Noam Chomsky and Susan Neiman: Black Lives Matter, Universalism and Hopes for the Left

The international protests unleashed by the police murder of yet another African American George Floyd have few parallels in recent memory. What are the differences between these and earlier protests? What ideas motivate the very diverse activists? What are the tensions between identity politics and universalism and does the present moment offer chances for reconciling them? How can we use this moment to work for substantive lasting change?
Chair: Thomas Meaney
Noam Chomsky is Institute Professor & Professor of Linguistics emeritus at MIT. His latest book is Requiem for the American Dream: The 10 Principles of Concentration of Wealth & Power (2017).
Susan Neiman is Director of the Einstein Forum. Her latest book is Learning from the Germans. Race and the Memory of Evil (2019)
Thomas Meaney-writer journalist and historian-is a former Einstein Fellow.

Professor Noam Chomsky, a universal intellectual and my brother, who professes the truth to the people of the mind, who gives vision to others to know the reality of the evil powers of evl politicans and their evil avarice for world domination. All my respects and my profound gratitude to you Sir Noam Chomsky.

Western universalism comes from Judeo-Christian religion. Without it, or conversion to Islam, the universalism will turn it narrow parochialism of Hindus or Chinese or Japanese. Chomsky will never accept it as he is an atheist.

Anatoly Kasparov Omitting the fact that his motive is not to vote for but to vote against. Policy wise, Trump is inferior to Biden on the basis of science alone, which is an essential for survival. Fact! However, electoral politics alone are lacking in actual change but it’s a start and it won’t start with Trump; possibly with Biden, but never with Trump. Trump has his foot on the pedal intensely on accelerating human extinction while Biden would lift his foot off the pedal, and that would give breathing room for organized movements to capitalize on.

@@VictorGarcia-xq5qu You sound like a brainwashed robot. You want Biden, because you want to live from tax payer's money with "mama" Washington taken care of filling in your pockets with socialist BS. Guess what. Your beloved Biden works for the Big Corpo! Anatoly Kasparov implying that corporations were not living off the public subsidies in the last 40 years. In addition, implying that tax subsidies or the “nanny state” is socialism. Judging from the fact that you made mention of Chomsky as a Bolshevik somewhere in the comment section when there is ample evidence he is against that strain of political ideology but I digress for you are not earnest in making honest but fabricated claims you have no evidence for. Political etymology and semantics of socialism is a prerequisite for continuing such discussion in order to not make things confusing for you as they already are, unfortunately. As for Biden, judging from your comments once again, it makes it seem as though you barely came to the realization of Biden being a corporate shill in the capitalist gang bang circle jerk of the elite, and you share this information in hope that people who already know don’t want to vote for him because of what reason you do not provide that isn’t voting for third party or some petty “protest” vote. The logic for not voting for Trump is pretty sound with ample evidence that Trump will reverse any effects the public demands in order to enrich his constituency. A practical approach is pressuring Biden, assuming he won the vote, to improve on his stance through organized movement in which it’s possible and it has happened before under Nixon, Reagan, etc. in which pushes leaders to the direction of public demand. But of course you already knew this before hand and you are not convinced of the ramifications on educated and organized movements towards implementing change so I ask what do you propose that is outside of electoral politics?

I watched TD Jakes last night on TBN and it was BLM again and I had enough of that topic for awhile, especially when I heard TD (one of my favorite Pastors in my Church days) saying how he never felt as wonderful in all his life as he did when he saw all the white folks support BLM: I said "WHAT"?? Better than you feel being a Pastor and one with the LORD? I was then ready to turn off for sure but I kept listening and I saw TD fall apart, literally fall apart. He was so weepy and I felt compassion and tried to understand what is going on? He explained how some of the black people were harassing, saying he sold out and how it upset him, till he too decided to KEEP LISTENING. He knew he was raised on a very poor neighborhood, and his mama had to kill the chickens to make dinner and there was no AC or heat etc, so he knew the poverty etc of the black community. Yet he said he heard a different kind of cry. The constant endangerment for the children who didn't ask to be born into drugs, violence, fear of Police, feeling less than.........and then he seemed to almost weep openly and my daughter said he never knew that he felt less than till BLM. It is the black people who are just now realizing that they felt less than and this is what needs to change. Their own identity of themselves: We know as women who hate our bodies at times if they are not perfect that we don't want to admit these things until someone else says it and then we feel relief and we are like, yes, I don't want to feel like this anymore. It is for any kind of lack in our lives: We don't even know we feel it till someone points it out and gives us permission to address it and heal. CHRIST WILL HEAL if we first see what needs to be healed so this is the only reason we need to be patient with this movement. The black community needs to heal and I THINK THEY FINALLY GOT THE PERMISSION THEY NEEDED.

We had the 50's Propaganda of the wholesome 'Apple Pie' Family. And back in the 70's we had the 'Midland Wives' propaganda. Anything that tries to assuage power away from another person WITHOUT equal representation basically conforms to someone's 'perception' of a Nietzschean struggle to power. Nietzschean philosophy really doesn't have much to do with the Roman Catholic Church, although some 'catholic radicals' would claim otherwise. Not all things can be defined as a Will to Power. I am reminded of George Orwell's book 1984 But what impressed me then, and has impressed me ever since, is that atrocities are believed in or disbelieved in solely on grounds of political predilection. Everyone believes in the atrocities of the enemy and disbelieves in those of his own side, without ever bothering to examine the evidence. George Orwell In this regard, good and evil were merely subjective toward each other’s cultural self-interest, degrading toward a great moral relativism. I think Friedrich Nietzsche was partially right when he suggested we search beyond the borders of “Good and Evil”. In many ways his brilliance bordered on the ethereal. But his ethereal brilliance was not enough. The ethereal becomes ephemeral when you transverse without faith in God. Nietzsche loved Dostoevsky so there may be hope yet. Nietzsche’s unbelief may have contributed to his nervous breakdown. And his lack of faith may have resulted in no support when he brilliantly pulled away the illusions of all philosophy. Unlike Nietzsche, I would be led by the Spirit to say it is time to, “Let our souls magnify the Lord” -- and realize there are no borders, especially when we blow into the sails of another's boat. We don’t believe in God. God believes in us. As we are divinized, God literally indwells our soul and believes on our behalf by the indwelling of the Holy Ghost. ❤

Discrimination is not a value. It can be based on presumptions, ego bigotry. Otherwise it is an important instrument for discretion and the protection of what is precious. Racism, which is the belief in human races, is the least important thing in the world. Making something important is to feed it. Indeed, bigotry and hostility between ethnic groups is escalating, LONG before even Obama was in office Mr. Chompsky. The results of a campaign allow us to perceive it's actual rather than declared aims. The Anti-racists believe in and promote the idea of human races, and the idea of inherited racial guilt. Thats feudalism, a deeply regressive and profoundly moronic social construct. Everyone is biased for one reason or another. So what. The reasons for the bias are what matters. George Floyd died of a Fentenol overdose. Kneeling on the lower cervical spine is a standard police restraining technique. A few blocks away, a young white man died with an officer kneeling on his neck THE SAME DAY. No riots or murals in his name I see. During the ensuing riots, hundreds of people were seriously injured or killed and nearly 200 police were murdered. whole neighbourhoods were burnt to the ground, permanently destroying those areas of the city. White people were coerced into KNEELING before black people. A frankly revolting and overt demonstration of outright RACISM. This gives you two hope?! You have to have some marbles loose. Documented police interaction show black people kill each other in the US at rates orders of magnitude greater than in altercations with the police, who are very often black themselves. Black people CALL the police into action in their neighbourhoods to intervene when they witness a crime. The activists ( who are mostly WHITE btw) are denying other black people protection under the law. Robberies, rapes and murders are now even more common in black neighbourhoods as a result. Bravo!

How does BLM challenge the structure of neoliberal economic orthodoxy????
@aspergianheteroclite3014
@aspergianheteroclite3014 4 года назад
@@zo7096 All that is true and I do support BLM but I don't support the exotic theories that underscore the movements. I don't think protesters outside of the academic arena would be that much aware of it. The basis on which these identity movements are based on are foundationless postmodern ideas, which, at it's core (unlike classical left-wing movements) perceive all world phenomena as a series of free-flowing narratives which reject the striving for truth and hope in universal solutions. It is particularistic and The reactionary extremes of this thinking are pretty regressive, particularly when you have a segments of it that outrightly oppose science as inherently imperialistic and part of a regime of truth. Such examples are at a university seminar in Africa in which the speaker argued to revive a mystical belief of a local village because science is just a belief (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C9SiRNibD14.html) It completely alienates me from it & emboldens the right-wing authoritarians & fascists because it provides them with a nice big target. In fact, the reason people conceive the world in terms of hyper-subjective narratives is one of the reasons why fake news is so widespread. We have collectively accepted truth doesn't matter, nevermind the attempting to strive to hopefully establish a solution which is universally beneficial in broadening the scope of freedom.
@aspergianheteroclite3014
@aspergianheteroclite3014 4 года назад
@@zo7096 I do understand it and agree with everything you're saying. The only thing I disagree with is the postmodern turn that has been underlying most social movements for the past few decades among academics, something which Chomsky & others on the left have exposed by the way, not merely gullible followers of Jordan Peterson's reactionary spiel. Stop trying to turn my disagreements with postmodernism into somehow likening BLM to neonazi right wing racist group. It's insulting to even accuse of me of that. I support defunding the police and acknowledge that racial and other inequalities must be tackled in order to challenge capitalism but I'm still sceptical of whether it is challenging neoliberal capitalism. I'm sceptical of whether it is adequately tackling, challenging and dispelling the economic arguments that right-wing leaders like Trump use to justify scapegoating foreigners & others for example. That's one of the main reasons Trump retains his support base, as well as demonising the recent pulling down of statue, which while symbolically significant I think have not done anything to challenge neoliberal economic doctrine and have more or less been handed as a gift on a silver platter for Trump to attack as an opportunity to maintain power. Also you have Trump supporters painting over the Black Lives Matter street lettering in Washington because of their reactionary claim that police brutality is a "liberal narrative", it illustrates the unfortunate direction of viewing everything through the postmodern lens of extreme relativism and narrative spinning whereby facts are considered perspectival, thus anti-humanism prevails. You might be thinking, why should I care about these people? Yet it's important to know why they are thinking what they are thinking in order to attempt to counter the rhetoric that's been served to them. Chomsky has argued that one form of identity politics cannot seek to dominate other kinds which I agree. He says they have to be mutually supportive and be integrated into broader issues related to class, something that has been consciously suppressed and driven out of people's heads. I believe that has been pretty much missing in BLM, with the exception of defund police insofar as defund police means channel the money used for police surveillance and barbarity into public services for the community.

Alonso “state run violence toward white and European Americans isn’t tolerated” this is false. More white Americans are killed by police than black Americans. For every instance you see of a person of color being killed by the police you can find an identical instance of the same thing happening to a white person ie.Tony Timpa, Daniel Schaefer. While Black Americans are killed disproportionally to whites there is a figure that doesn’t get looked at much which is that if you are poor you are 2.5 times more likely to have an encounter with the police. In my opinion this highlights the two real issues in regards to all of this. Police militarization and poverty both of which I see are issues of the larger community as a whole and become counter productive when they are over simplified to a matter of race.

Having listened to Prof. Chomsky, and appreciating his decades’ long fight against war mongering, his sharp eye for corruption, and his willingness to criticize those who would wield power over others in ways inimical to those others’ interests, I cannot but be disappointed in his blind spots about, most notably, Cuba. His statements that Cuba is the most free country in the world, that is the most internationalist of countries, amaze me. Has he never read Armando Valladares about his years in the Cuban “Gulag”, or the reports detailing the political prisoners held to this day in Cuba, or the stories of the hardships faced by thousands fleeing Cuba by boat? I am a Canadian, and I support my government’s opening to Cuba, but let’s not pretend that Castro created a wonderful system. Prof. Chomsky devalues the nature of his insights by refusing to acknowledge the inhumanity and corruption in countries like Cuba, Iran, and Bolivia under Morales. I agree that great things were done in Cuba and Bolivia, but not to recognize the appalling behaviour of the governments in those countries reduces Prof. Chomsky to the level of his opponents in America. They promote a narcissistic and corrupt leader in America, even as Prof. Chomsky acts as a shil for the equally indefensible behaviour of his favourite despots.

Chomsky repeatedly talked about racism/structural racism with regards to what BLM was fighting for; Yet, he did not provide a single argument as to how George Floyd’s death, or any other cause BLM is fighting for ... has to do with racism in current American society. He also did not provide a single example of structural racism. Yes, historical racism plays a huge factor in these kinds of issues and the residual effects of historical racism and how it has shaped the experience of Black Americans in our current society cannot be overlooked. However, to say that something like George Floyd’s death is evidence of racism of any kind - is nonsensical. There is absolutely no logic in that claim. First, according to all the evidence I have seen, when you equate statistics - black people are not more likely to be killed by cops than white people. In fact - White people are more likely to be killed by cops than black people. Now maybe those studies are not accurate, maybe they’re a total fabrication, and I’m not even saying they aren’t; but still - even if black people were 1,000 times more likely to be killed by cops - that still is not evidence of current racism. This is a fact that people do not seem to understand. If a cop unjustifiably kills an unarmed gay man - it doesn’t prove he is homophobic ... it proves he shouldn’t have been a cop. The problem is that the media does not report when unarmed white men are killed by police. Not long ago, there was a white man that was literally beaten to death by a group of cops, and the cops were cleared of any wrongdoing. Does anyone reading this know the name of the man that was killed? Does anybody ever talk about that case? If Rodney King was one of the worst cases of police misconduct, then how is this case involving a white man not worse - when the white man that was beaten-died? Yes, we absolutely need serious changes that deal with police misconduct, and we absolutely need to find a way to rectify the problems Black Americans face because of the grotesque ways they were treated throughout history. But we need to be precise with our claims, we need to be focusing on the right things, and we need to speak honestly about what is happening in our society if we are going to figure out solutions to our problems.

Great post and not surprising that you didn’t get any replies because people here can’t answer. There is still not a single shred of evidence that racism had anything to do with George Floyd’s death. And yes, the stats completely debunk most of BLMs claims Honestly I think BLM has caused more problems than they have fixed. I’m sure there are cases of ‘systemic racism’ but activists have stretched out the definition to basically mean every disparity equals racism. It’s only completely muddied the water making it almost impossible to discuss

. It all started 2000 years ago That’s when a philosophy came into the world. Three hundred years later, the rulers of the Roman Empire recognized that the subservience of this philosophy made it easier to control their people. On 27 March 380, it was therefore made the state religion. Later this religion would be called Christianity. Symbolic seed capital of their state religion: 1 US-Dollar. . Subservience is also the guarantee that subsequently nobody will dare touching this capital that will be continuously increasing in the future. And Christians have been arming themselves against the unbelievers. Today more than ever before. The unbelievers are also arming themselves, out of self-defense. . And then, the Roman Empire collapsed. But only the Empire collapsed, not the capital of its religion. This capital is preserved. Later it is taken over by the “Holy Roman Empire” that considers itself as the successor of the Roman Empire. However, this Empire also collapsed, while the capital of its religion is preserved. Parts of the Roman Empire as well as the Holy Roman Empire were merged with their religion already before their collapse, and their capital was therefore also preserved in their religion. And over time, it became the largest empire of all times. . How large is the capital of the largest empire of all times today, and who owns it? capitalocene.com .
