The first time I watched this it made me feel uncomfortable. Then I watched it a second time and took in the detail, the smoked cigarettes, the medicine bottle, the view of the tree through the window, the other angel wearing glasses and looking out of an opaque window. The look shared between them. The abrupt switch between inside and outside. His reawakening and acceptance and reaching for the end. Unless you have watched someone that you love die this could have little meaning. But when you have lost parents and siblings and spouses as I have and you are older and really understand your own mortality this is uncomfortably real and relatable. When I watched it a 3rd time I cried because it invoked in me a longing for my loved ones and a relief that they are free from the tethers of this world.

Found a statement from the director Joseph Lynn “The film was inspired by my Grandma and her unfaltering optimism and courage throughout her battle with cancer. The film uses movement to explore what it means to experience loss; pain, strength, fear and joy.”

As a dancer, this really touches home. You hear all these stories about ballerinas asking to see old costumes on their deathbed, or even going through the motions of dances with their feeble limbs... That's what this is to me.

Reminds me of an old school youtube video called Kiwi, where a Kiwi jumps off a cliff face and flaps his tiny wings so that he can pretend he's flying, his life long passion, even though he ultimately knows it will be his demise, his passion has been realised, one last time

to me its quite something. What better way to die as an angel then to "jump" and feel the breeze through your feathers one last time. You can see on his face the ecstasy he gets from just feeling the wind, at the end before he falls.... so good its "to die for".

I feel like the fact it’s Noel fielding can have the reverse effect of what most people think. It’s assumed to be a bag of wank just cause he’s in it. I thought it was very nice visually and musically. You could be making superficial assumptions based on the actor.
@kayleighbrown459
@kayleighbrown459 6 лет назад
Here's what I think the deal is. Noel Fielding, is almost unfairly popular. I love the guy, but let's be honest, his acting, is ok and his humour is based almost entirely on saying a bunch of random things that he pulls out of his head. Now I love all that, but I can understand why people don't. Besides that oddly fantastical imagination he has, there are a lot of people that could technically do what he does and most of his success come from luck.. Thing is, he's just so bloody charming with it. He has a ton of childlike traits and quirks and comes across as perfectly self away about how lucky he is and seems endlessly humble and thankful for it. Love or hate his work, there aren't too many people that dislike him as a individual because he's so fundamentally endearing. So there's probably a lot of assumptions based around the people that like him as liking him solely because of that likability factor rather than his work.

THE ANGELS in high places Who minister to us, Reflect God’s smile,-their faces Are luminous; Save one, whose face is hidden, (The Prophet saith), The unwelcome, the unbidden, Azrael, Angel of Death. And yet that veilèd face, I know Is lit with pitying eyes, Like those faint stars, the first to glow Through cloudy winter skies. That they may never tire, Angels, by God’s decree, Bear wings of snow and fire,-- Passion and purity; Save one, all unavailing, (The Prophet saith), His wings are gray and trailing, Azrael, Angel of Death. And yet the souls that Azrael brings Across the dark and cold, Look up beneath those folded wings, And find them lined with gold. --- Robert Gilbert Welsh (1917, The Little Book of Modern Verse)

It was beautiful. I mean, the concept of an angel dying. How does an angel die? I mean, there are more questions than answers to this here. Noel was great in his performance of a dying angel. No words spoken. Just...finally getting up from his wheelchair and his last hurrah until he...dies? Was he already a fallen angel who disobeyed God or something and lived as a mortal with wings in a ward with other fallen angels and now he's going to Hell? Anyway, maybe I'm thinking way too much. But, it was nice to watch.

I think in a piece this short creating stimulating questions is more powerful than answering them. It leaves your imagination open to all sorts of possibilities; some of which you mentioned. Art can be stimulating. You don't get answers from surrealist art but it's still valuable.
