Noach - “Noah” / Lech Lecha - “Go Forth”
Genesis 6:9-11:32 / 12:1-17:27
God instructs Noah, the only righteous man in a world consumed by violence and corruption, to build a large wooden ark, coated inside and out with pitch. Noah is told that a great deluge will wipe out all life from the earth, but that the ark will float upon the water above the destruction, sheltering Noah, his family and pairs of each animal (one pair of the unclean animals and seven of the clean animals), so that creation may begin again.
After the flood, he descendants of Noah remain a single people, with a single language and culture, for ten generations, after which they once again defy God by building a great tower to symbolise their own perceived greatness. YAH confuses their language so that they cannot understand one another, causing them to abandon this profane project and disperse across the face of the earth.
In Lech Lecha we are introduced to Abram, a man whom God calls out of the world to go to a land which is promised to him and his descendants as an eternal inheritance. Joined by his wife Sarai and nephew Lot, they go to the land of Canaan.
After a brief-time in Egypt due to a famine, Lot separates from Abram and settles in the city of Sodom, but is taken captive when a war begins between several kings, but Abram sets out with a small band of trained men to rescue him. After the battle is over the king of Salem, Melchizedek, joins Abram with bread and wine and makes an offering to God.
God then seals His promises through an ancient covenantal ritual, following which Sarah gives her maidservant Hagar to Abram in an attempt to bring forth a child, who gives birth to Ishmael. Thirteen years later their names are changed by God and Isaac is promised to them. Finally, Abraham is commanded by God to circumcise himself and all of the males in his household, as a sign of the covenant.
