To be fair, if someone stole my magic milk cow, they best be ready for war. In other news, I'd love to see you react to anyone attempting to explain the timeline for the Drakkengard/NieR games. Its a trip. Especially since NieR's lore isn't limited to its games. But at least 2 stageplays, one concert and an MMO tie in.

Hearing you talk about your surprise/admiration for the depth of development games go through to be what they are really warms my heart. Funnily enough, the reason I went to college to study video game design to work as a game developer was because of this series. In the first game you can unlock special feature stuff ( similar to movies) and it was viewing the concept art for characters and environments in the game that inspired me. Back when I was a kid I found many non gamers didn't appreciate it like I did, and today as I still work towards my dream career it only changed a bit, so I'm happy you get what many (even some gamers) take for granted!
@PotatoPatatoVonSpudsworth
@PotatoPatatoVonSpudsworth 3 года назад
I'm studying video game dialogue and narrative, and I couldn't agree with this sentiment more! Good writing is so often undervalued by the industry, making games like GOW all the more impressive for actually putting in the effort. It's a shame for every one game that gets it right, there's usually two that end up like the FF7 "remake." It's demotivating that so many people don't seem to realize how important such subtleties are, but my hope is that perhaps folks like us can remind them what they're missing.

One thing I've always appreciated about the series is that it's not just a revenge story, it's a self-destructive revenge story... and the player realizes before Kratos the cost of his veangeance. That's what makes GoW 2018 so satisfying, it's about a broken man trying to piece himself back together for the sake of his son

Also in the recent God of War (the one where he wraps the scars of the chains he wore) there is a lot of Norse mythology told by Mimir and it’s pretty spot on for the most part. The mythology experienced in playing the game is adjusted to fit the game’s narrative but the stories Mimir tells as you travel are pretty great.

A God named Kratos exist in the Greek Mythology, his characterization is quite similar to the game Kratos but the backstory is totally different. It was a coincidence that the game character is also named Kratos. It is the Greek word for Strength and they choose the name after written the character. Figure that it would be fitting.
@Zombiewithabowtie
@Zombiewithabowtie 3 года назад
*Spoilers for Dad of Boy* However, the giants of Jotunheim named him more appropriately. Just as Atreus had an alternate name amongst Laufey's people, Kratos was known to them as Farbauti, the name of Loki's father in original Norse mythos, and which translates to "Dangerous Hitter."

It wasn't likely a coincidence. His brother is named Diamos and he gets Icarus's wings, also son of Zeus.
@caffeinedelusions
@caffeinedelusions 3 дня назад
@@Zombiewithabowtie There's also something of a theory that, in the aftermath of Ragnarok, he might end up with the name 'Odr' (Freya's husband, a once-mortal man who was raised to godhood and is known to wander in solitude until Freya goes to bring him home). Some versions of the myth consider Odr an aspect of Odin (usually the same ones that conflate Freya and Frigg), but the literal translation of the name is 'Fury' or 'inspiring rage'. Freya had a pair of daughters by him in the mythology. How well do you think Atreus would handle a pair of half-sisters?

the story goes like this: Ares, the god of war, tricked Kratos into killing his family for the power to defeat all enemies in battle. their ashes has now seeped into his skin, turning white, thus his alias "The Ghost of Sparta". he killed Ares for this, and became a God of War (as the title goes). he can't forgive himself from all he done, so he tried to commit suicide, just to be with his family, but the gods wont let him because he is part of the gods, so at that point, he sets himself to kill all gods. fast forward to the final event, he finally killed Zeus, his father, with the help of Pandora. and now all the gods are dead, he can finally kill himself to reunite to his family. mysteriously, someone healed him. as Kratos seeing the entire Greece in ruins, he decides to leave the place and live another good life on another place. and that leads to the story of God of War PS4

also, his tattoos has a significant meaning. from his childhood, he had a brother, named Deimos. known from his glowing scar on his face and body he somehow had the potential to get stronger. one day, Thanatos, the god of death, kidnapped Deimos and imprisoned him in the Domain of Death for unknown reason. as Kratos became a Spartan general, he has a tattoo, same as his scar, to remember his brother that needed help.

19:00 I had a Fantasy writing class in college once and my final was a conversation in an empty bar between two brothers, and the brothers happened to be Lycaon, a minor Roman god of wolves, and Coyotl, a Native American coyote trickster god -- and it was all about how their relationship fell apart as faith in the old gods faded away, and how Coyotl was content to stay hidden among humanity and have fun while Lycaon couldn't let go of his old power and privilege, so he's resolved to be the "Big Bad Wolf" and feed on people's fear.

I know it would probably too much for a video but there's an amazing documentary about the making of God of War (2018)(The one with Kratos and the boy). It's called Raising Kratos and goes into many aspects about game developing, personal stakes, pressure, casting, deadlines, expectations and the struggles of making a game of that size, and you get to know a lot about the poeple behind it. It is truly great.

When I was a kid, way back in the 70s. my parents never understood gaming and they dismissed it out of hand as a "waste of time". they never stopped my from gaming and once I got a computer (at about 11) my mother saw that everything I played required reading. I would read the manual from cover to cover (most were short, but some were really long) and even some of the games I played were pure Text adventures, like Zork and my mother didn't care why I was reading... just that I was reading. She was a great supporter of my gaming, even though she did not understand what it was.

That cliffhanger of Kratos surviving his sacrifice was in 2008. It would take nearly a decade for fans to finally see what comes next for the ghost of sparta so you can imagine the excitement when the new god of war was revealed. One of the most legendary moments in gaming.

One obscure fantasy creature is from American myth is the Tailypo. A hunter wounded a strange animal, severing it's tail which he brought home and ate. Then the creature comes back looking for it's tail. The hunter is terrorized through the night as he hears it asking where it's tail is from outside his house until it gets in.

Hello Hannah, enjoyed the vid and loved the energy amd enjoyed your journey of piecing information together and seeing your surprise. Just wanted to follow up on your question for comment: Since you like Celtic lore maybe you've heard of Scathatch? She would be a lesser known character of mythology I really enjoyed reading about. My favorite book series by Michael Scott, The secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel: the author does a similar thing as in God of War, or how you talked about in your books. Using real characters or mythological ones sometimes too, but as if they were alive today. I love this trope so I might just buy your books :) Also off topic, but gosh you are an extremely gorgeous lady

Hannah, great reaction to those videos. Also, the same channel from mythology and fiction has most of mythology from celts to Norse as a playlist. There is a playlist with one of the most bizarre and f**k up stories from Slavic mythology that might inspire your books- cause mythology is more than just family drama (Koschei The Immortal Sorcerer). A couple of characters called Leshy and also Chernobog/Czernobog inspired me to write a creepy character that lives in the forest for a Fantasy book and my dnd/The Witcher Roleplaying game campaign. I think Resident Evil 8: Village has some inspiration as well. Of course The Witcher books and games.

Talking about involving lesser known mythologies in fantasy, one of my favorite RU-vid series is an animation called "No Evil" that does that really well. I don't think it really fits in with the stuff you react to, but it uses a lot of Mayan and Native American folklore, and all the magic involves music in a really unique way. It starts off slow, but the plot gets really interesting and the artist is amazing with fitting all the different beliefs and stories together.

She decided to fight him 1 v 1 anyway to slow him down giving the girls in town enough time to flee. Egyptian: Nephthys - Crow Godess of death

Lesser known Greek Mythology monsters. The myrmidons. Some sort of monstrous teeth were planted in the ground and ant-like warriors grew from them. They were a great military cohort because they all worked together in unity (the kind of discipline and training that a Phalanx needs in order to be effective).

I think the best way you can describe video games, is that they are interactive movies. Or at least (imo) the best ones are. They tell engaging stories with engaging characters that they connect to you. And the one thing that I think people don't actively acknowledge is sound design. Take the "Old Soldier" cinematics for warcraft that you've already watched. Varok Saurfang has a theme song that is played all through those videos that just ache with sadness and loss. And the best part is, they take the same collection of notes, but in lower, or higher key to subtly connect back to the original.

Your thoughts at 5:44 just summarized the war every child / adult has to fight constantly with the non-gaming parent / uncle / aunt / gf / wife / neighbor / their dog / frogs / aliens etc. Legend has it that game industry artists and musicians also fought this war when their craft was once dubbed "not art".

Every time people ask about myths i tell the myth of the Tupi-guarani curupira and caipora. Curupira is a kid with inverted feet and red hair that tricked colonial hunters into getting lost, by making them follow his footprints trying to get back home. Caipora is similar but is seen more as a protector of the forest. She rides a boar. It is disputed if caipora is male or female, or even if they are the same entity or cousins lol

Nice video, it makes me wish you react to more videos like the Kratos one. Watching trailers is nice and all but sometimes I wish you could delve deeper into the stories without having to play the game and this was perfect. As an author, I'm sure you'll like the more story-oriented games, not to hate on the ones that are more multiplayer and service oriented cause I know they can have cool lore, but really if you like mythology and great character development games like God of War and Hellblade is where is at imo, you should check more content like this.

One of the more interesting figures we learned about in World Literature in College was Gilgamesh. He was literally the first hero whose story was written down on stone tablets in like 4000 BCE (AD). He ruled the ancient kingdom of Uruk and was said to be 2/3 divine and was meant to be a servant of the gods will upon the human race, but he was a bit of a VERY arrogant man who basically just gave the gods the finger and did as he pleased. He really wasn't much of a hero by today's standards, but he did keep his kingdom safe, so I guess that makes him a hero by that times standards. The gods were so pissed that Gilgamesh wouldn't obey them that they created Enkidu who they formed from clay, but Enkidu couldn't understand human emotions and things like that so the gods sent the 'divine harlot' to sleep with him. Afterwards Enkidu went to Uruk to subdue Gilgamesh and force him to obey the gods but when Enkidu challenged Gilgamesh to a contest of strength they found they were both equals and actually became friends. Shortly after Gilgamesh and Enkidu go on a few adventures until the goddess Ishtar came to desire Gilgamesh for herself. She went to Gilgamesh and offered her hand in marriage, but Gilgamesh said no because he had heard tales that she was very promiscuous. This pissed her off so she went to her dad and demanded that the gods release the Bull of Heaven, a creature so powerful even the gods feared it, to punish Gilgamesh. So the gods released the Bull, but Gilgamesh and Enkidu slew it and at this point the gods had had enough with Enkidu so they took back the life they gave him, this was possible since he was made of clay. Gilgamesh was devastated and began to worry over his own mortality so he traveled all across the world seeking immortality. He traveled to the underworld where he learned of a flower that would make him immortal but the flower was really rare and difficult to reach. Finally he found the flower and was bringing back home before he decided to stop and bathe. He placed the flower down on the shore and went to bathe but while he was bathing a snake smelled the flower and ate it. The snake shed it's skin and became young again, which people believed then to be why snakes shed their skin. Gilgamesh found the snakes skin where he left the flower and just laughed at all the effort he went through to become immortal only for it to be taken away at the last minute. That story always stuck with me, I think it's just because of how cool it is that the story of Gilgamesh is literally the first written record of a hero in human history. Just kind of a neat glimpse into the far past. There's also an anime series called Fate Stay Night (and several spin-offs) that depict Gilgamesh. It's a sorta of Pokemon-esque anime but instead of cute monster creatures the people summon ancient mythological heroes to battle it out in a free for all battle royale for the Holy Grail which grants one wish to the winner.

For a bit of extra knowledge: in the playstation 4 god of war, kratos has taken on a calm lifestyle in norse mythology. After his new wife, Freya died, with her last wish to have her ashes spread over the tallest peak in all the realms, Kratos and his new son Atreus, who doesn't know that he is a god, set out for the mountain. Kratos strongly regrets his past and tries to hide every bit of it from his son to protect him. This doesn't work eventually and Atreus finds out. Kratos thought that his son would hate him for what he has done, but Atreus seemed okay with it. At the end of the story for the game we see that kratos has as he says, "nothing more to hide" as he finally takes off the leather bands that were covering his burn marks from the chains.

This still leaves out three other games in the series before the 2018 game. Kratos is such a unique character that people forget about because all they see is the blood, guts, and vengeance without the tragedy and the human weakness that drive his motivations.
