i think a problem with some game cinematics is that they are made for expansions of the base game and expect you to have prior knowledge by having played the game

Stepping on Mars in that first scene is OUR present day, the 21st century, and everything else that happens in Destiny's story happens in the future from that event.

I know why you got chills in that mars landing trailer it was the music, it's made by Marty O'Donnell whos one of the most famous composers for games around dude knows how to get emotion out of people.

You should watch “my name is byf” ‘s video on the story of destiny, although it is pretty long, so maybe not(at least 2 hours)

The thing about destiny as a story is you get about 90% of the story through gameplay and Sources outside the game itself, that and you essentially just watched the first 2 min of about 5 different stories that are mostly self contained and do not link to each other much

Yeah, totally understand your confusion. Mara Sov is the Queen of the Awoken, she's the speaker in the Taken King prologue and the House of Wolves trailer. Crota is the antagonist of the first Destiny Expansion, which connects to the Taken King, since Oryx is his father and has come for revenge. The Hidden Friend is Eris Morn, the speaker in the Taken King Trailer and the Dark Below Trailer. The game assumes you know this information, since when you originally played Destiny 1 you had to play through the story first. None of these cinematics are aimed at new players, they're not trying to lure anyone new in really. They're aimed at those who already know the lore, stories and characters. Destiny 1 had horrible storytelling and imo these videos should not have been recommended to you. Destiny 2's storytelling was quite weak at the games release and is only now starting to improve, years later. As someone who loves these games and game worlds I'd advise you to avoid them for a while, I really can't see you getting much out of them.

Ok, here's a relatively short, but still quite long, synopsis of what you've watched. - In the first video, "present day" is a parallel 21st century where humans just started exploring the solar system. That was their first contact with an alien, in this case The Traveler (the huge sphere they found on Mars). This alien thing somehow sparked humankind's "Golden Age", in which humans lived longer, and advanced in basically everything. Thousands of years later, "The Darkness", the enemy of The Traveler, arrived. It almost brought the extinction of humankind. But The Traveler sacrificed itself to stop The Darkness and save humankind. With this sacrifice, the Traveler is now a dormant thing floating on earth, basically dying. This is when the Traveler sheds parts of itself to become "The Ghosts" (dinklebot, the floating, talking cubes). These Ghosts' purpose is to search for special individuals among the dead that can wield the power of The Light. They raise them from the dead and become their companion and give them the power of The Light and becomes The Guardians (the players). The Guardian's task is to protect the solar system from the darkness. Darkness being anything and everything that threatens human kind and the solar system, ie. aliens (Taken, Fallen, Hive, Vex, Cabal... each of these aliens have their own back stories) This is basically the start of the Game. - Every other Cinematics you saw just introduces the "Big Baddie" of that game expansion. - First one being Crota, Son of Oryx. A Hive prince that's wrecking havoc on the moon. The speaker of this cinematic is Eris Morn, a guardian who tried to kill Crota (along with 5 other guardians) but failed. Only she survived. Then in the game, you (the player), kills Crota. - The next cinematic is the House of Wolves expansion. The speaker is Mara Sov, the Queen of the Awoken. Awoken are descendants of Humans who chose to run from the Darkness. They made their "Kingdom" on "The Reef", somewhere on the outskirts of the solar system. The story of this expansion is that Mara Sov is inviting Guardians into the reef to hunt down the House of Wolves (A warmonging faction of the Fallen race) - The next cinematics is narrated by Eris Morn once again. This cinematics introduces Oryx, The Taken King. He is a Hive that created the Taken army (an army of corrupted alien species). He is seeking revenge for the death of his son, Crota. The next cinematics is the beginning of the Taken King expansion. The Speaker is Mara Sov, this cinematics shows a space battle against the army of the Oryx. The pilot that was constantly shown, is her brother Uldren Sov. Her army was defeated in this battle. This is where the Taken King expansion game begins.

The Taken King was the high water mark for the Destiny franchise.

At least she appreciated the music, cuz let's be real, the music is top notch

Me (a diehard player since 2016): "Oh sweetie, wait until you find out that we Guardians are now using both Light AND Darkness powers!" But in all seriousness, the Destiny universe is sooooo large, it would take weeks to explain it all. If you're seriously interested in learning about it, there are some great RU-vid channels that go over the lore/history. "My Name Is Byf" is a good one. "Myelin Games" is another.

Destiny genuinely has one of the best lore and worldbuilding in gaminh history... but the in game story has never been it's strong suit. It's gotten significantly better though.

Enjoyed your reactions, even your confusion. Seeing this from the perspective of a non-gamer is informative and fun. But I do love when you find a cinematic you fall in love with though.

The ghost finding his gaurdian was to introduce the new voice actor for the ghost. The person speaking in the taken king intro is the Awoken Queen ( person in the shop casting spell ). You had to plat the game to know her unfortunatly

This would kind of be like reading the first chapter of each book of a series. You may get a synopsis for the setting, but none of the story between.

Destiny has the best cinematic to the franchise as a destiny player this takes me back thank you it was nice viewing it again.

This video gave me chills. It took me back. I remember how excited I was to play this game. You are cool and so lovely.

IMHO I think that one of the reasons for finding these videos confusing or not engaging is in no small part skipping around the narrative/timeline. I think good-intentioned fans want you to react to the most dramatic/poignant moments of a game. But it's like reacting to the suitcase scene of Pulp Fiction without seeing the rest of the movie, you are naturally nonplussed. A lot of these franchises have really good cinematic movies (compilations of cinematics and sometimes bits of key gameplay spliced together) that help understand what's going on, perhaps it might help to react to segments of that than cinematics in popular order. if you have a lot of videos of a specific franchise or game it might be fruitful to search franchise + 'cinematic movie' or franchise + 'cinematic compilation' on this good old RU-vid. That might be a balance of giving them what they need vs what they think they need sorta thing.

This is why we keep recommending the cayde stuff, because it is a full standalone story.

what i really like about your reactions, is that you always give everything a fair chance. you don't see one thing that mildly upsets you and then try to find more reasons to hate on it just for that. if you don't like something that is obviously also fair, and there is no point in pretending that you enjoyed it more than you actually did. i have the feeling you give every new video a fair chance, no matter if you liked the one before or not. and i appreciate that.

catching up on destiny lore/story might feel like trying to explain the entire star wars franchise to someone who had only watched a trailer for the very last film - it's a great game, one of the best long running ones, but holy heck is it a lift for someone new to it. just discovered your channel, will be around for more like this :)

So the part where they were on Mars was our modern day. Destiny and destiny 2 take place in the future after the collapse of civilization

You should totally watch the Dark Souls 1/2/3 Opening Cinematics. The trailers are ok, but the opening cinematics have a lot more story/world building in them.

Holy crap. The nostalgia in this video is insane. I went through these games and dlcs when they were coming out and it feels like yesterday when I was freaking out watching the dark below trailer. D1 was amazing

Ok Hannah! If you really wanta know the whole story, look at “My Name Is Byf”’s “The Complete story of Destiny” it is 3 hours and 57 minutes long but who will be filled in thoroughly!!! As per you questions about who was speaking, the first person you heard speak was know as “The Speaker” a person said to be able to communication with The Traveler - aka the big sphere on mars in the first video” the second person to speak is a “Ghost” (Not as in ghost busters ghost ) but rather a mechanical bot power and mad from “The Light ( apposing the Darkness) Thethird person to speak is known as “Eris Mourn” she is an old “Guardian” known to have great dealings with “The Darkness” and “The Hive” -( which are an Alien species mostly intrested in war and Conquest) the Fourth was “Mara Sov” the queen of the Reef” (the Reef being a “sector” of sorts in space. The fifth person Is “Commander Zavala” you will here more of him as you look into Destiny / Destiny 2 I hope this helps!!!!! Honestly this is one of the BEST Stories in Gaming History! Top Five at least such rich story with tons and tons of Lore which of most you can find on My Name Is Byf’s Channel!!!

You have to understand that this game has been ongoing for like, 7 years at this point. There is a lot of content that has been added, and because of that you need a lot of context for things that come later on. There's a lot of things that happen while you are playing the game, dialogue and cutscenes, that you miss out on when you are doing what you are doing, which is just watching the 'trailers' for major releases. You are missing all the story that actually happens in those releases, which is why they don't tie together. To get the context, you would have to watch a much longer video, which I would recommend doing in different parts, but you would get a lot more out of the Destiny experience by watching something like this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O6N7h1F92Qs.html And if you do choose to watch that, since I know you'll ask... things like the glowing, flaming skull the person has for a head, are just cosmetics you can get in the game. They aren't real or a part of the story. Specifically, I believe it's part of a Halloween event. And most cuts between scenes can pretty much be explained by - "Then you fight a bunch of enemies. And then-" There are also a lot of side stories that are spread out throughout the game. So you may be focused on Oryx one moment, and then it's like, 'Suddenly someone called the 'Lords of Iron' show up'. That happens. Long story short, you 'have no idea what is going on' because, imagine if all you did was watch the first half of every Star Wars movie. Episode 3 you'd be like, alright, so clones are fighting droids in some war. Then episode 4 you would be like, wait, what happened to the droids and all those characters I knew? Then episode 7 you'd be like "Wait, who are all these characters now???" That's basically what you are doing here. There is A LOT of ingame content that you are missing here that is basically required for context. Everything you have watched here, was just the trailers they released for each expansion before they came out. So between the first 'eyes up Guardian' video, and the second 'expansion 1' video, you missed the ENTIRE story of the initial game. And that initial game's story is where characters like this 'Queen' and the 'Guy flying the ship' are introduced in the first place, so naturally, you wouldn't have any idea who they are, without first seeing those introductions.

There's like sooo much story told throughout the game that introduces all the characters and tie in all the expansions. The videos weren't really made for new players to get interested in, mainly just extra lore for current fans. It's not your fault for disliking or getting confused, I can understand with how vague the videos can be. Glad you stuck it through as long as you did!

The lore of this game is so neat, i always feel like i want a movie based on the universe more than I want more gameplay. Edit: If you really want more information about the plot and universe, the channel "MyNameIsByf" does AMAZING in-depth lore coveries that will clear things up Edit 2: Yeah, you kinda hit it on the head- most of these rely on the watcher having played the game. For example, you would know the speaker in the 6 minute cut-scene is the magical woman (the same one from the second expansion video) based on the voice. Also, she is referring to you, the player, as the "hidden friend", due to earlier gameplay events (you helped them out during the events of expansion 2) and also because of the line "When you crawled out of that pit". The line references the player after the events of the first expansion, where you killed Oryx's son, Crota (the creepy bug dude with a sword). His dad is now mad and wants revenge. Basically, the game goes -kill a god (base game) -kill another god (crota) -help out yer awoken buddies (house of wolves) -oh god my actions have consenquences and now im paying the price (taken king) -NANOMACHINES, SON (rise of iron) And then the second game goes as such: -big mean man comes and steals your power, you gotta punish him (base game) -another big mean man is here but he just kinda wants to watch you die for his amusement (base game raid 1, raids being a 6 person group activity. Most expansions add a raid.) -time shenanigans (expansion 1, curse of osiris) -russian war machine with ballet music (expansion 2, warmind) and your kinda caught up from there if i remember.

its so warming to see a person to watch the trailers and cutscene's i grew up with and love but its so irritating to see her say some of the stuff but i get it she doesnt understand THIS IS NOT A HATE COMMENT!!

I really wish I could have a conversation explaining everything because truly the story is incredible. It's presented slightly confusing. But each cinematic is fantastic once you know how it's connected. Hope you do the rest of the cinematics for destiny and destiny 2. I'm one of those destiny super fans that has followed everything about the game since its conception

For some context, Mara Sov is the queen of the awoken, which is a race that used to be human. They were on colony ships to other planets when the collapse happened and they were affected by the darkness. When she says she remembers everything about the day she was born, she means the day she was reborn as awoken.

Don't worry that "chill" its the music. Destiny's sound tracks are so good you can feel them!

How about a look at DOOM and DOOM ETERNAL. Specifically the story and music. Mostly the music.

Because I'm new to your channel I had to watch your previous Destiny 2 video and might I say, I have no clue what technical aspects were involved, but the quality of your videos have improved. The more you make videos the better you get at making videos.

I don't know if the true date Destiny takes place is known, but the opening cutscene on Mars says present day, but when the Speaker (narrator) is talking, he mentions that everything went bad centuries after the Traveler arrived. So at LEAST year 2500, but probably 3+.

Not sure if anyone said this already but the opening cinematics don’t explain the story. They just introduce so you’d definitely end confused if you only watch those. You gotta watch the videos with the cutscenes. They’re long but you get much more from them.

As a hardcore Destiny player, the need to go into an in-depth Byf explanation is strong lol 🤣🤣🤣

Destiny 1 was an experience we played through over 3 years, 99% of the story and plot is told in gameplay instead of the cutscenes, that’s why it’s hard to follow with just cinematic’s and stuff. But as a MASSIVE Destiny fan I love watch you react to this

Little backstory on the fallen, or eliksni as their also known lived in the grace of the traveler, (which they called the great machine.) until their planet was erased in a destructive whirlwind, during which the traveler left them high and dry, and they took a hard fall, as in some of equipment they use in game were children’s toys at the height of their civilization, and have been chasing the traveler ever since.

As a destiny 2 player I haven't seen some of these trailers cuz I've played little of destiny 1 but it's still interesting to see them go to the other trailers especially ones that you have seen

It makes a LOT more sense when you play the game. Taken King was some of the best cinematic stuff in Destiny.

i think the best way you can piece it all together is to watch a vidoe on the main story line of destiny 1 and 2 then watch the expansion pack cinematics which will makes sense after that. because these cinematics set up the story and then in game you play and beat the bosses and set up the next cinematic story so by not playing youre missing a huge chunk of untold story

Destiny has an amazing story. The taken king and all the lore that goes with that is great. I think it is hard for someone who’s never played the games to grasp it all from just cinematics

Grimoire cards are like, lore pieces. They link them to your account so they can put them on their website instead of cramming it into the game and having to scroll through loads of lore.

I enjoy this because it made me feel so new again.

think of each expansions is a short sequel to the main book with the same protagonist venturing further in his/her journey battling any threats in the solar system.

These characters are introduced mid campaign, the white hair blue lady is Mara sov, qween of the awoken ( the snowing one too) and the black haired one was her brother uldren sov, the hidden friend is Erris morn from the dark below. And the intro with the new ghost voice was just a restatement for our being found

it was present-day on mars. the gameplay you see is in the future where the ghost brought you back to life.

Also crash course: Destiny takes place almost eight hundred years from now. The first expansion is about slaying a Hive (space zombie bug) god named Crota. The second is about a Fallen (Multiarmed space pirate) clan leader or Kell named Skolas who had his people betray the Awoken Queen. Taken King is Oryx’sCrota’s dad, revenge against us for killing his son. Also Awoken are people stretched and pulled between light and dark basically immortal space elves. Hope this helps a tad.

The thing with the stories in destiny, you won't get much of the story with these cinematics. these ones are only to introduce us into what the start of the story is going to look like. the story part is mainly through the gameplay. there are other cinematics that happen throughout the missions also that you skipped over which did leave you to be confused

i know this is a month late but it’s really absolutely fine if you’re confused. Im a destiny player and I see where you’re coming from watching these cinematics. The expansions aren’t all connected, i think its just The Dark Below and The Taken King that are connected but the rest are just their own thing dealing with a specific enemy threat.

The nostalgia I got from these cinematics.. gave me chills

These were expansion teasers for existing players. Its not geared to introduce new players to the story but to further entrance existing players. All story and lore was previously given during missions so not really any story cinematics to help a new person who is not currently playing the game itself. Without playing the game you are left without a lot of Context. For a player like myself hearing the intro to "The Dark Below" sent chills down my spine and fond memories of the raid within that expansion and the hunt to be the first players to beat it and discover what new loot awaited victorious gamers. Then "The Taken King" represented an escalation and consequence for our actions and introduced a new threat and enemy type to the game.

The first cutscene you watched was Destiny as well. But they used it again for the free version of Destiny 2 called New Light.

Quite often I like to try and understand the entire contents of a library by reading the street sign in front of it...

If you still find yourself asking if anything you saw has anything to do with the 1st Cinematic, just have in mind that every DLC / Expansion had its own Story, and was focused on itself. 1st Cinematic was just the Base-game Story. Rest were DLCs.

The ghost finding the gaurdian, from my ubderstanding, was meant to be more sentimental than anything. Its also a both problem bc while some of these are intro cutscenes there are a few cutscenes that happen in the middle of the game in between missions

You're seeing intro videos for each chapter of the story with nothing to bookend each chapter. The Grimoire entries you see being unlocked offer more background story but it's a lot to have to dig in to outside the cinematics. Even for people who actually played the game.

I’m a destiny and destiny 2 og RU-vidr and this makes so much sense to me but I understand as someone who hasn’t seen all the other cutscenes it would be hard to connect everything

Just so you know it has been about 3 or 4 thousand years from when the traveler came till you came into the light

I don't think a lot of people noticed this but... In the opening scene on Mars, when the 3 astronauts discover the Traveler, it's raining. Mars doesn't have rain storms. At least I don't think. But beside the facts, the Traveler was in it's process of giving Mars life.

Destiny is something you have to experience in the game to understand whats happening, i would suggest watching people play the game in each expansion to truly understand
