Few days ago my dog barely opens her eyes. Always try to hide under the bed whenever she has the chance but she still ate and came at me. But recently she now has runny nose, and when I checked today because she is breathing noisily, I believe it is now clogged because of the fluid coming out of his nose. What should I do?

@@llewenflores5142 hi there. That doesn't sound good. Our vets are available for consults via our website www.yourvetonline.com and they can advise specifically. Otherwise make sure you are cleaning her eyes and nose wiping away all the muck. That will help her to breathe. All the best.

Hi! We have a one and half golden retriever and the last 3 months after running he sounds like a track. Very loud noise sounds really bad but he doesn’t stop running. The vet said everything is fine???
@YourVetOnline
@YourVetOnline 2 года назад
@@katerinat9821 large breed dogs can be prone to numerous problems, one being laryngeal hemiplegia. It might pay to take a video recording of your dog making the sound to show your vet (or our vets would be happy to help: yourvetonline.com). Listening to the sound can provide a hint what might be causing it. The next step would be to examine the airways under light sedation to check that everything is moving as it should.

Breeding any "pure bred" dog is pretty immoral - but breeding brachycephalic dogs is literal animal abuse. If you love these dogs, you'll allow them to go extinct. Adopt the poor souls that have already been born, but we should pass a law requiring every dog with over 75% pug or bulldog be sterilized.

Hi doc, thank you so much for this informative video. I have one question for you, do we know how BOAS impacts the heart? Can this cause an enlarged heart or heart arrhythmias? Thank you.
@YourVetOnline
@YourVetOnline 3 года назад
Hi, BOAS is not a primary cause of those issues, however it can make it harder for a dog that is also affected by these issues.

I have a Pomeranian that all of a sudden is snoring and snorking he doesn’t have a collapsed trachea or elongated soft palate my vet did an upper airway exam she said his tonsils were slightly enlarged she said they weren’t big enough to remove. I’m doing a ct scan on his head and neck in two weeks. She said he has a cleft palate I’m thinking if nothing shows I may go for a second opinion. He can sneeze fully either it’s weird

thank you very much, I did this operation on my pug and widened her nostrals . my question is can the palet grow long aging ? and if so how common is it that it will. my vet told me that's it quite common .what's your thoughs on this ? I'm a little worried because I think she makes little more noise now than when she was newly operated 2 years ago.
@YourVetOnline
@YourVetOnline 3 года назад
Hi Rebecca The palate doesn't grow, however if the surgery was performed while her skull was still growing (before a year old for a pug) then it's possible that not enough was removed. Be mindful that it is better to remove not enough than too much. Next time she has a dental I would ask them to check her larynx and do what ever is required.
@rebecca-up7nk
@rebecca-up7nk 3 года назад
@@YourVetOnline hi thank you very much, no she was an adult when she had the surgery around. 4 years old . so that is very god to hear that it doesn't grow 😊 don't know what my vet meant when she was saying that it could become '"loose" again and in some cases you could be doing the surgery a second time .
@YourVetOnline
@YourVetOnline 3 года назад
@@rebecca-up7nk perhaps your vet meant that the saccules could grow? It isn't uncommon for dogs to deteriorate even if they just had the palate surgery performed because there is more to BOAS than just a nose and palate problem. If in doubt, recheck at the next dental unless she is struggling to breathe, and then go sooner.

I have a yorkie/maltese mix who does not have a flat face like these breeds at all- however, she has been diagnosed with brachycephalic syndrome. We have tried everything else. I am considering surgery but would have to pay pretty penny and find a surgeon who could perform this in Florida. I’d hate to do the surgery and it turn out to be a misdiagnosis and not help her at all! We have done so many procedures that haven’t helped. I am at a loss! Do you think that yorkies could have this too?
@YourVetOnline
@YourVetOnline 2 года назад
The vet who diagnosed the problem usually does the surgery unless they are not experienced. Did the vet anaesthetise your girl to make the diagnosis?
@HamelAshley
@HamelAshley 2 года назад
@@YourVetOnline Yes, the vet who diagnosed her did anesthetize her briefly to get a good look back there to make sure there wasn’t some other anatomic anomaly that we were missing. This is the second vet i’ve brought her to, as the vet before her thought her issue was her teeth, so I had them cleaned and some removed. That didn’t help! She’s been on so many different meds, had xrays and lab work… Part of me believes she has something wrong with her heart, maybe chf, and is just being misdiagnosed. As of now, she is on the mac dose Temaril-P twice per day. She still has problems with that, and oftentimes we have to put her back on Prednisone 5mg twice per day and then wean it and start back with Temaril-P, which she is unable to wean off of. She’s 8 years old and never had any trouble breathing until after two severe bouts of HGE in 2019. Immediately following the treatment for HGE, she came down with pneumonia and has never been the same since.

Oh my goodness I have the same breed and just asked the exact same question. We laughed about it at first because our baby that does it is not even one yet and she would do it when she would try and carry 3 toys in her mouth at once because she doesn't like to share toys. So it would make her kind of grunt breathe like a hog almost but we've noticed she is now doing it other times as well. Sometimes just when I'm holding her and she's the least bit excited but now even sometimes when she is just at rest but it's definitely not all the time either. It's so scary, I just lost my poor female Maltese right before her 4th birthday not from anything like this but we still don't know what happened and it devastated me. I'll never be whole or recover fully as she was my world but to now have this new little companion we got for my male Maltese to have her having issues like this so young I'm terrified because I've bonded to her in a way I didn't imagine possible after losing my girl and I cannot go through losing one of my babies again so I'm desperate for answers. Did you get any answers, what symptoms were you seeing that concerned you? I'm desperate for help, I have near zero trust in our vet which is an awful feeling. The vet I worked for for 4 years was a saint and so smart but he's now retired and I can't find one I trust so we stick to the one we've had. It's awful not trusting your vet. I'd be so grateful for any answers or help

@YourVetOnline

Hi There This is a progressive problem which means it will get worse over time. It sounds like your mum's dog requires surgery to lower the risk of a catastrophic airway event. I would get an estimate from your vet and start putting away money for it.

my 4 month old puppy sounds like she has boas. when do you think the best age and weight for her to get this surgery ? She’s small as well no more than 15 pounds. I’m really worried because her breathing is bad but I know she’s pretty small and I doubt she will be able to take the anesthesia.

Hi. I have an 5 month old American Bulldog who just started making a noise while eating as if his nose is stuffed up. His eyes water a bit. I take his bowl from him for a min so he can pick his head up from the bowl and breath better and give it back to him and he finishes the bowl without the noise. Could he be sick with a runny nose or ?
@YourVetOnline
@YourVetOnline 2 года назад
It may be many things, but something you could try is to slow down his eating. Use a slow feeder or split his meals and put them in different places or spread them around so he has to find them. If this doesn't work, our vets are available 24/7 to work out what the problem may be: vip.yourvetonline.com/ask-a-vet-a-question

Can this happen in other breeds that do not have shortened snouts? My morkie had this grunted sounding breathing, it's worse when she has a toy in her mouth so that's what made me think it might be palatal but she does it other times as well when she's even just happy while I'm petting her but it is not all the time either. It's not reverse sneezing both my Maltese and my morkie do this as well so I'm very familiar with that and easily soothe that for them. My baby girl needs to be spayed and I was concerned with intubation or breathing difficulty and it being an issue. I really don't trust in my vet more than once they've lost my trust but I fear ending up with a worse one by starting over completely. It's awful not having a vet you trust

Hello Mam, Writing this email because I was a bit concerned about my dog's health. Last night my dog who is 6 months and half or maybe 7 months leg got lame. Someone told me to give her panadol(parcetamol) I gave her 1 and half by breaking the pill to small pieces. I got to know that percestamol is toxic for dogs which made me worried. It's been 22 hours after the medicine she was alright and her leg also got fine . The area where I live we don't have any good vets and there's only one vet when I contacted he said it's fine and I should give alot of water. But still iam worried about although she is perfectly fine even the doctor said not to worry. I hope this medicine won't effect her or if I can do anything at home to boost her immune and can I mix some of juice of lemon in her water. I hope you will read and reach to me very soon. I would be very grateful.

Hi. My Frenchie will be 4 in September. He had BOAS surgery this past February 2021. He had the stenoic nares and had them widened and he had elongated soft palate done. But. I still notice that he props his head up while sleeping and also he will be sleeping and suddenly lift his head to breathe. Why does he still do these things even after he had this surgery? A very expensive surgery! Worries me. Is this normal?
@YourVetOnline
@YourVetOnline 2 года назад
Hi Carly There are lots of components that cause this issue and if your boy only had palate and nostrils fixed it's possible he needs saccules out too. Sadly, for some dogs their nasal passages are so abnormal that none of these procedures will help and you need to have LATE surgery performed. This is a highly specialised procedure only offered in a few places. Where are you located?
