thunderstorm weather too atm.
I know you have that big disclaimer about the video not being for instruction, but I, as a non-pilot, have learned so much from listening to your explanations to Kim. Thank you!
Same thing happened to me on the yelling thing with wife and she is real good doing that in the car when she sees shiny things! Kim your skill work is coming along just fine.
When I was learning to fly in the mid-1970's, I would pull the 1968 Mustang fastback up under the wing, open the doors and crank the monaural radio. It was just breaking light on the horizon, I would begin pre-flighting the plane, and more often than not, Charlie Daniels would be playing "Saddle Tramp". Great memories. Thanks.
I'm calmly relaxing and getting my BP fix. The faint sounds of springtime birds can be heard in my living room, along with the occasional snores from the napping cat in my lap and dog at my feet. Then, @ 3:49... "WHOH, WAIT, WAIT, WAIT !!!..." scaring the hell out of me, causing me to drop my tablet, spill my drink on the cat, who leaped on the dog, who chased said cat up the curtains, knocking over the end table in the process. I should mention that cats use claws when launching as well. But, I'll fix the table and get medical care and stitches on my leg. I always hated those curtains anyway, so it's all good. Great video !
It was nice meeting you two at Sun n Fun. Until I met you in person, I had not noticed that you were both vertically challenged! It helps because I have to recline my A36’s seat back in turbulence to lessen my chances of a painful head strikes on the ceiling!
Actually, a "squat" switch is typically a weight on wheels sensor. Airliners use them to trip some of the systems between a ground or flight mode, like engine idle. Smaller aircraft can use a squat switch to prevent the gear system from being able to raise the gear, while there is weight on wheels. The uplock and downlock switches report gear position.
When the voice raised I thought the door opened or the window fell out again..Kris you were a little whackey with the "Blinded me with science "reference..lol ...funny thing is that song crossed my mind too...lol..Great video..Take care you too.. Hot Pink looks good on you Kim ...next time let's not let it be a cast lol.
Great vid as usual and love the banter between you both, but yep I sat up when she yelled lol. There was a part just as a commercial cut in when I thought she was going to give you a slap Grin. Being a bloke I did enjoy her scratching lol
We walked right past you guys at sun n fun... I was trying to shout out 3175whiskey but by the time I thought to spit it out we were a ways from each other lol..
So actually, a squat switch is a switch located at one of the main landing gear that switches when the weight of the airplane compresses the strut. The gear up and gear down indicating switches (one on each gear) are not squat switches.
The only yelling permitted is what you do behind closed doors. Your body language was priceless pre departure on a very long hold short of runway. Thanks for sharing. Your vids are still in my top 5 go to's.
My wife does that when we're driving sometimes - freaks me out, since I think a semi is barreling towards us, lol. It's startling! But I sensed that Kim was joking around, so I didn't get that same startle factor here. All good! :D I had to watch this in 360p. Modem died, waiting for its arrival tomorrow. I couldn't hardly see your instruments even zoomed in! 1st world problems, lol.
I took my Mom flying right after I got my PPL and told here we would do a few touch and goes. I didn't explain what a Touch and go was though and she has a bad tendency to scream when startled . When I applied full power after we landed she freaked out and screamed like she was being killed. Scared the CRAP out of me!
Another enjoyable video thank you. Was so happy to see you both at Sun& Fun. and saw Kim's something on Kim's arm but thought it was just a different brace from the one she had been wearing. So sorry you broke your Radius bone. Ouch! Hope it's healing well and that the cast is off soon! Best regards..Moose!
Fantastic you are cleared to my town Melbourne !! Oh wait a minute cleared to MLB, not MEL. What's the difference? About 8500 nm - might need a fuel stop or 10. PS Clean that windshield!!!
Fun flight, nice landing. Thanks for sharing. Would appreciate viewing more steady and clearer shots of your side of the panel, plus your Aspen PFD. Kimmie’s side of the panel views are fine.
