The forging and the polishing were done by different craftsmen, but yeah I'm sure it took a long time to get a finished katana. However, I don't think they put as much detail on a sword if they were in a hurry.

@marhawkman303
@marhawkman303 5 лет назад
Japanese smiths would have melted any copper on hand, melting old pipe is quicker than smelting ore. Realistically a smith would probably have bought copper ingots. People like to think that Japanese swordsmiths did all the things, but really they just shaped the blade. smelting raw materials was usually someone else's job.

"historical ninjato" is a bit of a misnomer as there is little evidence to suggest they existed in that context. The nearest historical example to a ninjato is called a chokuto. Honestly it doesn't make sense for what is essentially a spy trying to blend in to have a signature weapon anyway.

Man At Arms, you guys do a lot of recreation swords, giant swords, functional replicas and fantasy weapons. I wanna see you guys create a high-performance sword. The best sword Baltimore Knife and Sword have ever made. Top of the line steel, distal tapers, perfect centres of percussion, good edge retention (maybe differential tempering?), razor sharp (i.e. will shave you), solid construction, original engraving and art designs, good blade geometry, excellent point of balance, a protective pommel, ergonomic pommel letting you feel your edge alignment, of course the pommel construction will be on point as always, a good flex to take the strain of impact (HEMA or Kendo consultants for the feel of the blades? I dunno...), and basically make the most perfect sword you guys ever have. Call it, "At the Man's Arm," or "the Perfect Sword." I think it would be an awesome challenge, from forging to grinding, to material sourcing. EDIT: I know this is a lame thing to ask, but it seems like they respond to "a lot of similar comments" as opposed to one upvoted one. Thanks for all the thumbs, btw. So, could you guys repost this? Or a similar one? Just to help make this happen! Only if you guys want to, of course. Thanks, again! Credit Stefan Massyn

True that and i would really love to see how such tools are made. One must first build his tools, before learning to use them and gradually master them to actually get to working with them. Engraving is tedious job, but i have patience for such things.. problem is that local hardware shop really dont have chisels like that in the shelf and sensei Ilya has only shown small portion what is needed to learn. I dont come here just to see cool swords, but learn new methods to do things and get inspiration to my own work. I would really like even raw/very little edited video, with little commentary on the side. I have been saying this for years, hopefully they will do this:)

I’ve watched this twice now. I’m even more amazed thinking just how much dedication ONE single man had to commit for a completed sword. This sword is nicely done. Yet, the master done all his word by hand, hand forged from beginning to dedication to its owner. Not once was there a mill, hammer mill, modern furnace, fancy engravers tools. All in there time was state of the art. What we would say were pretty primitive to our modern industrial tools available in use today. I would love to go back in time and learn the secrets of the masters. Impressive indeed. Good build from your team. The sword is beautiful.

At a point the japanese blacksmiths had power hammers and the hand griding and polishing wasn't done by the one who made the sword, but yeah, still impressive and extrenelly time consuming either way, in WWII Japan actually employed industrial methods to the swords for their soldiers, and they had to be done fast and without that much care

there never was a time in history where a katana quality wise was as good as an upper class European sword. one of many reasons was that the Japanese had pretty shitty steel so that they started importing it from Europe the first chance they got. (to this day most "traditional" Japanese blacksmith use imported steel). tdlr: no it wasn't
@arthurmontana2314
@arthurmontana2314 7 лет назад
Jorge Sandoval folding to achive higher quality was known earlier in Europe(among other techniques) than Japan. when the Portuguese arived in around 1540 they ended the samurai era by introducing the Japanese to firearms. the Europeans always had the superior weaponry and armoury measured by quality and effectiveness. this hasn't changed to this day. and no my opinion is not biased for a long time even when I began blacksmithing I also belived katanas where the pinnakle of quality and craftsmanship but that's just not true. peace out and have a good one

So the length of that sword, it makes me think it was specifically for taking down horse mounted soldiers? Or maybe cutting down the horses themselves? I don't see it being a practical blade in ground fighting in dense troop areas. But it's a beautiful weapon. Also, I hope you guys are paying Ilya a lot of money because it seems like he's doing all the heavy lifting in these weapons builds.

@cowartd
@cowartd 7 лет назад
Eethan O'Connell you are pretty much correct. Have you ever seen Princess Mononoke ? In it there's a seen where a few bandits have these swords, and mostly what they use them for is cutting off horses heads when the rider is full charge, and causing the rider to be flung, usually to their death if they are riding fast enough.

Eethan O'Connell from my understanding it was like the great sword and was used against the riders and Spears or used much like a poll arm or a longer Nagamaki
@lordgrin4917
@lordgrin4917 7 лет назад
You wouldn't be dueling with the Nodachi, it was more of a battle field weapon...I mean Nodachi literally means field sword. So it was used by infantry but once the government set the law that swords needed to be a certain length it lost it use and it kind of just became a weapon for ceremonies. Its about the size of Scottish claymore.

did you know that whenever sword makers tried to make swords made of damascus steel, they would heat the blade until it looked like the rising sun in the desert, then cooled to a deep purple then plunged into the body of a muscular slave. Using donkey urine was also another way too. I found it on this website www.nytimes.com/1981/09/29/science/the-mystery-of-damascus-steel-appears-solved.html

He's a master blade smith, weapon's historian, metallurgist, engraver, machinist, woodworker, wood carver and an all around true multi-discipline artist. That is one big blade. I wonder how much they sold it for and who the lucky owner is? No doubt they had many offers on that impeccable piece of art. Personally, I prefer a standard sized Katana and would love to have a folded Tamahagane one that beautifully built by Ilya and crew.
