I'm having a blast discovering music from Final Fantasy 8 in this channel. Today we're listening to the FF8 final boss theme The Extreme. I didn't know this game had some of the best boss music in the series, but then again, what else would you expect from Nobuo Uematsu!

I REALLY love that you pointed out the fact that on the second part of the theme Nobuo started with one of the signature intro he uses for almost every battle theme. As if he was saying "you might feel desperate at first, but don't be afraid, you shall fight this battle like any other, you know what to do". It's perfectly aligned with the central thematic of self-confidence and courage through out the character of Squall in this episode VIII.

So... At this point in the game, the main villain has essentially accomplished all they want to do. Reality itself is at the edge of destruction, with the main villain absorbing all of time and space into herself. This means that in a way, she *is* all of reality. This is why the sound keeps panning from left and right and back; the boss is quite literally all around you (even her model is so large that it warps around the party rather than just being in front of them), and you pretty much have already lost. Just to drive this point home, the first thing the final boss does is to set your entire party's HP to 1. However, this isn't the only reason why the music starts so sad; for as evil and malevolent the villain is, she's also very tragic, and she herself only did what she did out of despair. But that's not the end of it. This is a JRPG, and we are the heroes! We're going to save the world, the universe! The 'heroic' part of the music is timed to kick in shortly after your HP is set to 1, and probably roughly around the time you healed yourself up and are going on the counteroffensive. As for the 'odd time signatures' and key changes in general, well, again, the boss is absorbing time and space itself into herself, and is fought in an otherwise completely empty void. There is nothing stable around you, no floor, no stars, nothing. The only way you can hold yourself together at this point is pure willpower, and as such the music is both frantic and chaotic, yet also filled with determination (no, not the all-caps kind) and heroism.

Ultimecia had a reason for doing stuff? I remember in the first Dissidia game she had a unique item that implied some trauma or loss but... See, someone told me once that there actually is a backstory behind everything that happened in FF8, something about some goddess(?) and her dead knight? But since I didn't 100% the game and Ulti herself only has like... three lines in the whole game, I got to the end extremely confused about what was happening and just enjoyed all the wacky spectacle.
@neobullseye1
@neobullseye1 8 месяцев назад
@@Sticksnstones77 First of all, keep in mind that everything a certain character in Discs 1 and 2 says is actually Ultimecia talking (I'm not naming that character to avoid spoilers for third people, but to anyone who has played the game, it should be obvious who that person is). Ultimecia has plenty of dialogue, it's just not obvious it's her at first. Anyway, short version, the entire game is one giant self-fulfilling prophecy. On Ultimecia's side, she is from a future where sorceresses are actively being hunted town and prosecuted. In response, she tries to do all the things she does in the game in an attempt to create a world where she and only she can survive (while it technically also allows her to rule this new world, it's a bit pointless to 'rule' over a world where nothing else can even exist). The problem is that this very action is what led to her prosecution in the first place; the combination of multiple Sorceresses trying to take over the world coupled with one that wants to destroy all of reality let to humanity becoming a lot more pro-active about things. Add in weird time travel shenanigans, and you end up with a villain who is a victim of both her own machinations and the way this universe works. The rest of the game follows similar logic. Squall's victory over Ultimecia and the subsequent events are what set his own past events in motion, and ultimately guarantees Ultimecia's defeat. FF8 is full of things like this: Ellone attempts to send people's minds into the past in an attempt to change the past, only to cause these very same events to fold out in the same fashion. Ultimecia tried to change the past to save herself, only to cause her own defeat. And since every point in time is the 'past' from a later point in time, it follows that you cannot change the future either. Ultimecia *will* rise and she *will* cause massive amounts of destruction, and nothing can possibly change this. In short, everyone in the entire game's universe is a victim of fate, forced to do those things they were destined to do.

@Arxane
@Arxane 8 месяцев назад
As someone who played FF8 a few years ago, I can answer why some people like myself don’t like the game. The junction system is certainly unique, but it incentives a kind of grinding that isn’t fun. Other FF games encourage grinding, sure, but at least you get the rewarding feeling of your character growing stronger with each level attained. The junction system, meanwhile, forces you to draw literally hundreds of magic spells from monsters to increase the stats of every party member, and at the same time incentivizes players to keep their level low to keep monsters from leveling up as well. So you have a game where leveling your characters with experience can hurt you, and the only way to really increase your stats is a boring play loop of drawing magic over and over and over while choosing to never actually use that magic because using it decreases characters stats and…ugh, it’s a mess of a system that sounds good in theory but doesn’t work in practice. As for the story…it’s not my cup of tea, but I don’t hate it as much as some people do. I do admit the whole group amnesia plot point was incredibly stupid, but I’ve seen worse story beats in other games. If you want to see true hatred for FF8, hunt down Spoony’s old review of the game…and even he took back all his criticisms because he found FF13 much, much worse in every regard.
@AmeliaPond.
@AmeliaPond. 8 месяцев назад
@@Arxane Those are fair points. But I have felt that grind frustration with all the FF games. FF6 comes to mind the OG before the fixed the grinding need. You would spend hours and hours grinding to be able to fight and not die in certain areas. And junction system could have been better but it wasn’t a game changer for me. I still loved the game, and everyone has different ideas of what they want or like in a game. Thanks for your input.

@@ArxaneThe trick to FF8 is you DONT grind. It's the only FF that rewards you for thinking outside the box and playing pacifist. Turn the monsters into cards instead of killing them and mod the cards instead of drawing magic from them.

To this day, The Extreme is my favorite FF boss track hands down. Nothing comes close for me. Granted this was my first FF and i was a wee 3rd grader, so it thoroughly blew my mind lol. The way the music swirls around your head when you have headphones on-OOH!! Goosebumps. :D Edit: I'd like to add, and I totally over thinking this, but I always felt the distinct straight 4's on the high hat/beat felt like a ticking from a clock. And it rapidly speeds up into the climax. Time is a HUGE part of FF8's story, and to me it felt like Ultemicia is trying to manipulate time in this battle.

Final Fantasy 8 has many flaws but composition isn't one of them. The leitmotif for the witches is such a beautifully haunting melody that makes for some absolutely memorable scenes whenever it is heard. The time compression theme when the party travels to the distant future embodies time in a way that both relaxes and unnerves. Eyes on me is a lovely solo (even if the English lyrics are a little odd). Oh yeah, and the battle music kicks ass. The first time you hear Man with the Machine Gun you're like, "I don't know why everyone fell asleep or why I'm these soldiers now, but this song bops."

This one and Dancing Mad are my favorite final boss themes in the series. I prefer themes that mostly sound disturbing and sad for the final boss. The first examples that made me like this kind of final boss themes are the "Final Cackletta" theme from Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga and the Elder Shroob battle theme from Mario & Luigi Partners in time (that one sounds SO creepy), both of which were composed by Yoko Shimomura. You really are missing out, not playing Final Fantasy VIII. Yes, the Junction System is rather divisive (although it's bloody easy to understand if you actually pay attention to what the game is saying), and I'll admit the romance elements aren't to everyone's taste (I definitely take it over Cloud's and Tifa's codependent "relationship" or the awkward tragicomedy that is Tidus' and Yuna's, though), but it's an absolutely amazing ride, and a big part of it is the music. "The Extreme" is just a small sample of Uematsu's genius when it comes to weaving music into the game itself, and while many other Final Fantasy games can boast similar feats I believe that VIII is his greatest example. I'm really glad that you enjoyed this song, and I hope you'll at least take the opportunity to check out the entire soundtrack in the future - if not the game itself.

8 had a lot of metal attitude on top of the regular teen angst. It had a heavy plot of sorrow and tragedy over the standard sadness. You’re never really rooting against the “enemy” in the same way as you do the common villain. There isn’t some monster mutate ultimate weapon excuse to make them fully evil unhuman. It’s just like the mistakes of people destined to their universal human error, and the price of power. Of course ubermagics turn it to a fight for all reality as usual, but it’s as much a “wish we could have saved you” vs “now it’s time to destroy you once and for all”. And the paradox nature of self fulfilling time travel maybe also makes it even more bittersweet.

Sakuraba is a good composer that makes music for a number of niche RPG Serials, such as Golden Sun, Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile and the like. However, probably the most interesting thing is when you take into account another composer's work, Noriyuki Iwadare, who does some of the remix music for Sakuraba's work on the modern titles for said serials. I'd also like to see your reaction to Tsuyoshi Sekito, who does the remixed/re-arranged music for remasters of Chrono Trigger (for the FMVs) and is in the group "The Black Mages." I've always been interested in composers who do faithful recreations like those, and it's interesting to see how well they recreate the style in their own way.

Those of you who've played the game, did you know that the English localization ended up cutting out a lot of Ultimecia's dialogue? Most of it is minor, but her final monologue during her fight is particularly significant in the Japanese version. Here it is: “Have you remembered something? Something from your childhood A sensation The words from back then The emotions from back then As you become an adult You leave something behind, throw something away Time will not wait for you Even if you cling to it It slips away the instant you open your hands And…” I've read that the themes of the game are about impermanence and loss of childhood and loved ones. Everything ends, but Ultimecia could never bring herself to accept that. She fought till the end to assert her existence, but such a goal can only end in failure, much the same as how we can never return to our childhoods. This song captures a wide range of emotions remarkably well. The patron who requested this track has excellent taste.

Yeah, her speech to the masses in Deling is one of those things localization ruined. Its arguably the greatest piece of dialogue in the entire series.

There's something about this track that makes me go back and forth losing myself in every individual melody of the song, and I can't help but bounce between paying attention to each of them and I dont know which I want to stay on................. and then still, I'll jump back to paying attention to the whole, only to feel that it's greater than it's parts. It's incredibly climactic to me. FF VIII is filled with tracks that make you "feel" something without a single word. One of the tracks that absolutely makes me lose myself feeling something I can't explain is "Silence and Motion". And I don't know what I feel, but I know I lose myself in it. It's not a very good one for a video though. I wholeheartedly believe FF VIII is peak Uematsu. And if there's one man and a soundtrack that, without exaggeration, makes me feel sad - for not having any musical training - it is this guy and this OST.

The choral 'fithos lusec wecos vinosec' 4:28 is an anagram of 'succession of witches' with four letters left over, l-o-v-e. Uematsu often put little puzzles in his music, like the song of prayer from ffx.

The hymn of the fayth prayer makes no sense until you write the lyrics down and read them vertically, it's in Japanese.

And this, dear friends, is the mastermind genius that is Nobou Uematsu. Ever since he stopped composing the amazingly great Final Fantasy Soundtracks, that day Final Fantasy unfortunately lost a lot of it's magic. Also about the chorus phrase: "Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec" It's supposed to be an anagram that contains the games two foremost topics: "Succession of Witches" and the letters that still remain unused form "Love".

wow the timing, i just restarted playing FF8 after giving up a handful of times cause i didn't like the junction system, really starting to enjoy it this time and i couldn't help but notice how hard the soundtrack goes sometimes!
@silent596
@silent596 8 месяцев назад
The junction system can really be difficult to wrap one's head around at first. But, thankfully, when you do figure it out its a quick and easy way to raise your stats. Only downside is that it makes magic effectively useless since you have to keep it to have higher stats. For when you get it that point (minor spoilers) When Rinoa unlocks the Angel Wings limit break. Keep Full-Life, Ultima, and Meteor junctions to HP, Spirit, and Vitality and no other spells in her inventory. It makes life so much easier.

Outside of Final Fantasy 8 boss music, Final Fantasy 7 is pretty good, Final Fantasy 4 has unforgettable tunes, but Final Fantasy 6 just might be slightly better than the rest in some aspects. There is a piece called, 'The Fierce Battle' from Final Fantasy 6 that has some insane potential with symphony and choir arrangements. I mean, it's hard to go wrong with any Final Fantasy boss music. SquareEnix could break the internet with a proper remake of that one.

I'm not a musician, but I've heard the therm "modulation" before. Is modulation the same as a key change, or this is just a simplification of the concept?
@zennvirus7980
@zennvirus7980 9 месяцев назад
Modulation is moving from one key (or one chord) to next adjacent one, up or down, to change the tone of the music. Works like this: You have a low, ominous key for the beginning. This creates a "dark" tone in the music. (4:44 in this video, for comparison) Then, after a few beats, you move the key up once and the tone changes to a less dark, more hopeful tone (9:00). Or you have a happy, bright tone, and then you lower the key to turn it darker, more melancholic. As you can see in the two examples in the timestamps I give, the music... "raises", grows brighter. Pay attention to you left headphone/speaker, and you'll catch the increase in modulation. That's what Davi means when he says that there is a "story telling going on" in the music. That's what modulation is capable of. It can ramp up or lower the tension without having to change the rhythm. And it's not just the key changes, but the contrast created by them throughout the track. Same with the chords. 16:38, what Davi is explaining is another example of modulation. The "feel" of the chords can also be used to modulate the music and create that "back and fore". To sum it up: it's a planned change in tone, either by changing the keys or the chords, that increases or decreases the "feel" of the music.
