For several hours after a walk in the park my pug had been constantly reverse sneezing. After reaching the conclusion it wasn’t related to heat exhaustion I tried this method and my dog ended up ‘normal’ sneezing a large blade of grass out his nose!! Thank you so so much for making this video!! You’ve saved him from what could have been a much nastier problem

Thank you, very informative. My Frenchy was doing this after he had his BOAS surgery last year so worried he was still having breathing problems, took him to the vet today and she suggested it most likely reverse sneezing which brought me to your video. So glad it's not a serious health condition and how I can help him when he has the episodes.

Yes, my beagle would have these episodes when we used a regular collar. He'd get excited in cool weather, then pull on leash and he'd up with the snorting sound. We ended up switching him to a harness. He prevented the hyperventilating/reverse sneezing 90%. The 10% was due to him sniffing close to the ground and probably inhaled something that irritated him.

Thanks for this information. We haves a 5 yr old Miniature Labradoodle that has done this since he was a puppy and have never been able to diagnose it. We have discovered that if we gently pat him on his back that it helps to stop the spasms. Everything you described is what sets it off, such as eating, excitement and sometimes pulling on his leash. We have worried that someday he would have a stroke or something. This makes me feel a lot better about this.

Great informative video! I took my dog to the vet who couldn’t find anything wrong but gave me an rx for coughing. I gave him one pill and stopped as it didn’t help at all. I have a French Bulldog her name is Niecy, as I got her from my Niece that had a litter. When we had her spayed our vet suggested that she could clip the flaps in her nose to make it easier for Niecy to breathe. She’s 2 years old now and the first time she reversed sneezed it scared me as I thought she was having some kind of seizure! I comforted her and she came out of it! The older she’s gotten the less frequent the reverse sneezing has gotten! I found that when she gets into her reverse sneezing jag,if I push down on her nose with my finger she comes out of it quicker!

My rat terrier had this happen in the middle of the night after barking at a severe lightning/thunder storm. I thought “This is it. She’s going to choke to death.” She initially tried to throw up but didn’t. She slept the rest of the night with it happening one more time multiple snorts. Then in the morning but hasn’t had it happen in hours now. She’s playing, barking, seems normal otherwise. I’ll try the finger in the mouth if it happens again. @@StefanieMycko I feel for you! There is no pattern at all for the attacks that I can see with my girl. Very random. And thankfully not very often! Maybe a couple of times a year at the most. 💜

This video was really helpful. I have two Foxies, 2 yr old siblings I have had since 8 weeks. The little girl has done this occasionally since very young so I have got used to hearing her, however her brother has only just started doing it so would you suggest getting him looked at? Thanks

Hi Steph, if the signs in your boy are unusual and continue it would be worth a check. Realise that your vet will need to anaesthetise - they need to check for foreign bodies and flush the nose etc.

I have a Pekingese/Chihuahua mix, she's almost 7 years old, and I can tell her reverse sneezing still makes her so nervous! She doesn't have a totally flat face like a purebred Pekingese, but she still has a very short snout.

Yes it can be very distressing for the dog. Next time she has a dental exam/clean, ask your vet to check her for signs of BOAS. She may benefit from surgery.

After researching I come across this video and I think my Maltese Shih Tzu, may just suffer from this. It’s been happening on and off for a long time.the first few times I’ll admit... sent me into panic mode and he appeared distressed and scared, then after going through this a few times I discovered that during an episode if I was calm, sat with him and rubbed/massaged under his neck and spoke calmly he coped much better. These were not happening enough or that regular that if we were at the vet I would think about mentioning it. I honestly had just put it down to his old age ( now 84 in human years) he had an episode about 15 mins ago and this time I grabbed my camera and filmed him in action. I have an appointment tomorrow with our vet for his arthritis injection and I’ll be sure to mention this also just to be safe but I do feel much more at ease after seeing this video. So thank you :)

I have a mix Mini Schnauzer and Maltese, and it sounds like a loud reverse gasping for air. It was pretty terrifying the first time it happened.. We hardly hear it, don't know if its more frequent because sometimes we're not home for a long while. I think He throws up a little in his mouth and then swallows it back.. I feel so bad when i see it happening.

My Teacup Chihuahua does this a lot.. More so if he goes near the bed of my Pit bull.. or if he is super excited.. I just got off the phone with my vet and she told me it is very common in the breed of little dogs.

Thank you so much. That was really helpful. My vet told me to look this hope when I told her what my frenchie was doing. We've found it hopeful to blow in our frenchie girls nose. And that helps her stop & breathe when she reserve sneezes.

Glad you found it helpful. Yes blowing in the nose or even their ear can help. Sometimes they snap though....and if your face is close you might inadvertently get in their way 😳

This is really helpful. I have a new French Bulldog puppy and she’s only had one episode, but frequently she does this thing similar to a reverse sneeze but only one, sometimes two “sneeze(s)” and she gags as if she has a hair ball in her throat. I took her to the vet and they didn’t have much to say about it. Do you have any advice?
@YourVetOnline
@YourVetOnline 3 года назад
Hi Sarah If she swallows it will likely solve the problem. But gagging is likely a different problem altogether. It could actually be her regurgitating and be a sign that she has reflux. Keep an eye on her and if it continues it would be best to see your vet. Take care.

My dog has been doing this for years, he is a terrier cross, my vet thinks he has a soft palate. He does this every time he gets over excited, it sounds awful but she said that it’s highly unlikely it will get any worse. He occasionally coughs but it’s mostly a honking sound.

I just watched a video after an episode today because I've always used the tricks of pressing down her tongue, massaging her throat with two fingers but it wasn't working but I watched a video of a guy today and he closes the mouth and covers just one nostril and it worked so well

I have 2 chihuahuas which are father and son and it seems as if they reverse sneeze more then the other chi chi's we have. Can it be a genetic condition? Is it common in chihuahuas? Pancake is 1 year and 8 months and Nugget is 8 months. Your video has put my mind at ease, but I just want to be sure. Thank you for your videos and your time.🐕🐶🐩🐾
@YourVetOnline
@YourVetOnline 3 года назад
Hi Stephanie Thanks for your question and your kind words. Yes it could be genetic. Just like we have features like our parents, our dogs do too. So if a dog has a long soft palate then it is possible that their offspring will have a long one too. Take care!

Hi! Thank you so much for this. I was super worried. My dog is a stray and she was sleeping and then started to reverse sneeze. I realized it happened after I put on lavendar essencial oil. Could you explain if maybe my dog was allergic and that was the reason?
@YourVetOnline
@YourVetOnline 3 года назад
Yes be very careful with any essence oils, scented candles. They can cause problems like this and some are toxic.

Thank you for the video :) I’m wondering if dogs with reverse sneezing would vomit like once a day? Is there a chance if the dog keeps vomiting because of reverse sneezing? Or is it likely to be caused by other reasons? I am not sure because my dog had ear infection treated a few months ago but when I checked recently the ear seems to be pinkish but with a bit of bright gray color mixed..so just curious what the cause is.. Thank you!
@YourVetOnline

Vomiting and reverse sneezing are unlikely to be related, but if you have a brachycephalic breed then they may have other issues such as a hiatel hernia. Vomiting daily is not normal. Please discuss with your vet or our online vets at yourvetonline.com

Love the information thank you! I thought my pug was dying!! From a marketing point of view, 9 mins is a bit long. Average attention span is like 15 seconds. I’d speed it up a notch and cut the time in half to maintain and keep a larger demographic 🥰😉👍🏼🐾🐾

Hey Scot Yep...that first time you hear it can be very scary 😳 Glad we were able to settle the nerves and possibly prevent the mad dash to an ER clinic where all the vets feel bad at saying it's all OK 👍 Thanks for the fabulous feedback. Yes...I'm a slow talker 🤦‍♀️ and yes, sometimes I fail to keep to a coherent script 🤦‍♀️ Thankfully it's not my day job 😂😂😂 Tell me, have you got any other topics you'd like me to cover? Another problem is my lack of inspiration!

My Frenchie Bear reverse sneezes a lot. Lately he has been “coughing” up mucus/phlegm and sometimes food after a reverse sneeze.. And it can happen multiple times in a day. I know this could be allergies as the seasons are changing. Would Benedryl help to settle it down?
@YourVetOnline
@YourVetOnline 3 года назад
Hi Connie Thanks for your question. Benadryl could possibly work, however studies show that anti-histamines are only effective in about 20% of dogs. If it doesn't work, you may need to investigate other medications for allergies.

That makes me feel a little better. I have had 8 total rottweilers in my life, I currently have 4 but have never experienced this except with my baby girl tator tot that I kept from our litter. I had to do cpr to get her breathing when born, then bottle fed since she was so little. At 3 weeks she had JUST reached 1.5lbs. Well now she's almost 11 months and over 90lbs. She just started this and yes freaking out doesn't even come close. I just knew she was gasping for breath. It was few and far between but she woke us up last nt and I've intervened a few times today...do you have many rottweilers do this? My vet told me I could give her 3 benadryl if it gets worse...I'd just die if it was something else.

My little 6 lb Morkie started reverse sneezing about 6 months ago. It's was far and few between but as of the last 3 months ths the episodes have increased and it happens much more frequently. I have taken him to a vet who, prescribed a cough medicine type thing for him and that helped for the time he was on the medication but approximately a week after he started again. It happens at any time and is becoming increasingly more frequent. Happens when he is sleeping at night, laying around, after eating or drinking and at any other time for no apparent reason. What could I do to help him and what could be the cause
