One of my favorite games of all time. Few games have ever made me cry, and this was one of them, and it wasn't even a sad moment that did me in. After coming down a snowcapped mountain I had just a few hills to go to get to where I was going, and after reaching the top of the last hill I saw my destination at the bottom when it hit me...after 13 hours of playing I finally understood what the game was trying to tell me, and without any further provocation the tears started streaming. They were some of the happiest tears I've ever had. Once I collected myself, I made my way to that city on the bottom of the hill and finished my deliveries.

Hideo Kojima games are very confusing but it’s because he likes writing them like a book. There’s lots of deep messages, metaphors and relationships to keep track of but if you can handle it, his works are some of the best games on the market for storytelling. It also helps that he’s a completely insane too, especially as it helps him to come up with very wild universes and settings that can be incredible to witness, not just for how surreal they can be but how they’re strangely well fleshed out.
@octo6829
@octo6829 3 года назад
Ah yes there's always the "I praise Kojima so goddamn much" cringy comment. Dude, one thing is when something truly has deep meaning because it comes from a very unique and real place. Whole another thing when it is overdone and shoved in everyone's face, like your comment. Death stranding TRIES SO HARD to have a "dEeP mEaNiNg" and it's always so cringy my god when someone tries to make it even more deeply meaningful that just makes it worse. I enjoyed the game to some extent, but it's not the best thing ever, it's far from it and unnecessarily long for no reason. Kojima is not who he used to be. Oh and BTW yes Kojima is director and writer of most of all the games he is involved, but none of those games would ever exist if it weren't for the people behind him, Kojima is the whole team, not just the guy, writing is not just from him but from other awesome and genius writers in his team.

@flarefox3118
@flarefox3118 3 года назад
@@octo6829 The term, “deeper meaning,” or, “deep meaning,” refers to the meaning underneath the surface outlook, it has nothing to do with something that’s unique in nature or set in reality. Not to mention it’s a cliche of writing and a basic function of writing, not a descriptive piece which is clearly what you view the term, “deep,” in a writing sense as. I’d also like to say that I’d say it’s far more cringy to attack someone over something that you’re not familiar with, especially as it tends to make you look a little dense or more bluntly stupid. I’m actually somewhat curious though, I didn’t just praise his works, I actually provided some negatives with, “it’s confusing,” yet you seem to believe I’m effectively saying, “he can do no wrong,” so keeping that in mind, where exactly did you get that from? Also I’d like to add a little more to it, Kojima himself effectively controls the writing much like any other boss as they say what goes and what doesn’t, if you’re annoyed with the way I stated that then I’d say that’s about the only thing you have to be angry about. Anyway, I’m not one for insults and calling people cringy so I’ll leave that little bit of immaturity to you.

Basically: In post-apocalyptic world there are separated human settlements. You (played by actor Norman Reedus - you may know him from many productions, i.e. "The Walking Dead") are delivery guy who helps connecting forementioned settlements with cables and delivers basic goods (yes, we are fusion of Amazon delivery guy and cable tv fitter). Monsters, bad guys, weird stuff etc. happens when we leave our safe space of settlement and try to make our way. All of this is very hard to explain unless you've already played some part of the game. For example: those weird babies in tanks are helping us with detection of BT ("beached things" - monstrosities you've seen in this trailer), but whole thing is wrapped with game plot - which is revealed later, of course. Whole thing is really confusing, although statement that someone completed the game and still doesn't know what it is about might be a little bit of exaggeration (but just a little bit) It's obviously a game (scenes when you see player's character traveling are parts of gameplay), but it's extremely stuffed with cinematics that are... well, cinematic. And yes, I recall at least two other cinematic trailers - one with Reedus, one with Mads Mikkelsen and Guillermo del Toro

That's Norman Reedus of The Walking Dead fame, was one of the brothers in The Boondock Saints. 5:27 - "Is this a movie or a game?!" Yes. Hideo Kojima left Konami, leaving the game that had been hinted at by the Playable Teaser (PT/Silent Hills PT). He apparently had a lot of story left to tell, and had to find catharsis for the pain of his betrayal, and who better than Guillermo del Toro to help tell it? Love the video as always!

"Is this a movie or a game?" Funny thing is, before getting into video game production, Hideo Kojima did try getting into the film industry, but he didn't have the money or family/friend support structure for it. As the game development tech improved allowing for more cinematic games, he started coming out with things like the cinematic Metal Gear Solid games and the heavily anime-inspired Zone of Enders series until Konami cut ties with him in 2015 in a remarkably abusive way, even barring him from attending the Video Game Awards to accept his awards for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Death Stranding was his first cinematic game after he created his own game studio.

I started this game hating almost everything about it, and I finished it absolutely in love with it. This is a very complex game that takes you on a journey not only to understand the story but also to understand the characters and their motivations, from Sams avoidance of touching other people to the insanity of Higgs. I'm so glad that you've finally got to this trailer. I wrote a plot description a few minutes ago, but the app closed on me for some reason, so that 10 minutes was wasted. Like someone else suggested, there is a great Girlfriend's Review that talks about the games themes, without spoiling the plot, and it's my favorite review of the game. Death Stranding was my 2019 game of the year. Plot synopsis: In the future humans discover that we all have metaphorical beaches, a limbo of some sort, that connect us to the land of the dead. But one day the dead start using those beaches to come back over to the land of the living. The incident is called the Death Stranding. When the antimatter of the dead touches the matter of living beings, huge explosions occur. Thus driving the remaining people to live underground in city sized bunkers, or smaller ones. The only way to transport stuff now is human carriers, which the protagonist Sam is. Sam is also the son of the president. The dying president tasks Sam with a mission, to travel across the country and connect these bunkers via a network that uses the chiralium the dead leave in the atmosphere. The network allows for instant transport of non organic material. Connecting all the bunkers, thus connecting America again. So you spend the game being a courier of sorts, going across the country, gaining the trust of people, so you can put them on the network. There are more story and plot beats, but that's the starting point. Also you were right about the babies in the glass containers. They are premature and the containers simulate a mother's womb. Being premature, the babies sort of have a connection to the lands of the living and dead, so the harness the container is attached to uses that connection to let couriers know that the dead is nearby, even b4 there is visual confirmation. And because the dead go in and out of sight.

Death Stranding is a completely new type of action game, where the goal of the player is to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society. ... As Sam Porter Bridges, you will attempt to bridge the divides in society, and in doing create new bonds or “Strands” with other players around the globe. And your character Sam carries a small baby in an orange bottle strapped to his chest. It stays with him at all times. The child, called a BB, is essentially a tool: it alerts Sam to ghostly apparitions called BTs, which dot the post-apocalyptic landscape he must traverse.

I’ve never played it, but I can tell what was explained to me: the game is by Japanese developer Hideo Kojima, most known for the Metal Gear Solid franchise. One day, death broke and ghosts showed up and exploded, setting off a chain reaction of making more ghosts who also exploded, now there’s a mass extinctions on Earth. You are the son of the President, the dying lady in the White House, and your mission is travelling across America delivering things. You can’t sense the ghosts, but baby can, so you gotta travel with them. Kojima is famous for absurd names, some of the Characters are named Die-Hardman, Fragile, Feels-Badman. Being inscrutable is definitely part of the brand.

"I've got nothing" Don't worry, even people who finished the game say that. The trailers were phenomenally unhelpful in regards to what the game was about, and playing it wasn't as revealing as the players had hoped. It just doesn't make sense. And it seemingly isn't supposed to.
@rigierish3807

It does make sense, it’s just that, if you were used to Kojima games and already played the previous ones, you’d know there are a lot of metaphors in his games. There are also a lot of hidden details and if you don’t pay enough attention, you wouldn’t understand some stuff going on in the main story. For example, MGS2 is a criticism of America, our era of information, global politics and a lot of other things but almost nobody understood that when the game was released. And it’s like that for the majority of his games.
@tonyharrison2112
@tonyharrison2112 3 года назад
it absolutely makes sense. The whole game is a metaphor for loneliness in the age of technology wrapped up in religious motifs about death or our mortality and how we as a species are doomed no matter what we try and do so why not just rip the band-aid off fast and get it over with? It does a great job of showing the themes of helplessness that's rife during the 21st century, how technology can hinder our human connections with one another but also help in some ways. The other aspect of human consumption, overproduction, and pollution being almost certainly a self-paved path to destruction is also heavily implied throughout the entire game. If you've got the attention span of a pet goldfish then sure the game is weird crazy black oil creatures and baby's in pods that doesn't make sense. But if you give it even 5 minutes of attention it's pretty clear what the entire point of the game was and what mindset Kojima had when creating it.

Death Stranding is kind of game that *"you need to sit back and relax"*, because of the majority of the gameplay is by walking delivering some cargo and watching the plot. The scenery isn't bad too, reminds me of Iceland.

The easiest way to explain the plot of the game... A huge disaster linked the land of the dead with the land of the living. So the land of the dead is leaking into our world, and this contaminates the area and makes it impossible to live in. Corrupted souls inhabit those areas and attack the living. When people die they must be cremated quickly or a huge explosion and influx of the land of the dead will happen, and it can wipe out entire settlements. Can't remember why this is said to happen, but I believe it was something to do with the soul leaving the body and causing a bad reaction somehow. It also occasionally rains time in contaminated areas, the rain ages everything it touches. The main character delivers supplies between settlements, and is recruited to help link together an advanced wireless computer network between settlements across the country. He has a keen sense of the invisible ghosts that roam the areas, so he has an advantage over most people when traveling. Fun fact, the experiments into the advanced instant wireless transmission tech that makes the network function, was the cause of the disaster in the first place. The baby in the container is a BB... It is half dead and half alive, so it has a connection with the land of the dead and can sense the ghosts strongly. They are connected to sensors that help people navigate the dangerous areas. The BBs come into being by being extracted from women who die while pregnant. This is a very simplified overview of the plot and story. The guy who created this game puts in a lot of story in the games he makes, and you can get several hours of cutscenes when playing through his games.

You have pretty much the same reaction to this as everyone else 😂. Hideo Kojima makes great games with great story telling, but it's so confusing until the end. I'd recommend watching a play through/cut scene watch along. It'll take a while to get through, maybe in several sittings, but thoroughly worth it. Is it a film? Yes, but with gameplay 🙂.

The director of Death Stranding, Hideo Kojima, is a pioneer in this industry. Kojima persued a career in film, but things didn't work out, wich was a blessing in disguise, because he realized, that an interactive medium, like video games, can tell more nuanced stories. He is the creator of the "stealth action" genre, in the video game industry, and he is one of the first, if not, the first, to implement mature, Hollywood style narratives to a video game, back in the early 90's. Thereby, destroying the argument that "video games are just for kids". His game series, Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid, are basically sci-fi/stealth/acion games, that narratively play out like a military espionage thriller, with an anti-war theme to them. Since his fans are borderline zealots, who try to decypher every interview, and dissect every trailer he puts out, Kojima likes to have this back-and-forth with his fans, by intentionally making his trailers and Twitter posts very cryptic. Kojima knows how to hype his games up, like no one in this industry. He once created a fake game studio, went on stage, at a games conference, while disguised, just to present a trailer for a "new" IP. Everyone thought that this unknown new game studio, came out of nowhere with the best, and most mysterious trailer at that conference. Later, internet detectives pieced the clues together, and figured out that it was Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid 5, wich would be his last entry to the saga, before he began production on Death Stranding. Although, sometimes a bit convoluted, Kojima still puts thrilling, and thought provoking entertainment out there. One of his games, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, even predicted the future, in terms of how artificial intelligence is being used to filter out all the infornation on the internet, to create a specific narrative. That is basically what is happening today with big tech and social media, except, Kojima predicted it back in 2001. So, i just realized i wrote a whole novel about things that really have nothing to do with the game you just reacted to. My bad lol. I haven't played Death Stranding, yet, so, i don't have any meaningful insight, other than, that this game seems to lean heavy into the sci-fi, with elements of horror. I have no idea what is going on in any of the trailers, but Kojima still has a way of keeping people intrigued imo. You should give the other trailers a try, if you are ever low on content to react to. If you're interested, here's a link to a compilation video of all the main cinematic trailers (minus the one you just uploaded). bit.ly/3dirYmn

Hey Hannah, in case you for whatever reason decide that you want to play this game, I highly advise that you begin by not touching this game at all. For starters, first familiarize yourself with all of the other games that have come out these last few decades before touching this one, as you'll quickly realize that this game is like no other. Second off, you can do this while doing the first piece of advice, which is to play the Metal Gear Solid series. The reason why I advise this is because this is the series that Hideo Kojima created and worked on for decades before Death Stranding. Playing those games will let you get a comprehensible glimpse into that man's insane brain, but you also get to experience a legendary game series that has unfortunately been inactive because he got fired from being able to continue his own series. And third, dont worry about being confused from either the games trailer or while playing the game and trying to understand its story. Every trailer that Hideo Kojima had ever made for his games have all had out of context trailers that give zero insight into what the story and setting is truly about. And second off, even if you get confused about the story while playing the game, the game will always eventually give you an explanation of context to help clue you in and give your answers. I'm saying all of this because i finally got into this game, years after it came out with everyone being confused about it, criticizing it for being too boring or "just a walking simulator", just so I can finally see what this game is truly about, and I can see that a lot of people were either wrong, misinformed or the game was just never meant for them. I, without a doubt, can say that I love this game so much, and I say this because I dont want to see more people harshly criticize something that is actually really good once you open up and actually give it a chance.

Have you ever thought about doing game cutscene watch throughs? You do trailers but maybe you could do cutscene reactions, of course that'll probably be less often because of how long they can be but it would honestly be a pretty cool idea, make a list of trailers you found really intriguing and then sort through them and find which one to react to. Maybe even make a poll for which one as well. I would love to see that

So basicaly the world of the dead merged with the world of the living and ghosts apeared everywhere. When one of those ghosts interacts with a person a explosion heppens. It caused the apocalypse. The remains of humanity had to hide in underground bunkers to avoid the ghosts. Those babys in the jars are used to sense the ghosts, they're mother became brain dead while pregnant so they are between the two worlds. The protagonist is a delivery man who delivers stuff from one bunker to another, he also happens to be the son of the president of whats left of America, and hes also immortal.

Yes, the trailer brings more question than answers. It's a cinematic game, a playable movie. The story is complex, but when you finish the game, everything makes sense (i got most of things, but it's common to not understand everything when it comes to a Kojima game, some things I had to read in a Death Stranding wiki). I cried at the ending, it's a beautiful game and has a great soundtrack. The trailer song, BB's Theme, made sense with the game story. Recommended!

"It's got fifty endings". No. It only present a single ending. But what you take from that ending varies from player to player, and that's what makes it so great to me. I've seen the 40-120 hour game in full 27 times now, and still counting, still picking up clues, and yes - I really am that weird :D. One player I expect to finish this week is still confused as hell, but based on the questions and guessing along the road I expect will end up with "everything makes sense in the end". It's a masterpiece like no other. Most players that "get it" have a very fulfilling ending that "explains everything" and maybe "confirms something". Except the question that the game don't even ask but still provide you with tons of clues about in every cutscene. So my hope is that the DLC/DS2 will provide answers to the questions most players never asked and no players would have the answer to in a single playthrough. One player called it "game of the century, experience of a lifetime", but still didn't get the half of it (which is impossible without digging further). It's also a game I recommend to those who I think can enjoy the slow paced gameplay loop, and that plays alone with no stream chat that steals the focus. Complete attention to the very lengthy and numerous cutscenes throughout the story is an absolute requirement, or you'll either not get the story at all, or have everything be massive reveals with no confirmations in the guesswork you're supposed to do in a mystery (with strategy, tactics, and stealth elements) game. Again, with the biggest mystery of all not even being presented to the player in an obvious way. Metaphoric, slow paced, heavy use of references, obfuscatious (?) in style (even cinematography is very deliberate here), I get why this isn't for everyone. Chess isn't for everyone. Ask a chess player if chess is a bad game. If you think the trailer is confusing, wait till ya get a load of the first two or three hours of it :D A usual comment is "Am I on drugs or something?" :D Trying to understand any of it from the get go is pointless. Note that Kojima sets up the player for the last 5 hours or so with long treks in horrible weather, crazy reveals, and several massive fights. By the time the 2-4 last cutscenes hit (about 1.5 hours long), the player is a mentally exhausted wreck which can manifest itself through emotions. Keep that in mind when watching this mashup of the two last cutscene reveals - putting all the sequences in the right order makes a huge difference instead of the snippets you're given as "BB memory flashbacks" throughout the game - SPOILER alert, obviously: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ooolWYnbmH0.html Note how different players react differently to various parts, how it "clicks" at different locations. Also note how none of them connects with the meaning of the doll, even if it was literally explained in the game a couple of hours previously, and none of them connects the dots of how the first cutscene ends and the second starts. Of my 27, only one even took notice on how the second starts, but not trying to explain why (which would be impossible).

Every job well done was something accomplished. Every connection to those I couldn't see, helping me build and move further on, led me to want to help those that couldn't see me. And the landscape is wonderful, and harsh. It's a complex game. It sucked me in.
