Agreed although Paul Weller is a great singer in his own right and wrote the song. Noel Gallagher connects with it and when he sings the lyrics it sounds like he means them. He really nails the vocals of the song and it's a great cover.
Which of the Jam songs do you think could have most influenced Noel? I pretty much enjoy both of them... have you any songs to suggest me to add in my personal compulsive viewer history ?
Noel has such a beautiful, expressive voice. I like the original, but Noel just does something special when he sings. Godlike genius indeed. Thank goodness for Noel Gallagher in this world.
same, channel 4 documentry wiv steve craddock and liam doin carnation nd that fkn instantly made me a fanatic, off to see oasis at murrayfield year after
When you say simplified, you mean he can only play one instrument at once? The Jam was a band, not one person. So technically, if any ONE person was to cover this, including Paul Weller himself, it would be simplified. Why do so many people with no fucking idea about music come onto the RU-vid comments section and start acting like they are fucking Rick Rubin? Shut the fuck up and enjoy the music, nobody needs your shit ass opinion.
And I can't find a great deal of difference between the melody of this one and the original, apart from the fact that THE TEMPO has been drastically changed, along with THE KEY that the song is played in. Cheers.
Nick Jones .. spot on man ! I might also add that the majority of these tone deaf morons commenting here weren’t even born when the Jam released this gem & have no idea who Paul Weller is or how the original song was supposed to sound ! Drunk Noel on guitar doesn’t do this masterpiece any justice whatsoever! Terrible version !
Why the hell every single song Noel sings gets so fucking emotive? And so freakin' good? What this man has? Genious. For some reason this version of his means a lot to me.
To be someone must be a wonderful thing A famous footballer or a rock singer Or a big film star Yeah I think that I would like, I would like that To be rich and have a lot of fans A lot of girls to prove that I'm a man To be number one and loved by everyone Getting drugged up with my trendy friends They really dig me man and I dig them but the money that I spent It is like my fame and it's quickily gone No more swimming in my guitar shaped pool, No more reporters at my beck and call, No more cocaine, now only ground chalk, And i cant afford a taxi so I have to walk Didn't I have a nice time? Didn't I have a nice time? Didn't I have a nice time? I realize I should've stuck to my guns They shit me out just like a bastard son And I lost myself And I know that it was wrong, but it cost me a lot There is no more drinking when the club shuts down I'm out here on my ass with the rest of you clowns I'm really scared without my bodyguard when I'm sitting on my own in my expensive yard Didn't I have a nice time? Didn't I have a nice time? Didn't I have a nice time? Did I have a nice time? Did I have a nice time? I can't remember if I had a nice time Did I have a nice time? To be someone must be a wonderful thing
Just learnt to play this on my acoustic guitar. Finally able to play and sing at the same time as well which im so happy with. What a tune. Amazing song covered by another amazing artist ❤
Seeing as this was a point in his life where he was just starting to leave behind the rock star lifestyle, I get the feeling this song means quite a bit for Noel here...
He turned this shouty old thing into something very moving.I used to love yelling along to 'Didn't we have a nice time' at the time and wondered how he would do it in this slowed down version, but it worked. It always works with Noel😊
Absolutely amazing...as I've got older, that beautiful message from Weller, first received at 14yrs old has become so much more apparent, delivered thoughtfully and simply... learned the word's back then, but today I fully understand them Nice one Paul, nice one Noel
I’ve not heard this in years but I just remembered it. Still hits as amazing as ever. I agree with those who say this is better than the Who’s original. If Noel could’ve been their producer, if time machines were a thing as Noel was but a child when Paul wrote this, they would’ve been way more world famous than they were. They would’ve been it.
Listing to the original its just a solid tune and doesn't really make me think, but the way Noel has performed it let's the song speak a lot more and gives it more expression and it seems to be about being true to yourself and don't be a sellout and enjoy yourself while you can and don't fuck the people over who are genuine just to go and fit in with the popular lot because when it all backfires, you'll be left with no one and nothing. Just what it says to me.
Prick, you know fuck all, times where different when weller punched this one out, probably pressure, come back when you know you know what you're talking about
love you noel and all your songs since day 1 of rain/OASIS ,i have a brother too just make up then we mancunians can get mad fer it again , everyone misses OASIS
@@spm36 Exactly. I like Noel's work with Oasis and solo. I give him credit for being smart enough to recognise that a straight up style cover of such an iconic, superb record would be foolish and destined to be hugely inferior by comparison to the original. It would appear he recognised this as he's done what I would call less a straight cover; more a homage, by changing the melody and delivery. However; to suggest that it's possible to make a version that surpasses the seminal brilliance of "The Jam" is ridiculously moronic. Not least because the social backdrop of Weller's original was very different to the time of Noel's take on the record. Weller was (obviously) writing with "The Jam" way prior to the internet, in a time of political unrest and social injustice (Eton Rifles) and was passionate about drawing attention to things he felr pertinent - his pervasive fury ( justifiable!) at the time of the 3 day working week and a load of jeering Etonian twats with revolting levels of extreme privilege, jeering at chaps queuing up just to earn a few quid for a day's honest graft was the catylst for imo, one of the finest records ever made. Who could ever forget the TOTP performance of the Eton Rifles?! An outraged, angry young Paul Weller is simply sublimely brilliant. Jeez - I am fucking boring! - I do apologise if I've lulled you into a coma....(Cringes at self.) Anyhow; I'm certain that you are very well aware of and acquainted with, everything I've wittered on at far too great a length. I replied to you in order to express my utter agreement with you; but I felt compelled to include the detail for individuals such as the one who made the initial comment in this thread. Unfortunately, far too many people make vacuous comments without bothering to learn anything about the original recording, the band responsible for it, or the social climate at the time. Here, Weller conveys less anger than in aforementioned Eton Rifles; but instead uses his understated, irreverence with irony to discuss the superficial nature of aspiring to be seen as a big shot. It's impossible to authentically recreate that ironic stance now, given that the horrible truth is that it's exactly what the vast majority of people aspire too; ergo, there is no irony left to be conveyed. Or: I could simply have stated " I agree with you completely." 😩😆. At any rate, all the very best to you, love Txx.
what he sings in this song is the same has what weller wrote all noel have done is stamped his own sound on it but i must say its the best cover ive heard of this song anyone have done so far by miles Peace!!
