Nokta Legend Erratic Behavior and POSSIBLE Solution
The issue with the Nokta Legend erratic behavior is the Update Tool includes a 5 year old version of the Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge VCP Driver and it needs to have the latest Windows driver install on your Windows PC before you perform an update.

This is a manual install process.
How to update to a new Windows driver
Windows 10 Instructions:
1. Click the download LINK above, download the newest version of the driver "CP210x Universal Windows Driver" V11.3.0 6/24/2023
2. Extract the ZIP folder anywhere you like.
3. Open Windows file explorer.
4. Go to the folder where you extracted the driver package to
5. Click “view” at the top of the folder menu bar, click “options” at the end of the ribbon.
6. Select “change folder and search options”, click the “view tab” on top tabs.
7. The folder options window will now appear below on the VIEW tab.
8. Uncheck “display the full path in the title bar”, uncheck “hide extensions for known file types”, check off “show hidden files folders, and drives” click the ok button
9. While inside the folder where you extracted the driver files to, Right click on the “silabser.inf” file then select install from the menu and follow the instructions. You should get a message that the driver installed successfully.
10. Reboot the Windows PC, log in and run the Legend Update tool again. You can now update to any version of the Legend firmware, 1.09, 1.10, 1.11 etc. without fear of using the wrong driver.
11. Make sure to factory reset your device after you update the Legend.
12. Go test the machine and come back and tell me if it worked, and the erratic behavior is gone.
Windows 11 Instructions:
1. Click the download LINK above, download the newest version of the driver "CP210x Universal Windows Driver" V11.3.0 6/24/2023

5. Click “View” in top tool bar ribbon
6. Click “Show” at the bottom. A side Ribbon panel will extend out
7. Check Mark/Select “File name extension” & “Hidden Items” (You may need to repeat steps 5 & 6 to select both “File name extension” than “Hidden Items” one at a time)
8. While inside the folder where you extracted the driver to, Right click on the “silabser.inf” file then select install from the menu and follow the instructions. You should get a message that the driver installed successfully.
9. Reboot the Windows PC, log in and run the Legend Update tool again. You can now update to any version of the Legend firmware, 1.09, 1.10, 1.11 etc. without fear of using the wrong driver.
10. Make sure to factory reset your device after you update the Legend.
11. Go test the machine and come back and tell me if it worked, and the erratic behavior is gone.

I personally find it rather implausible that a faulty driver / update could cause the issues you have had. It's standard practice for software like this to perform verification steps / verify checksums at various points during and after installation. If the EEPROM was corrupted I'd wager the device wouldn't even boot. Something weird is definitely going on, but if it was an issue in the software package the problem would be far more widespread and tons of people would be reporting this problem. Thank you for sharing your experience though, interesting to follow the issue.

That’s awesome the problem was discussed among several folks and a possible solution was discovered. If it turns out that’s is indeed the problem you all will have helped some others out with there frustrations also 😁👍🏼. Way to follow through John and not just brush it off. You are a good man !

Thanks for the information, I will do it. I've had my legend for a year now without any issues. But I'm in Idaho, no ocean beaches to detect. I enjoy watching your videos, Keep up the good work.

Thank you , thank you it made my Legend awesome again. I was having the same problem after downloading the 1.11 upgrade and could not solve it even by reloading the 1.09 version. Now she solid and quiet once again.

Thought you knew about updating the drivers already. People in the Facebook groups have been mentioning that for a while. Glad you made a video about it though because 99% of the time it is user error and a lot of Detectorist love the tech on the detectors but don’t live tech on computers lol. Keep them Legend videos coming!

Lets wait on Noktas's evaluations, but nice one for the info. Glad I left mine on v 1.09. To those who have other opinions regarding up-dates: fair play. For me, personally, my LG/LG24 found me two tiny, thin, cut dirham fragments, each one 'bout the size of half a little finger nail,of an average size man, amongst iron. Last person that held them was a Viking. No need for me to up-date based on that performance. You are an honest man John. Subbed your channel now.

Hey thanks brother. That info does help me, that you have not updated. It explains POSSIBLY why you have not had the issues. My advice is don't update it for now. Not until we all get to the bottom of this. If aint broke don't fix it. Nice viking finds, thats unreal, well done.

You are very welcome. And yep, 'If it's cruising along nice, don't tinker, just chill and enjoy the ride. The dirham sherds were nice to find, however, the LGs ability to hit them on both was outstanding, they are literally almost roasting foil thin, amongst bits of old nails and clippings of lead et al. Yet the tonal values were un-mistakably tiny silver. VDI is a waste of time on our ancient sites, for me. Six hours of intense concentration on audio nuances is exhausting. I stop for quarter of an hour every hour. Mind you, I'm no 'summer rooster' anymore!@@SOFLOTreasureFindsLegend is very good, but I interchange regularly with my old 'war-horse' for the craic. My battered old F19 is a wicked tool: plenty good finder.

An old drivers issue now that's good and Amy's legend has not been updated on a Windows platform and does not chat issues with her machine. I think you nailed it.

Great video first i heard of this TY driver updated was slightly different on windows 11 as when you enter the folder after unzipping options is next to the view button in file explorer and the rest is basically the same as windows 11 few less steps as there is no change folder and search options that pops right up for you , then when you get to right click on inf file just hit open and install , Follow the instructions and you will easily see slight change in Windows 11 only took a few minutes following your instructions i will let you know as i will update the machine when i get home. I got this problem today out of no where. Been on 1.13 for a month or more. This didn't fix anything. I find it hard to believe drivers could cause the issue. Going to send it for repair.

I did this and the detector works for a few minutes then it goes mental again. Doing a ground balance seems to kill it. Even the pinpointer doesn't work. Going to have to send it for repair, it's useless.

Ya I don't know what's going with Nokta machines. I see a lot of people having issues. The minelab nox 900 is just problem free, noise free detector. I know the price point is higher, but I feel you get what you pay for. When the legend works, it works great but for me more often than not the machine is too problematic and ruins the hunt. Amy is on the brink of losing her patience at this point as well with the legend. I think its time she makes the jump as well to a Nox 900.

I have done Legend updates on Windows 11 and Mac OS to V1.11. I have always completely deleted/uninstalled all update tools whether they are from Nokta, Minelab or XP before installing new software. I also make sure that my Windows 11 has updated drivers before installing these company's update tools. Some people obviously don't. I installed V 1.11 on one of my Legends from my Windows laptop as soon as it was released back in April of 2023 which is before the latest Silicon Labs USB driver mentioned by SOFLO was released. I did not have any problems. Others definitely have had this high chatter/appears to be incessant EMI issue. Hopefully sending your Legend #3 back to Nokta will help them diagnose what could be corrupting the Legend's performance. I have not had any issues with Nokta or Minelab software updates using Mac OS. I have had plenty of issues doing pre V1.09 Legend updates, Deus 2 updates and the Manticore update using Windows 11 even when completely deleting all previous software versions and update tools. Being able to do online updates on these newest detectors is awesome, but it can also be a can of worms depending on how it turns out.

Thanks for the information, and subscribed! Staying with 1.09 for now. I do have a question for you or others: noticed you have the updated legend. I've had mine since they were introduced...is there a noticeable difference in the weight of the machine with the elliptical coil, carbon fiber shaft etc? The reason i ask is, as an older guy, I find my legend to be overly heavy, which is why I have under 10hrs total on mine. My first detector was a Troy shadow x2 which was super light. I'm wondering if it's worth it to spend the extra money for the lighter shaft/coil? Thanks.

The carbon fiber upper and lower shafts and the elliptical coil do make a noticable difference in weight. I also had two of the original legends (gen 1). But its still heavier than the nox 900, very noticable switching back and forth from the legend to the nox 900.

I got my Legend back in May of 2023. I updated the audio package when I first got it. I had version 1.09 when I received the detector and used it for about a month. I had seen a couple of videos about uninstalling all drivers and folders for the updates and installing new drivers before installing 1.11. I followed the videos and never had any issues with my machine being noisy or depth problems showing up from what I’ve seen. I don’t know if I will need to update the drivers again before installing to 1.13 and up but I’ll cross that bridge bridge when I get there.

I think i updated from 1.07 to 1.11 on windows 7, my legend seems a tiny bit chattery but not as bad as the video you posted, nothing that emi cant explain, ill borrow a friends computer and run the update again and see if that changes anything, all my computers run GNU/Linux i borrowed the windows 7 computer from my mom

Hey Tap! So there is a long winded answer to this, but the short one is NO. As a matter of fact, even after all the deep diving I did, and the communication I had, I got no where. To top it off, I have come to the conclusion that the Legend is just a noisy machine depending on where you hunt. Some beaches Amy's legend is utterly useless, its noisy chattery, and she has to lower her sensitivity down to below 13 to make it remotely bearable (and she has the new one) . I on the other hand never have any of these issues on my NOX 900 no matter what beach we are on. This is what brings me to the conclusion its just the machine and how it behaves. Which is WHY I rarely use it anymore. Amy is getting frustrated and is close to throwing in the towel on the Legend as well (she has more patience than me). At some point, I will get her a NOX 700 or 900 and her Legend will also become her backup machine. It is a shame because I really tried to Love the Legend but I cannot get over this one flaw that sometimes makes a hunting a unpleasant experience. Who needs stress when hunting? I do not.

I have the Legend update tool v1.8 and it has that USB driver install package in it. I've used it to go back to 1.09 and it did quite down. Going back to 1.13 and I'll see what happens

So I just updated mine to 1.13. If I update the driver van I reinstall 113 or so I have to in stall a different version then reinstall 113? Meaning will it see I have 113 and say I am up-to-date? So far I have not seen the charter but I do get that weird little box saying black sand warning which is odd.....

You can update the drivers than reload to 1.13. You can reload as many times as you want.

I updated using my laptop windows 11 so far I've had no problems, so either it used windows drivers or it installed drivers all by itself...

I believe it may have helped make it run quieter. Most of the day i was at max sensitivity with little noise. i would say it wouldn't hurt to try the driver update. Its either going to do nothing or improve your detecting experience, in my test it improved.

If I have already upgraded to 1.11 back about 5 months ago with no issues at all. Are you saying that I would still need to update my drivers if I'm going from 1.11 to 1.13 ?? PLEASE LET ME KNOW

Ever since I “updated” my Legend to 1.11 it hasn’t been the same. Not as bad as yours was… almost the opposite. Like the signal kinda lags when swinging over a target… But I did it on Mac OS so idk. Also my shaft is stuck all the way down so I can’t even use it anyway 😂🤷‍♂️

Dan, the link in the description has the Mac OS drivers too. Install them and run the legend update again. CP210x VCP Mac OSX Driver v6.0.2

I have the same problem and I am about to get rid of this POS machine. I only have 17 hours on it and it happens about every other time I use it. Sometimes it works fine sometimes is gets crazy and lowering sensitivity or anything works to clear it up. Finally it stops detecting period. Until you shut it off and turn it back on.

I recommend the Equinox 700 or 900. Although this fix helped, it didnt eliminate it enitrely. I have since switched to a equinox 900 and it is dead quiet. I use the Legend every now and again. Not having to deal with the constant chatter, playing with settings every 10mins has brought back the enjoyment of this hobby for me.

I'm having same problem to 10 hrs on my machine . I think that nokta are pos have a minelab excalibur for 15 years and still going strong. I wish I could trade mine for a equinox and some cash here in Florida

I'm having this problem I had version 1.07 when I bought it then I decided to update to 1.13 machine became very unstable tried down grading back to 1.07 and now the machine is still unstable I believe because I can't factory reset after downgrading my nokta legend has less than 20 hrs

I thought this lroblem was solved once they came out woth the new update tool they use now? The one that shows the pictures and stuff while youre doing it. Mine came with 1.13 and zero issues.

If you look at the drivers that come with the download they are old unfortunately.

You can update it, just do it the right way Install the drivers first. This way you know you have the best drivers out of the gate.

Same thing with Amy's Legend, which is why she had no issues. If you ever decide to upgrade follow these steps first. Come back and let me know how it works when you do. Happy new year!

If you plug the machine in, than go to device manager, you should be able to locate the USB driver from there.
